Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our selected local community is the former industrial zone along the railway in Taipei City.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our project is about the industrial heritages along the main railway line in Taipei City, especially factories founded when Taiwan was under Japanese rule. These historical landmarks can be a good sample to introduce the history of being a colony and how Taipei become a modernized and industrialized city. On the other hand, most of these places have been transformed into 'creative park' in recent years, becoming a popular tourist attraction.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

When we were out for interviews on industrial heritage or small meetings, we depended on unlimited mobile connection to access to the Internet or free wifi services provided by the Cultural and Creative Park. At school, we used wire, and wireless Internet services. Each of us had different ways to connect to the Internet at home. For example, the web constructor used HiNet services of Chunghwa Telecom with download speed up to 50MB and upload speed up to 20MB.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Due to the huge research scope, we spent all holidays on field studies and interviews, and we were very actively to do good time management. The reservation for the guide tour at Jianguo Brewery gave us some difficulties because on weekdays, ten is the minimum number for the guide tour and our classmates need to attend classes on weekdays. It was difficult for us to get together ten people. We continuously negotiated with the Brewery and showed them our sincerity. Finally, an expert gave us the informative guide tour to the Brewery for better understanding and problem solving.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

What our participation in International Schools CyberFair is not only to let the public understand the values of these industrial heritage but also call for active action to care for people, things, and events surrounding us.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

For the Gifted Class of Humanity and Social Science Group of our school, there is a course entitled 'Research Method of Social Science' that teaches the 1st graders some research methods they might not easily be exposed to. The Cyber Fair does give us the opportunity to review and make use of our learning results. We now had the experience and knew better about our thesis writing in the 2nd Grade.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We set up our club page on Facebook with the reminders of schedule planning and important itineraries. At the same time, we had a private workshop website that allows us to organize and sort literature and photos. We also made use of Feedback function for discussion. Because we had huge data, we used cloud drive for data access.

From National Central Library, we collected various literatures. The databanks helped us to find useful information in many books.

When conducting on-site visits to the factories, we used camera to record the authentic records of factories. During interviews, we used the built-in voice recording function of cell phone of our member. During the guide tour, we videotaped the whole process.

When constructing the website, we used Notepad++ for editing and FileZilla for uploading web contents; for images, we used WindowsLive Image Center and IrfanView. Additionally, we used AdobeIllustrator for map drawing. Some parts were drew by hand first before scanning to the computer.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

First of all, what satisfied us the most is although we were overloaded, yet we persisted to complete the work and present the results to everyone. Some members even believe that is the distinct difference between senior high school and junior high school. Joining the Cyber Fair, we had a new breakthrough. We have more confidence in ourselves and we have improved research skills greatly.

We now care more about the local history and culture and we have better abilities to think critically about the pros and cons of each preservation method. We were able to speak out at group meetings as well as those with local residents and the public sector and we did not passively receive information.

We tried very hard to overcome various challenges and now we have earned the praises from strangers and teachers. These are very valuable to use. Our team cooperation is the essential key to success.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The research on the industrial heritage helped our community to know the development history of the city that we are living in and to understand deeply about the development features of each stage. We believed that with this website, Taipei's features will be known to others. People will know Taipei better through the indicator industrial heritage of Taipei's history. Then the passion for Taipei and Taiwan's history will be inspired. Many people were pleased to see our passion towards cultural asset preservation, but at the same time, they were concerned about the youth now does not care about historical issues. We were all touched at the bottom of our heart.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Through the guide tour, personal contact with the PR department, and participation in activities (such as the Seminar on Urban Renewal), we had the chances to meet old employees, current managers, and experts and volunteers of cultural asset protection. Fortunately, the grandfather of one of our classmates was the former Director of one of the factories. We used the name cards made by ourselves to contact and exchange information with others.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We now care more about the local history and culture and we have better abilities to think critically about the pros and cons of each preservation method. We were able to speak out at group meetings as well as those with local residents and the public sector and we did not passively receive information.
