Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The egg production in Kaohsiung in centralized in Lujhu, Alian, Neihu, Renwu and YenChao. There are 116 factories and 3145882 chickens. There are 15566649 eggs produced every day. Farmers feed hens mainly by traditional way. There has been a farmer located in Alian using enriched feed to feed the hens. It is purchasable on the market. Under government’s support, the manufacturer wanting to transform to Egg-production-friendly system can get technical and financial consultant. It’s helpful to manufacturer to have great vision.

2. Summary of Our Project

The price of eggs is reasonable and it contains rich nutrition. However, people only concern about the cost-effectiveness, maximizing the value of benefits, and they neglect animal welfare, regarding chickens as eggs machines. Though this issue, we want people to understand and then support Egg-production-friendly system. In this way, the process of production will consistent with animal welfare, and consumers not need to worry about animal drugs (Antibiotic). It is more healthy and safety for human. Consumers can choose “friendly” eggs, so more farmers will join Egg-production-friendly system, enhancing eggs quality and ensuring the health of consumers.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1. Assistance from Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan: According to the regulation, Egg-production-friendly system, from Council of Agriculture, we want to realize the concepts when government formulated the rules, and the implementation in the future. Generally speaking, Council of Agriculture should do visit contact and send relevant personnel to guide us. It is a burden and costly- expense for us parents to take us to the North part, so we sent E-mail to the Council to tell the problems. At first, we thought we wouldn’t get any reply, but we got official firsthand policy documents and respond immediately. We sincere thanks to the assistance of all units 2. The range definition of Animal welfare for laying hens: According to literature, laying hens animal welfare issues including wings, pecking the ground, walking, nesting habitat, sand bath, cut beak (reduce hurting each other), forced molting (reducing food or starve, shorten molting time and stimulate hens hen to lay eggs again) and other parts, the range is very wide and deep difficulty. We refer to policy, 'Egg production system definitions and standards' from the Council of Agriculture, we set scoping wings, pecking the ground, walking, nesting, sand bath and part of the natural behavior of chickens in the scope of our study. In this way, we minimized the range of the study, and more suitable for the students.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We can see people abandon animals, playing fish-catching game and regarding animals as prizes in our daily life. All of those go against to the Animal Welfare. In addition to caring laying hens, we also want to make effort on other animals. We joined Cyberfair to make the public to see us works. We hoped our research can root in people’s mind, showing our respect, concern and being friendly on all animals.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

1.By reading documents, planning for the content of questionnaire, preparing for the interview and documenting the interview, the thinking, expression, reading and writing skills are improved. 2.By questionnaire statistics and the process of creating charts, the graphic concepts are enhanced. 3.By chosing high-quality and safety eggs produced by Egg-production-friendly system, make people healthier and ecological more harmonious.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We use computers to process word and image data and design web pages, internet for information inquiry, receive and send email, cloud hard drive, transferring website, digital cameras for photos and videos taking. Telephone and mobile phone for communication and contact.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The contact people: Dealers of farms, school dietitians, egg supplier, and related people. Ambassador: Visit different farms that used different rearing methods, understanding farmers’ efforts, difficulties, and life education. Through interview with dealers, we understand the principles of selection of eggs, source purchase, the views on animal welfare and the situations of supporting “Friendly eggs”.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

According to our survey 1. About 70% of students agree with Egg-production-friendly system and Animal Welfare; About 60% of respondents are willing to buy. 2. 98% of respondents hoping dealers using friendly way to raise hens to ensure quality and safety of eggs. Over 98% people are willing to buy them in higher price.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Firstly, we visited a veterinarian to learn tradition cage lower production costs, but go against Animal Welfare. Under the assistance of Council of Agriculture, we understood the norms of egg-production-friendly system and the importance of Animal Welfare, knowing if we value Animal Welfare, we will have nutrient and high-quality eggs. Second, through visit stockbreeding farm, we understand dealer’s difficulty, how to make balance between costs and Animal Welfare. Understanding the principles of how do people chose eggs by questionnaire survey, we found out “egg-production-friendly system” is the best balance between dealer, consumer and laying hens. In addition, to change laying hens’ destiny, we not only advocated students and community, but also visit legislator office and the Kaohsiung Farm Bureau to learn acts and policy. Hoping through our efforts, more and more people can support “Egg-production-friendly system”. During the process, we challenge ourselves and become more confident. We will keep the experience in minds, making more achievement in the future learning.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Eggs are involved in human economic and animal welfare. Human always take the benefits. Consumers should jump out the costs consideration, support Egg-production-friendly system. Consumers can also choose “friendly” eggs, so more farmers will join Egg-production-friendly system, enhancing eggs quality and ensuring the health of consumers. Lessons To satisfy consumers’ thoughts of buying cheap items, the dealers lower cost of production, and go against with the Animals Welfare, regarding hens as egg machine. However, are the consumers that only want lower price pushing them to do it? It is a lesson for human. Surprise Taiwan has pay attention on hen friendly-breeding issue, like countries in European Union. Council of Agriculture has formulated the “definitions and standards of egg production system”, and local governments also cooperate actively. We believe under the joint efforts of government, dealers, and consumers, our eggs issue will like England and Germany’s, emphasizing on animal welfare, promoting human health and friendly farming and production. The better life is coming soon.
