Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Lukang Township, Changhua County is adjacent with Taiwan Strait to the west, Xiushui Township to the east, Fuxing Township to the south, and Xianxi Township and Hemei Township to the north. “Lukan” means “deer harbor” in Chinese. It is said that there used to be lots of deer living in this area, so it was named Lukang. Lukang, once a prosperous city in the past, is one of a few places in Taiwan where the traditional craft continues developing and is the cradle of “National Art Heritage Award” winners. Everyone would fall in love with this old town once tasting the famous local snacks. Lukang is well-known in its numerous local snacks, historical sites, and scholars.

2. Summary of Our Project

This project introduces the Buddha statue carving art, a traditional craft in Lukang that has gradually been forgotten in the times of social change and development. Lukang is an artist village where you can find many Heritage Award winners, Craft Award winners, and unique craft artists. It is worth a trip to Lukang for those who love creative traditional craft. Therefore, after a few trips to Lukang, we chose “Master Chih-hui Shih - National treasure in Buddha statue sculpture” for the project topic, to discuss the traditional Buddha statue carving art and explore its art forms and cultural content. We would like to present the traditional Buddha statue carving art of Lukang to help Taiwanese see more about Taiwan and let the world see the beauty of Taiwan.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

(1)Technology: In the beginning, some team members were not familiar with web production such as webpage folder, webpage text formats, filename, and image processing. Luckily, we had Teacher Chi-rong Huang, Teacher Jie-ren Huang, and Teacher Chi-lang Yang, who guided us to get familiar with these computer skills and to support each other for our problems. (2)Experience: We were inexperienced in interviewing people, so we discussed the interview content, goal, work, and precautions before the interview. We also carried a voice recorder, recording pen, and digital camera to record audios, videos, and texts. (3)Language: Our Taiwanese is not fluent, so we had Teacher Chi-rong Huang translate for us. (4)Time: Due to heavy schoolwork, our time was very limited, so we had to utilize lunch hours well, in addition to the original project training time, to work hard in the computer room and to complete the project on time. For efficiency, we planned the project, distributed work, and followed the schedule. Before each trip, we listed our goal and the succeeding work, and then we completed it.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

This is the first time our team members participated in a “team-based” research. Some of them may have participated in science contests. Compared to other contests, the “team-based” project gives participants more learning opportunities and challenges. For instance, they have to do many things by themselves, such as contacting the craft masters for an interview time, brainstorming for interview questions, distributing work, organizing information, and arranging content and outline. The major difference of the contest from others is that we get to meet the local people, besides exploring knowledge. In the process of the project, the members learned the attitude for life, which is the skilled, sophisticated, methodical, and meticulous spirit of craftsmanship. We thank our project advisor, Teacher Chi-lang Yang, who guided and watched us through the whole process. We thank Master Shih for his advice and Mr. Chi-nong Huang, a famous photographer, for providing Master Shih’s photos. We …

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In accordance with the education philosophy of Grade 1-9 Curriculum: The Ministry of Education announced the Grade 1-9 Curriculum outline. The purpose is to “train citizens to have a humanistic perspective, integrative capability, democratic manner, both local and international awareness, and lifelong learning attitude.” It emphasizes that the curriculum should be for practical living, respect for personality development, establishing exploration and reflecting capability, and even promoting the care for society, the environment, nature, the identity of local culture, and the respect and appreciation for other cultures. The purpose of the project “Master Chih-hui Shih - National treasure of Buddha statue sculpture” is to introduce the Buddha statue carving art and the community culture to the youth and the society through the process of research and interview. While the students explored the fine traditional culture and art of their hometown, they were involved in their surrounding environment and customs, and learned the cultural background and development of Buddha statue carving. During the study, they learned to work with others and to actively solve problems. These are in accordance with the education philosophy of Grade 1-9 Curriculum. It’s been more than a month since we joined the contest. I am glad to see all members are able to share the work. After repeatedly visiting the traditional craft master, the members already have a better understanding of Lukang. The project involves the domains and local courses of the Grade 1-9 Curriculum. All members learned many capabilities that will last forever, as the Grade 1-9 Curriculum repeatedly stresses.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

For this Cyberfair project, in addition to our teamwork spirit and great efforts, we also visited a number of local people such as Lukang Township Mayor, Cheng-yuan Huang, Principal Ching-ren Li, PTA President Wen-hui Chang, former PTA President Shi-chuan Chen, and Master Shih. They all did their best to support us, so that we learned a lot. First, we would like to thank the mayor and principle for agreeing to the interview, recognizing our efforts in the research of local art, and giving us lots of encouragement and support. When visiting Master Shih, he generously showed his vivid and delicate works to us. We took lots of pictures of his works, wanting to preserve the beautiful art works in our memory. He patiently explained the Buddha statue carving to us, step by step, while letting us practice carving and painting. His patience allowed us to carve or paint our works in a pleasant atmosphere and gave us a sense of achievement. Thanks to his teaching. We admire his skillful craftsmanship.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

(1) About beauty There are lots of temples and Buddha statues in Lukang. Through the Cyberfair project, we got a better understanding of the Buddha statue carving and found the beauty of traditional culture of Lukang. (2) Our information literacy The Cyberfair project is presented in the form of webpages, which requires the use of a lot of information technology. For being able to use the information devices fluently, we learned many software and hardware tools to enrich our computer knowledge, so that we could skillfully use computer products. (3) The joy of sharing Taiwan’s traditional art is invaluable to us. We must not only cherish it but also need to pass it down. Through the Cyberfair project, we share our experience with others and present the cultural assets of Lukang to the world via the Internet. We believe that the people who live in this land will see another beauty of Taiwan through our Cyberfair project and the whole world will learn more about Taiwan through our webpages

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

For this Cyberfair project, in addition to our teamwork spirit and great efforts, we also visited a number of local people such as Lukang Township Mayor, Cheng-yuan Huang, Principal Ching-ren Li, PTA President Wen-hui Chang, former PTA President Shi-chuan Chen, and Master Shih. They all did their best to support us, so that we learned a lot. First, we would like to thank the mayor and principle for agreeing to the interview, recognizing our efforts in the research of local art, and giving us lots of encouragement and support.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

After working hard for months, we’ve learned to process information and produce webpages. We’ve experienced setbacks and hard times, but we continuously encouraged one another, worked hard, and opened our eyes to the knowledge of the Buddha statue carving art and learning production. Even though we sacrificed sleep and leisure time, our hard work resulted in a satisfying, completed project. Every lively Buddha statue is another one of Master Shih’s masterpieces. The efforts he put into each one are invaluable. Behind the art treasures, there hides a quiet and simple soul that inherits the folk art in silence. We are glad to introduce these beautiful objects to the world, through webpages. Hopefully, everyone is able to enjoy the beautiful art and customs and learn more about Lukang. It is the responsibility and pride of Lukang residents.
