Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Yuh Shiuann Industries Co., Ltd., located in Xihu Township, Changhua County, Taiwan, is an agriculture-dominant township. Its specialty, the mutton hot pot, is well known in Taiwan! Yuh Shiuann Industries Co., Ltd. has sales stores in Taiwan, Korea and the U.S. The company manufactured the bicycle rims when it was first established. Later, in the aspect of unicycle, the company manufactures the special entry-level unicycles, special advanced-level unicycles and related unicycle accessories. The paradise of professional unicycles is quite an eye-opener to us.

2. Summary of Our Project

Mr. Chien-jen Huang, the head of Yuh Shiuann Industries Co., Ltd., is a referee of Taiwan's unicycle races. He often conducts voluntary work for the disadvantaged groups or remote schools and often go from place to place to make speeches to help the schools to cultivate the unicycling teachers, improve the unicycling teaching quality, and promote the unicycling teaching activities, leading the promotion of the folk sports. His promotes the unicycling enthusiastically. The vigorous development status of unicycling currently across Taiwan could be glimpsed from him. [Unicycle] is rare in our daily lives. There is a person rushing about silently for the unicycle –Mr. Chien-jen Huang. He is a loving, gentle and good-natured person that hopes to help the families, remote rural areas and disadvantaged groups needing help with the challenging “unicycling”! Let’s present a complete picture of the historical poem of how Mr. Chien-jen Huang, the biggest contributor of the unicycling, encountered the unicycle by chance, which is overflowed with sunshine human kindness and affectionate love and care.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.Team Problems

Even though we are all in the same class, it was difficult to find out who didn’t record progress or got lazy since there were ten members in the team. Therefore, the captain made a file folder for each of us, so that no one could hide if they were behind. Also, we could push those who were behind to catch up the progress and give applause to those who finished assignments.

2.Tug of War between Homework and Cyberfair Project We just got promoted to middle school. The academic pressure is getting heavier, and there are more and more artwork assignments, so it was hard to set aside time for interview.

3.The Challenges of Green Hands None of the team members has ever participated in Cyberfair, so we faced lots of challenges and frustrations. In the beginning, we didn’t know how to make progress reports or how to determine titles and subtitles for webpages correctly. It was awful. However, with the teacher’s instruction and help, we gradually worked better and better, and finally finished all works.

4.Insufficient Time Since there were monthly exams and Chinese New Year during the Cyberfair project, we decided to work in school during the winter break in order to finish the jobs. In the production process, everyone worked in front of computer all day long in order to complete every single job as soon as possible. Even at home, we had to write articles, so that we could complete the project on time.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The protagonist of our website, Mr. Chien-jen Huang, not only accepted our interview but also introduced several people for us to interview. He also shared many stories with moral truth with us, from which we learned a lot.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We had hard time searching for the project theme in the beginning. Finally, we chose Mr. Chien-jen Huang, who cares and helps society with unicycles, as our theme. In a country where the unicycle is not popular, he insists in caring and helping society with unicycles. Moreover, he has built a unicycle factory, YuhShiuann Industries, in Xihu Township where we live, so he is also the pride of Xihu. Because of these two factors, we chose Mr. Huang to be the main role of our Cyberfair project!

While we prepared data for the interview with Mr. Huang, the team members quarreled a lot due to disagreements over interview questions. Through the teacher’s lecture, we realized teamwork is the key to success. Since then, we always have peaceful discussions, and gradually, we developed the tacit understanding.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

In school, we can work almost everywhere. The Internet is available throughout the entire school; each e-classroom has Internet access and grouping computers; the computer lab has 40 new and fast quad-core PCs; the conference room where we primarily meet has a computer and projector; the math and physics e-classroom has a computer and movable electrical whiteboard; and, each of Registry Office, Instructor Room, and Student Affairs Office has 5-6 computers which can access to the Internet. Therefore, all students know how to utilize the Internet very well. Even though we continuously worked hard for the Cyberfair project, we wouldn’t make such great website without school’s resources!

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We chose Mr. Huang as the project theme because we wanted to perform on unicycles at the sports meet parade. Two of our classmates already know how to ride unicycle and are in a unicycle team. However, Mr. Huang was very busy, so it was very difficult for him to find free time for us. Besides, we also needed to interview many other people, so we had no choice but interviewed him on holidays or during class meetings. While visiting him, we took time to practice unicycle too.

We thank Mr. Huang for allowing us to bother him and giving us lots information. He also gave us his phone number and other contact methods, so that we could ask him questions at anytime.

When Taizhong Special Education visited him, he let us assist him and help explain the production flow of unicycle. We saw his true nature through the children’s enthusiastic response.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Since it’s our first time participating in Cyberfair project, we were not confident in the beginning. As for interview, we have faced many bottlenecks. Our team members often quarreled over trifles, and the progress was always behind, which made our teacher very angry. Some members almost withdrew. These matters taught us that “quarrel cannot solve problems and rational communication is the key to success.”

During the interview with Mr. Huang, we learned a lot from him. Whether it’s about caring or teaching, we learned different views from him. According to other people, we know Mr. Huang is a very respectable person and can be our role model.

In the process of Cyberfair project, everyone worked hard. Even though we are in the same class, we were like stranger to each other in the beginning. We became familiar with each other starting from discussing for interviews, and later we even built tacit agreement. There was no more embarrassing feeling, and we discovered that our advisory teacher, the dean of Pu-yan Middle School who taught us webpage and interview skills, and the upper class students are actually very enthusiastic under the solemn appearance.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

For the Cyberfair project, we interviewed many schools, principles, teachers, and students that we received help from Mr. Chien-jen Huang. They all did the best to help us with information we need. The touching stories in the webpages are told by Mr. Chien-jen Huang and them. They are not famous, but they are warmhearted. They helped us a lot but never asked for a reward. We are very touched. It’s hard to describe how grateful we are. We want to say thank you with the biggest sincerity.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

The Tough Beginnings

During these four months of working on the Cyberfair project, our team has experienced ups and downs. We had quarrels and sometimes laziness, but we have overcome all of these. Because of our efforts, we own the achievement. Even though it was toilsome participating in the Cyberfair project and we almost gave up in the beginning due to cluelessness, with the teacher’s support and team members’ cooperation, luckily we have today’s achievement. We always do our best to finish everything.

The Rewarding Endings

For the work that we, 10 people, teamed up to finish, not only did we obtain a great sense of accomplishment, but also the accumulated experiences and cohered affections. With the efforts of hard-working members, diligent instructors, supportive parents, and those who have helped us, we made it! Usually, a team leader is responsible for coordination only, but our very unique captain, who is also our spiritual pillar, often makes us laugh a lot. Our captain worked very hard, but when he said a word, our laughter would seem never stop. The writing group could write eloquent articles when they were in front of computer with earphone. The webpage design group could create blueprints with imagination shuttling in their mind. The art group could take wonderful photos with perseverance and draw beautiful pictures with creativity. From a series of discussions and teamwork, we discovered that everyone has one’s advantages and strengths and learned the right attitude to treat other “people”.
