Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Tien Cheng Elementary School is located in Puyan Township, Changhua County, famously known as the “hometown of vegetables” and “hometown of sweet rice”. A-zen’s Steamed Pork Buns, located in Lukang Township, Changhua County, is a well-known local traditional bakery. Its owner, with constant innovation and ingenuity, adds Chinese and Western elements to the ancestral bakery to create many new products, and insists on selling products made of fresh, safe, and healthy ingredients to consumers. In a time where food safety problems are a social concern, the owner’s insistence is valued.

2. Summary of Our Project

The project studies the business philosophy, developing history, product development, and marketing channels of A-zen’s Steamed Pork Buns. Through visiting the store, interviewing the owner, collecting data, organizing information, and attending many activities, the project learns about the business philosophy of A-zen’s Steamed Pork Buns. The project also designs questionnaires to see what consumers think and suggest to A-zen’s Steamed Pork Buns. Finally, the members of the project and the owner of A-zen’s Steamed Pork Buns work together to send love to the corners of society with the steamed buns.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Since this was the first time for students to proceed in PBL (Problem-Based Learning), the first difficulty we encountered was how to assertively teach students to get familiar with the skills and atmosphere of data collection and group discussion. Fortunately, under the instruction and demonstration of teachers, students gradually got ahold of the skills of Internet searching and data analysis. At the same time, with the brainstorming atmosphere supported and guided by instructors, the students found the answers for the problems, one after another. It was also difficult for a research team to teach student to design questionnaires. Because students lack investigative and research experiences, and we were limited by time, we tried to guide and teach students by showing them other questionnaire samples. Then we let them discuss to decide the infrastructure, style, and content of the questionnaires together.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

With “insistence, conscience, and innovation”, A-zen’s Steamed Pork Buns makes traditional gourmet food flourish; with healthy ingredients, excellent skills, and delicious taste, it has earned a reputation in Japan. In this Cyberfair project, we, The Gourmet Team of Steamed Buns, deeply understand “Vision without action is only a daydream” from our actions of discussing a topic, planning for research, collecting data, organizing documents, counting for survey results, and making the website. The advertisement of a well-known sports brand, “Just do it”, explains what we feel!

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Phone: We used the city phones and cell phones to contact related people. Digital Camera: Sony DSC RX-10, Sony NEX-5R, Nikon COOLPIX S5100, Iphone4s Computer software: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Powerpoint, Adobe CS3web premium, SPSS12, Photocap 6 Library: We used school library books to study the history of steamed buns and organized the collected data for the Cyberfair project. Survey: We randomly selected 150 clients in A-zen’s Steamed Pork Buns to answer the questionnaire with handwriting; we then analyzed the survey. On-site Interview: After contacting for an interview appointment, we searched and organized information, designed interview outlines, and prepared well for the interview. On the interview date, we visited A-zen’s Steamed Pork Buns and learned the process of their food production. Since we have prepared many questions, it was a successful visit.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In the project, the students, growing in rural areas, personally interviewed Mr. Cheng, the employees, and his children, in order to understand Mr. Cheng’s philosophy of “Plebeian Gourmet”. Besides learning more about the production of the steamed buns, the students were also impressed by Mr. Cheng’s sharing of his philosophy of life. Based on the spirit of “Give back to society”, the students and Mr. Cheng visited Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Children’s Home in Lukang Township for a charity event. The students learned that a small steamed bun is not only food on the table, but it can be a warm touch to the disadvantaged. Raise up the light a little and you can light up more people. The students are inspired that through love, the world keeps moving.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Food is very important in our daily life. The economic development has brought wealth to society; people have changed their requirement of food from filling stomachs to being delicious and delicate. For attracting customers, all food businesses have tried to enhance the color, smell, and taste of their food products. In order to reduce costs and improve taste, many businesses choose to add chemicals to food, which worries consumers in regards to food safety. A-zen’s Steamed Pork Buns insists on keeping food plain without any chemicals, making fresh and healthy food with real ingredients, and selling just-made food products; the strict self-requirement makes A-zen’s Steamed Pork Buns a successful business. After succeeding in business, Mr. Cheng still regularly visits the orphanage and helps the disadvantaged. To follow Mr. Cheng’s loving heart, we played the ocarina for the children in orphanage on Christmas Eve, wishing them to grow up peacefully and joyfully.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

During the study, A-Zen Bakery's owner, Mr. Cheng tried his best to help our Cyberfair project. Forexample, He let us visit the production process of baozi, and interview his employees. He also led us to the Immaculate Heart Center for Mentally Handicapped for charity work. Without Mr. Cheng's help, we could never accomplish this project.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Through the project, we discovered that the process of an ordinary steamed bun could contain such great knowledge. From the raw ingredients, adjusting proportions, fermentation time, steam time, and others, as long as there is an error, the entire process has to be started over. The steamed buns taste great due to so many complicated steps. In the course of DIY steamed buns, we experimented with filling the stuffing into dough. We tried many times but never succeeded. Mr. Cheng said that it takes half a year just for most apprentices to practice making a perfect bun of 16 folds. Also, in his free time, Mr. Cheng likes to read, surf the Internet, listen to music, and learn knowledge in different fields, which teaches us passion and insistence. In the interview with employees, we learned that Mr. Cheng treats the employees as his own and everyone with sincerity, and is willing to impart his knowledge and help the disadvantaged. We have learned a lot from his humble attitude towards people.
