Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The Little Flower School, located on North Wading River Road, Wading River, New York, is the only residential Special Act public school district on Long Island. Little Flower was originally founded as a Catholic parochial school in 1931 by a nationally acclaimed educator of disadvantaged children, Mother Katherine Drexel, of Philadelphia. She spent her considerable inheritance as a Drexel family heiress to establish sixty-two schools for disadvantaged children throughout the United States.

2. Summary of Our Project

Students chose to highlight the school eatery, Scrambles. It is a local attraction that they run on a weekly basis. The students do everything from shopping to executing meals. It is an endeavor they are very proud of.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We only had iMovie on one iPad and were only able to edit and take video one at a time. We were able to project the movie to the Intelliboard so we could collaborate on the editing.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The students take great pride in what they submit each year to the CyberFair. They enjoy telling their friends and family and love unveiling their creation to the entire school.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The students learned how to use iMovie and take photos and video with an iPad. They learned basic editing techniques. They were the writers, directors and producers of their own video story.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Students used smart phones, iPads, iMovie and an Intelliboard to complete their project. They relied on their own personal accounts and interviews to tell their story. The iPad they used was the most valuable tool in creating their project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Students are proud of the work they put into their CyberFair project. They promote their project to their friends, family and other teachers every chance they get. The students also show their project at the school's Showcase of Learning and a Celebration of Technology in Education.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The project has helped advertise the students eatery to people on and off campus. Our video will help develop a better understanding of our students and their capabilities.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The students were the best helper they had. They paired with each other to create their project and gave each other support.
