Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The community we live in is a simple land without the hustle and bustle, a leisurely countryside and a vegetables homeland with fresh air and a strong human touch, namely, Puyan Township, a country in Taiwan. Looking ahead from Puyan Township, there are all green farmlands, adding extraordinary enthusiasm to this ordinary and small village. It has delicious glutinous rice and the endless glaringly green farmlands, not only comforting your eyes but also bringing pleasantness to your hearts. Before the beautiful panoramic view of Puyan, a poet can not help but “praising Puyan” in his new poem that “looking ahead, one sees nothing but plains and lush and green countryside; with the beautiful scenery within sight, it is a really eye-opener in Puyan; come to Puyan if one wants to travel to experience the kindness in the countryside and the picturesque scenery in view”.

2. Summary of Our Project

Travel through the world with a wheel, unicycle Yuh Shiuann Industries Co., Ltd. was established in 1993 when Taiwan's bicycle industry was booming and Mr. Chien-jen Huang, the owner of the company, joined this industry by taking advantage of this opportunity. The early days went not very well where there were lots of competitors and the small factory's production was not high. It did not have competitive price like the large-scale factories. However, this small business has a big dream. Caring for the disadvantaged and devotion to charity Although Yuh Shiuann is only a small local factory, not having gorgeous and big workshops or hundreds of employees, under the leadership of Mr. Huang, it exhibits the infinite love and strong human kindness, especially for the schools in the remote rural areas, the disadvantaged groups and the disabled people. It is a total dedication and devotion with an attitude of building up good relationships and karma and finding pleasure in doing so, which has created infinite love and movement and filled the hearts with the senses of sureness, beauty and happiness.

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1) Overcome problems and decide on directions Problems that involved lots of thinking always occupied a lengthy time. Nevertheless, rather than feeling frustrated, we should try to make an effort to contribute our ideas. When people’s divergent opinions caused a strain on the project members, we formed a circle and sat on the ground to discuss about directions for the team in an emotionally appealing manner. 2) Reorganize photos and video clips Due to an increasing number of data and photos we acquired after each tour, we had to sacrifice more time to categorize, organize, and edit them. We also collaborated on the same task with each individual working on different parts of the task to make things done more efficiently. 3) Academic study We couldn’t cease the Cyberfair project preparation when exams were around the corner. Although we were given one week without any Cyberfair project work prior to a semester exam, some project members needed two to three weeks’ time to prepare for the exam and some parents started to worry that their children might fall behind in school study. Therefore, before the exam, we decided to go to the library to study to very hard and to teach and encourage each other. We could only stay out of worries with everyone’s improved academic performance.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Unity is our symbol. Whenever faced with difficulties, we always strived to solve them and work on the same task through division of work. We also learned to be braver when encountering setbacks. Our team spirit as well as an important lesson that unicycles taught us was relentless courage that thrived and grew even stronger with challenges, never giving up, solidarity and love among project members, and strength in numbers.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Language ability: Producing articles with a total of 100,000 words in the process of studying and building websites did improve our abilities in expressing ourselves and writing. In addition, our English ability was improved by participating in this Cyberfair project. Logical thinking: our abilities in performing logical thinking, putting things in order, and categorization were all trained when we were arranging for the website structure. Our mind also became more lucid and bright. Aesthetic literacy: the processes of taking photos, selecting photos, and editing the website layout enhanced our creativity, knowledge and skills in arts, abilities of creating visual balance from an aesthetic perspective, and the knack of matching colors. Interpersonal relationships: we made new friends, established genuine friendship, learned the arts of solving any misunderstanding through communication, strengthened team camaraderie, and learned the ability of completing a variety of tasks through collaboration with team members. In summary, participating in this study made us acquire a great deal of knowledge that textbooks couldn’t teach us and observe our personal growth in all aspects.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

When the project was in progress, project members met at a school computer classroom at lunch break every day. The computer classroom had 40 personal computers which were connected to the Internet. We used Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop CS6 to edit texts and images respectively. Our mentoring teacher also built an online platform for all project members to interact and allocate tasks on line anytime and anywhere. At tours, students in the photography team took photos and films with their SLR cameras, cell phones, and tablet computers. In the meanwhile, students in the interview group carried a MP3 player to record interviews anytime. To finish, Facebook was essentially our best friend for we practically used it to share images, texts, videos, and carry out a variety of communication and coordination tasks online. Also, we would like to thank many teachers and parents in the community for lending us relevant equipment.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

While going on the study tours, we were aware that we represented our school. As such, we received constant instructions and correction on our skills from Teacher Yen-Chen Lin in order to train our manners, interview skills, and courage. To practice for an interview with Mr. Chien-jen Huang, we even did a rehearsal with the school principal as our interviewee, which did a fantastic job in boosting our courage and skills before the actual interview with Mr. Huang. We also added all project members and Mr. Huang to our Facebook group. In doing so, we could interact with all project members and interviewees anytime and anywhere we wished to. After going on0 tens of tours, we became able to excel at those interviews, which were either carried out in person, online, or over the phone. In order to show our gratitude for our mentoring teacher, our interviewee Mr. Huang, and all community people who had helped us, we planned and held a thank-you party after this study. This party was a wonderful event with barbeques and singing activities along with countless laughers and touching moments.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The encounter with Yuh Shiuann Industries Co., Ltd. gave us an insight into the spirit behind a unicycle, which symbolizes love, persistence, and mutual assistance. We also learned the importance of unity in the process. As the proverb goes, “Five unified people make a tiger, ten unified people make a dragon, and a hundred unified people make a mountain”, it implies that nothing in the world is truly difficult if everyone collaborates. In an attempt to touring across towns on a unicycle, we received jubilant and boisterous cheers from villagers on the way, which was very touching! As armature cyclists, we were almost unable to navigate a unicycle independently and instead thought it was easier to go a longer way with two cyclists holding each other’s hands. This is the important lesson and personal growth that we benefited from riding a unicycle.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

While working on the Cyberfair project, we received assistance from a number of significant others. We would especially like to thank Teacher Yen-chen Lin, who gave us an abundance of advice, enlightened us on how to make a better project, and told us that once we had decided to work on the project, we had to do a fantastic job. We also thank the warm hospitality of Yuh Shiuann Industries Co., Ltd. Chairman Mr. Chien-jen Huang, whose meticulous elucidations effectively triggered our thoughts and feelings. He also gave comprehensive answers to our questions and shared with us the best of his knowledge instead of hiding or reserving anything from us, which provided us with more information we needed to bring out webpages to perfection. We also thank those parents who transported us from and forth destinations of our study tours, as well as each person who supported our participation in the Cyberfair project. Their support strengthened our determination. We also set a goal for ourselves, which was to make an all-out effort to get this project done very well! We wouldn’t have been able to complete the project singlehandedly. Instead, it was those people’s support and encouragement that enabled us to get those webpages done smoothly and painlessly. For this, we would like to express our gratitude for everyone.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Time flied, and the four-month competition was coming to an end. During the four months, it was Teacher Yen-chen Lin’s instructions which assisted us to complete the research proposal and building or website. It was also our project members’ strenuous efforts to get the project done excellently. During the process, we encountered enormous setbacks but we never gave up. On the contrary, we endeavored to come up with solutions for problems one by one through brainstorming. As exhausting as it is, we are fully determined to sticking it out and never giving up. The journey resembles learning to ride a unicycle in that both tasks require persistence, perseverance, and fight till the end! At this moment, what we hope for is to make our best efforts. Although it might not be perfect, at least we have tried. We also hope to win honor to glorify our school. With only a few days left, everyone is having adrenaline running high while the air is infused with a nerve-racking and an intense atmosphere. However, this stormy challenge is a great challenge in our lives so we have to put in extra efforts to produce marvelous results. In a few days, we would be able to embrace the rainbow on a clear sky after rain and reap the fruits that we planted in blood, sweat and tears.
