Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Yongkang Business District is defined broadly as the area centered Yongkang Park, including the lanes between Xinyi Rd. and Jinhua St., lanes between Lishui St. and Jinshan S. Rd. Section 2, and a small part of Xinyi Rd. Section 2 between Jinhua St. and Yongkong St.

2. Summary of Our Project

There are 7 sections in our website: “History” discusses the Yongkang Business District development history; “Flavor” introduces selected shops in Yongkang Business District; “Professionals” understands the shop owners’ management stories; “Interview” illustrates the stories about the district by interviewing the key people; “Note” explores Yongkang from 6 different perspectives; “Development” records our thoughts about Yongkang Business District; “About Us” shares our experience about producing this website.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

We use the optical networks in the computer classroom, which offers sufficient network resource and bandwidth. Sometimes we bring our own laptops to the school, accessing the internet with 3G coverage. At home, the internet access environment varies since some members have ADSL, some have optical networks, and some have TV broadband. We don’t have big issue in terms of computer or internet access.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.The biggest barrier is that we always fall behind a lot in our working schedule! We couldn’t match each others’ schedules usually since our schoolwork loading is very heavy. Sometimes our members would submit the articles late and thus we couldn’t upload the webpage as scheduled. We caught up in the winter vacation and back to the normal track generally and thus came to the final stage eventually. 2.We had a lot of arguments at the beginning when we were making the decision of project theme. Everyone insisted in his/ her own ideas without any flexibility, and thus there was no efficiency in discussion. Everyone had different thought about the webpage typesetting or color. Eventually we made the decision by voting and asking support from the teachers. We also understood that, with more and more understanding about our website, what we insisted in might not be the ideal, although those people whose suggestions weren’t picked up might be uncomfortable at first. We understood that a good website should be liked by other people, not individual self only; so now we can accept other people’s ideas and figure out the best way to the whole. 3.In the process, we couldn’t make our all of our ideas true because of technology; we are suffered from this problem. From the beginning of conceiving the topic, through deliberating the webpage layout and the basic content, we strive very hard to get the initial plan. However, we found that how difficult it is when we made it down to earth. There were so many thoughts which were over our technology ability that we had to re-plan our project.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Through the webpage creation, we are more familiar with the software such as Photcap and Photoshop for editing pictures, Dreamweaver for making webpage, and even Excel for making graphs. The more important thing is that we realize how to teamwork well, and understand the importance and value of cooperation. In addition, we learn how to get suitable solutions. For example, we found that it would be more efficient when we did the survey in several small groups even though we were still given some cold shoulder. Furthermore, we would be calm down to figure out the difficult points when the webpage outcome was different from what we expected. We thus also realized that everyone is very important since we have our own specialty and strength; our website won’t be perfect or successful without any of us.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In the process, we learned a lot of skills and abilities: we learned how to practice Dreamweaver and other sets of graphic software well, to make our website excellent in both pictures and literary compositions. In terms of the contents, we learned how to design a sufficient questionnaire and interview, and how to rearrange and show out what we got from the interviews. When we interviewed the stores, we sometimes were divided as boy group and girl group to interview different areas; sometimes we went to the stores as a whole group. Everyone has different responsibilities; member who is more confident asked the questions, who could write down very fact recorded the interview, and other members took pictures, videotaped, and understood the map. In terms of making the webpage, each person has his/ her own duties; some people wrote the article, some illustrated the pictures, and some programmed. After all, everyone enjoyed the webpage creation! Our learning on campus is passive. We concentrate in textbooks only and have rare chance to participate in community activities. However, because of this project, we thus have the opportunities to interview people on street, and to have more understanding and knowledge about this district by learning online and reviewing articles/ books. Other valuable experience is that we analyzed the survey result and learned the graphics.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Our group is named as Bliss Yongkang Express, focusing on fieldwork, and discovering the specialties and challenges of this district, to let people realize the district’s characters and diversities. In addition, we were acted as community ambassadors by interviewing relevant local people and discovering different dimensions from different point of views.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Yongkong Business District to us was just a place of fine food, before doing this project. What we had known were just those well-known restaurants. We hadn’t explored this place; we just knew the not-big park centered in the district. After confirming the topic, we started to pay more attention to this district, and thus discovered that this is really a wonderland. In addition to delicacies, there are many different cultures. This district becomes flourishing because it’s supported by a lot of people who contribute themselves hard. Nowadays, Yongkong Business District is as rich and colorful as Xinyi District which we projected last time. This time, our topic is mainly focused on bliss. We want to guide people to explore Yongkong Business District from this point of view, share those shopping spots know by local only, and take people to understand in depth about the district’s charming parts.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We explored people related to Yongkang Business District by searching on internet and reviewing online news in advance. According to our interview, we discovered more and more histories and the development about this district. For example, we understand the tree protection movement’s process and impact by interviewing teacher Su. The movement helped those 59 trees in the Yongkang Park stay even now, and thus this district developed as a special district with green and humanities. In addition, when we interviewed the owner of SeFa 58, Rei, he mentioned that “Yongkang Business District is more relaxing and less crowded than other districts.” Thus we can tell that this district has its own specialties. In addition, Rei played sanshin and sang to us at the break when he was interviewed. Rei and his friends play a band and perform in Yongkang Park regularly; people can go to appreciate and thus have different humanities experience.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In the process, we would go to the district to resupply the pictures as long as we found what pictures we have are not sufficient. And thus we explore all fine food in Yongkong Business District, which is very interesting! In addition, we truly realized how flourishing the district will be after MRT Dongmen Station functions since on New Year’s Eve of 2013, we seven people got together to take pictures in the district and it was very crowded! We spent 10 months to finish this project. The process is hard and suffered, but also filled with laugh. The more important thing is that we got the bliss which is priceless when we saw our website creation.
