Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Yin town Bazhou district is located at the junction of 3 counties of Ba, Yi, Lang, and scenery is beautiful here with talented people. Big Wood Mountain, located in the junction among the county of Ba and Lang, is more beautiful, just as wonderland. The particular stone sculptures on mountain are art treasures. Big Wood Mountain was largely ignored the past, now it is hot, which it has great relation with a man over 60.

2. Summary of Our Project

After many visits to the Big Wood Mountain in person, we have deep awareness of tourism culture in hometown, further understand a giant below the Mountain---Yuan Jiaxiang...... Through the understanding of the old man in many aspects, we feel quite a lot and gain more.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our school use ADSL to access the network, students don't access to the web at home. 2 computers in school office can access Internet, but computer configuration is relatively low and work much slower. There is no computer classroom in school, so the website is build by students under the guidance of teacher, which completed on the teachers' office computer by using of our spare time.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Difficult: Computer network speed is slow, school students aren't familiar with image processing software, strange to the web page creation, severe deficiency of team activities. Countermeasures: fully use the extracurricular time to find information online, learning and using, consult the teacher more, make full use of the weekends and extracurricular activities Tips: as long as willing to make brain-storm, there's always way. Through the study, we quickly mastered the essentials of image processing software, carefully arrange the activity plan.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Yuan Jiaxiang is only an ordinary civil affairs assistant, but he shares difficulty for the government and solves problems for the people, for society with all heart, devoting to the person, who is the pride of Yin Jia people. Through contacting with the old man over 60, we have a more profound understanding of the 'great man' by side. Although our strength is still very thin, all aspects of the level is not high, we already pass selfless dedication of the noble quality of Yuan Jiaxiang to friends all over the world. More than 50 days, for a common goal, though very hard, we get more is happy! Believe that through our efforts, we will have a deeper knowledge of our hometown, a better understanding of people in hometown!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In order to let more people know about my hometown, understand Yuan Jiaxiang, understand his selfless dedication and noble quality for the interests of the people, our team made a bold decision: share what we saw and heard of one month with the entire school students. We separately promoted this spirit to each class in all forms, especially the spirit of no personal gain and loss, only serving for the people. Through this activity, it cultivates students’ communication skill, which also makes the whole school students share our achievements.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Hardware: computer, digital camera, DV, scanner Software: Photoshop7.0,Microsoft Word, Macromedia Dreamweaver

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In the process of our research, we visited many people of the Big Wood Mountain surrounding parts, the local cadres and celebrities, etc. We also share our harvest with students. The most important thing is that we want people to know the history of Yin Jia, understand the Big Wood Mountain, know the story behind the Big Wood Mountain, deeply feel Yuan Jiaxiang old man’s selfless dedicated spirit, and he can act as an example of standard to require ourselves to be a civilized person of Yin Jia.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Without our study, our students including a lot of people in our hometown know little about the Big Wood Mountain of Yin Jia, also almost unknown the 'great man' Yuan Jiaxiang by the side. Through our research, we share our research results with students and fellow-townsmen, let them know the 'great man' of the hometown, more understand the model of the side, understand fellow-townsmen---Yuan Jiaxiang’s charm.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Our material is mainly got through visit and interview. Yuan Jiaxiang of Civil Affairs Department gave us a lot of information, especially related pictures in the Big Wood Mountain, at the same time when accepting our interviews, he also told us a lot of Red Army stories of the mountain area and its legends. Some people also participated in our interview, the school students cooperated with us for our work. And, of course, the instructor gave us a lot of guidance.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In the process of research, we found that the profound research to a project is really not easy. We have grown up in Yin Jia, and it is only 10 miles road apart from the Big Wood Mountain, we just heard it before, occasionally incense and prayer to the Mountain...... but we all don't know too much story behind the mountain. Now in-depth understanding and research of the hidden story, I also found much knowledge we didn't know, such as behind each book rock there has a moving story, every cave hiding a period of unknown history. Through the visit, we also see that there are a lot of people who get rich but don't forget fellow-townsmen, there are also many people pay little attention to village culture, even being bland to it and less understanding of Big Wood Mountain, we hope through this project more people will know and pay attention to Big Wood Mountain, let more people love their hometown, spend an own effort to build their hometown! Of course, the biggest harvest is further understanding Yuan Jiaxiang, realizing his noble character of wholeheartedly for the people and his selfless dedication spirit realm.
