Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Bandung is the capital of West Java province in Indonesia with a population of 2.4 million . Living in the big city like Bandung is extraordinary because of its various religions, tribes, cultures, social economy and others. There are a lot of convenient things in Bandung, such as,lovely view, unique culture, amazing tourism spots, awesome historical heritage, etc. However, Bandung has some problems that should thought by the leader and its community. If the problems can be solved, it is not impossible that Bandung can be one of the cities with international standard in Indonesia. There are seven common issues in Bandung which are urgently needed to be managed well: traffic Jam, Flooding, Shopping center location management, The management of green open space and the motor bike Genk terror. The Major of Bandung as the representative of the government should have good concept to manage the city and solve all the problems. The first concept is to determine the composition of buildings and the green open space. It should be 30 percent for green open space and 70 percent for buildings and street. Second is to change the community life style. It is not easy but it should be done to revert to the green life style. The third is the sustainable development, it should be balance on the development of economy, social and environment. The fourth is that the good city should have a good and transparent vision for the community to make them know and understand the policy of the government to make the city better. The last is that the good political will from the leader to create and build the good city and not money oriented. Our hope to conduct those concepts is aimed to the new mayor, Ridwan Kamil.

2. Summary of Our Project

Bandung is a big city with big population and intelligent community which has motivation, imagination and creativity. It is the main resource of the city because the community will determine the future of the city and the city support to adapt and survive from crises and transition. Bandung is now has some major problems, the city should find the solution to solve them. It is not only depend to the community to solve the problems but also to the leader who has the community trust to plan and manage it. It is the big challenge for the leader to be able to think, plan and act creatively and make all the innovation to be a reality. The students are going to learn from the leading action of the local leader by finding out: The background of the local leader, the biography of the local leader, the achievements of the local leader, what is the vision and mission of the local leader and what he has done for the community. The data will be collected through observation, references and interview. First, the students is going to take a field trip to the mayor office and have an interview with the Mayor, Ridwan Kamil. Second, they are going to conduct research on internet to gather additional and more details information about the Mayor. Third, they are going to conduct research at the library to research the information. Finally, they are going to post the result of the research on the website. By doing the project, it is hope that the students will learn some basic facts of their local government and gain knowledge about the city's problem and how to manage and solve it. The students will also learn about the leadership skill by observing the good example from the local leader.

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our students are very familiar with technology. At class, the teachers deliver the teaching materials by using ICT. Most of the students' work is accomplished by using ICT, especially for the project based learning program. The school provides free internet access for the teachers and students. We can use this facility at school's time.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We had some problems when we were conducting the project. The first was to selecting the members of the team. There were a lot of students who wanted to participate and we had to choose them carefully based on their skills and interests. The schedule of the program had to be arranged well because the students were from different classes and the number of the team this year was more than last year. The other problem was still the fund support from school. We did not have any financial support for the project from school, so the students and the teachers should find our own fund. The link to have interview to the mayor was also the problem but we could manage it well, at last.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The students and teachers got a lot of benefits from the poject. The students could learn the leadership principles from the local leader. They can apply it in their life to be responsible , dicipline and confident in taking a decision. They also could know more about the city's problems and became more aware to their community. The teachers also learnt the same and it was also the opportunity for the teachers to develop their professional life by conducting the project. The school gained a positive point because the life skill learning through the implementation of project based learning was implemented. The community got the positive effect to have such bright students who had great attention to their community.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The 2013 curriculum in Indonesia emphasizes on the balance between attitude, skills and knowledge. It is based on the consideration that there are a lot of students who don't have character, tolerance for others and empathy for others. Therefore , the religious instruction is needed because a lack of moral development has led to an increase in violence among youths, and that could fuel social unrest and corruption in the future. The Cyberfair project addressed the issue of character education. The students learnt leadership values and know how to show the problems in the community. It arose the awareness to have empathy to others. This new knowledge was meaningful for their life skill. The students also learnt how to write descriptive report texts to describe the local leader and biographical recount to retell his life experience. It makes the project fit into the requirements of the curriculum, school and Class. By doing the project, teachers realized that the implementation of project based learning which is supported by technology was a meaningful experience for both students and teachers. It could enhance students' skill in English and also motivate them to learn more.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

The project was supported by technology. The students used their personal computer to do their written work. Video, digital camera , and tape recorder helped them to record the interview with the mayor and take some pictures while they were with him. Computer software was used to develop their web page and they searched references from libraries, book, newspaper and had an oral interview with the mayor. The students had their own tools and the technology helped them much to finish the project. The most valuable tool was personal computer because most all of the work was finished by using the tool.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The students informed the parents, people around them and their friends in other countries about the project. The students could explain well about the project to them and got a lot of support, including the link to the mayor. The students did some interviews with some people in the community and their main interview was with the mayor to finish their project. Their response on the project was very positive. The students advertised their webpage on their face book and twitter and asked their friends and people in their community, in other cities and countries to post their comments about their work on the comment space at their webpage. Most of the comments were very positive and encouraging.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We have learned a lot about leadership. This is very valuable for us and we also met the Mayor which was a pleasant surprise and we were so proud of it. If we win the project, we will make him proud too.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The team needed a lot of support not only from their teachers but also from their community and their international links. The parents also gave us a lot support by providing us the link to the Mayor , some of people in the community helped us much to gather information about the Mayor, especially the people from the Mayor office and the people who knows the Mayor in person. We also got helped from our international project partner from Korea, Australia and Malaysia. They gave us a lot of comments and suggestion. We are very thankful to them.
