Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The location of the National Taichung First Senior High School(Yi-Zhong District)is situated in the northern part of Taichung. Many students gather here because this area includes prestigious schools such as the National Taichung University of Science and Technology, National Taichung First Senior High School, and National University of Physical Education and Sports. It gradually formed the biggest student shopping district. What is more, Yi-Zhong District has been selected as one of the top ten spots which attract the most foreigners and tourists by Taichung Tourism Bureau. Recently, many cram schools are located in the Leader Building of Taichung Irrigration Association. Therefore, a great number of students flock here to obtain knowledge after class. The feature of “no discount, no buying” has been stimulating consumers to shop here, and reinforcing the power of prosperity. Without a doubt, Yi-Zhong District is a suitable place for student groups. The New World Shopping Center nearby also draws people’s attention, and has gradually enlarged Yi-Zhong District, attracting more and more people to visit it.

2. Summary of Our Project

Having cheap goods and countless students heading to cram school, Yi-Zhongstreet became the most bustling shopping district in Taichung. However, with such a diversity of people and vehicles, the dangerous scene of people and vehicles scrambling for the road happens frequently, not to mention the horrible air quality. Therefore, we hope to discuss and come to a solution to the problems of Yi-Zhong street by means of this monographic study. Also, to reach our goal, we hope to enhance the safety of pedestrians by originating social movements.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

?Interpersonal aspects: There are times of communication between team members. We work together to share work loading, release news, and interview many people. Surely, we went through some conflicts. Fortunately, we reconcile finally and understand each other and ourselves more. We cooperate again as a real team! ?Information: The search for information is based on network. We also examine whether the information we found on the Net is reliable. We usually consult professionals to make our information as accurate as possible. ?Web productions: In the production of the Website, we divided it into three parts, including the text, the design and last but not least, the integration part. Because it is assigned to different members, everyone must first understand the concept of the student who constructed the Web, and then complete each section assigned.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

'Project-based web production,' is a whole new challenge for high school students, but we are proud to devote our time to bettering our hometown. Although we also need to sacrifice a lot of time of studying textbook, the precious experience teaches us a lot of knowledge, communication skills, and attitude towards life in which we can never learn from at school. Though during the process, we have had quarrels, disagreements, unequal allocation of time and other issues, after we conquered them, we discovered that what we are doing now is actually a 17-year-old rite of passage. Unregrettably, we showed our passion to our hometown - -Yi-Zhong shopping district.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The main learning objective of the field of the local environmental issues is to urge some positive changes and to get familiar with our environment by means of observing and even putting our ideal into action. We chose to better the Yi-Zhong Sopping District which we often visit as our main topic. While we were working on our subject, we weren’t only doing researches but also taking real action at the same time. We launched the social movement of “Change Yi-Zhong Street. We can make it,” hoping to arouse the public awareness of the problems in the community. If possible, we long to achieve the final goal of providing the pedestrians in Yi-Zhong Sopping Districtwith safe and comfortable shopping surroundings.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Computers/Laptops Recorder(cellphone?mp3) Digital camera Flash drive Optical network and ADSL broadband global area network Mobile phone Printer Hard drive Window XP?Window Vista? Window 8 Microsoft Office Window 2007 Microsoft Office Excel 2007 Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 Adobe Dreamweaver CS5&5.5&6 Photo Impact X3?11 Dropbox Facebook painter

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

While processing our research, the most critical job for us is to get the public to know the purpose of our project. Therefore, we initially interviewed the vendors and residents there so as to design the questionnaires and hand out them on the streets and even on the internet. By doing so, we get to know more about most people’s opinions on whether Yi-Zhong Street needs to be changed. We also had a discussion with the student committee oftheNational Taichung First Senior High School and introduced our ideal and goal to the local neighborhood magistrate. After a few thorough interviews and discussions, our team realized the orientation of our action more precisely and then arranged it into paper documents. Thus, we hope our goalof “Change Yi-Zhong Street. We can make it” can be noticed by other cities and even by foreign countries. To achieve our goal, we decided to convey our thoughts through our website and even translate it into English versions to let the world know that we, a group of high school students, are striving for the environment of our home!

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The activity of“Change Yi-Zhong Street. We can make it” makes usrealize the hardships of running a social movement. During the process, all of us meet some obstacles that most high school students won’t ever be faced up. However, the process of doing these researches not only highly boosts our abilities of dealing withpeople and things, but also improvesour logic reasoning and the ability of search for information.Last but not least, it is truly a priceless experience for all of us.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

In order to make our project possible to carry out, we gained precious opinions and suggestions from the local vendors and even passersby at Yi-Zhong Street by visiting and interviewing them repeatedly. There are also some people who were familiar with the local community and were pleasant to give us a hand, such as the student committee of the National Taichung First Senior High School and the local neighborhood magistrate, broadening our horizon.Speaking of our petition, there are totally twenty six student committees from 26 high schools helpedhand our petition out. Eventually, 25666 people sign up to support the project. In addition, amounts of people speak out their opinions and questionson our web for fans. In this way, we got to know more about people’s opinion and doubts toward us.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

The words of the students from our sister school made us aware that the shopping district we like to frequent has already become a place full of air pollution and garbage. In spite of the fact that most people think itimpossible for us to change the shopping area, we still dare to give it a try.We gradually learned a lot to deal with our emotions and stress. Since we all have schoolwork to do, we must make a great management between our program and studies. We have to learn the lesson of making good use of time. We sometimes had arguments because the distribution of work wasn’t fair or the assignments weren’t finished on time. However, we always reached reconciliation by having meetings and communicating with each otherrationally. These experiences made us learn that it takes not only a good team work but also rational communications with each other to accomplish something. We started up the project with our enthusiasm and passion at the beginning. It had never occurred to us that we could make these achievements and gain so much supports from people. Therefore, we shall keep striving and move forward to our goal in the future.
