Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Baguio, also known as the “Summer Capital of the Philippines,” is a haven and is an epitome of beauty of both man-made and natural. In addition to this, this mountainous place hidden behind the mist stands out for its profound magnificence, wherein people can interact, relax and enjoy their lives as to how life is supposed to be.

Although cold and breezy, the city welcomes its tourists with warmth and hospitality. They serve as the salts, sugar and other spices that have made the city a tasty and enjoyable experience itself that quenches your thirst for adventure and satisfies your appetite for fun-filled experiences.

Grab the pine cones, come to Baguio!

2. Summary of Our Project

Twenty-three years ago, a killer earthquake left the city of Baguio in a state of utter despair. However, this catastrophic incident did not hinder the city from rising up again, as it even garnered the title of “The Cleanest and Greenest City”, for the calendar years 1994, 1995, and 1996.

After decades of turning the blind eye on the conditions of the surroundings, the local government, supported by the citizens, finally took the time and funds to revive Baguio’s beauty--both modern and black and white, leading to an improved, developed and better Baguio which this project aims to showcase.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Various obstacles have hindered us in the process of finishing our tasks as a group and as individuals like selecting a topic, time management, division of focus, lack of participation, and language barrier.

There were many options to choose from which caused disagreements among the members for we cannot easily decide on one choice since each person’s idea had to be considered before arriving at a final decision. Democracy was implemented to address this problem where the rule of majority was followed.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

This project has opened our eyes on history and its old-fashioned ways of showcasing classic and vintage magnificence; hence, making us appreciate the ethereal of Baguio City despite how much destruction it has endured over time. Through this project, we hope to encourage more tourists to come and experience the iridescent atmosphere Baguio possesses.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

As a team, we have been blatantly affected in making this project as it is a pity that we are strangers in our own city. Through this project, we were able to overcome our being foreigners to our own home, developed to work as a class, and apply what we learned in school--from the basic steps of researching to the tedious process of consolidating the results to the final website construction; thus, becoming a proud citizen of the city. We are inspired to be progressive and to enhance our talents and skills as proud Louisians. This project serves as an inspiration for the whole class to reach our goals with the help of the virtues we may obtain like patience, confidence, team work and social involvement.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

For the completion of our project, the following information tools have been used: • Hardwares: laptops, mobile phones, data storage, cameras, and the like • Peopleware • Software: Wix, MS Office

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We negotiated with people as Louisians and as stewards of this city and with this; we served not only as ambassadors, but also as promoters in a way that we would like to showcase what our city has. As spokespersons and ambassadors, we shout out the natural wonders of our city, incorporate the topics of our wonderful city in our conversations with our friends, families, and other relatives, we suggest that they visit our site which is filled with details of our wondrous homeland. We are the voice of the beauty of our surroundings and we came for a mission; that is to offer all the beauty and magnificence that is Baguio.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Tourism is the main source of income here in Baguio. Through this project we aim to boost the number of tourists that visit Baguio. By sharing to the world how Baguio is both a natural and man-made beauty, we can be a catalyst for the change in Baguio’s tourism. This project can open several doors and opportunities for Baguio to climb the economic ladder that Baguio was once at the top of.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

A lot of people have lent us their hands during the making of this project. Both residents and tourists on the sites willingly endowed us with their knowledge about the different tourist attractions all over the city of Baguio. They have bestowed everything they know about the history, current situation, and the changes done to the different tourist spots along with their reactions to the ongoing improvements.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

This project has affected us all in ways we have never imagined. By participating in this project actively, we were able to see Baguio in a very different perspective. All these years we were complacent in the fact that Baguio was there but that was it. We never tried to venture into a different perception of Baguio- a more urbanized and beautiful city. We were surprised at how much Baguio has grown all these years and at how much we were missing by being confined in the four white walls of our classrooms. Venturing out into the urban world that is Baguio was the first step in discovering a plethora of beautiful attractions. We unearthed a lot of hidden sceneries and we brought to life forgotten worlds. Because of all these discoveries, we learned that we must always give importance to OUR own city and all the places within its vicinity. This project taught us that we truly are lucky to have so much at the tip of our fingers and that we are the only people who have the power to preserve it and to improve it.
