Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Xinying Township is located in the southern Yuzhong County, in the mountains and hills north of Mayu Mountain. The landform of Xinying is in the shape of a piece of tile, with the southwest part higher and northeast lower. And the south part of it is rocky alpine region with an altitude of 2,225-3,475 meters, is the second darkest area in southern mountains. And the center part is the semi-arid region, the altitude of which is 2,076 meters to 2,225 meters. With a total coverage of 142 square kilometers, Xinying is consisted of 13 administrative villages with 101 villagers group, amounting to a total of 4,653 household and 20,630 people. The population density is nearly 141 people per square kilometers, making Xinying one of the biggest townships of Yuzhong County. In Spring Festival, the traditional Shehuo activities are held to bring elations to Xinying.

2. Summary of Our Project

Based on the Shehuo in our hometown, this activity could firstly train our affection on our own hometown. In our knowledge, we thought there were only mountains in the hometown, without anything else that could be proud of. However, this activity proved that we were wrong, for we learnt that there were so many “wealth” in our hometown. On the other hand, this activity brought us powerful shock that the excellent folk culture was extinguishing day by day, and the young generation of us learnt less and less about the traditional culture. Therefore, to pass on the folk culture is our unshakable responsibility.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:none

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

We once thought we were quite excellent in school. It was this activity that I realized that there were so many others things I need to study, for encountering the problems, such as ineffective communication with people, felt lost when we were in trouble in the interviews, regret on the failure to take the satisfactory photos, many problems on the computer and inadequate knowledge on the surrounding things. Thus we will take this activity as a starting point to comprehensively improve ourselves.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

(1) Inadequate cognition. (2) Not enough sincerity. (3) There were few experienced old people. (4) The time was too tight. (5) The information we got were quite little.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Based on the Shehuo in our hometown, this activity could firstly train our affection on our own hometown. In our knowledge, we thought there were only mountains in the hometown, without anything else that could be proud of. However, this activity proved that we were wrong, for we learnt that there were so many “wealth” in our hometown. On the other hand, this activity brought us powerful shock that the excellent folk culture was extinguishing day by day, and the young generation of us learnt less and less about the traditional culture. Therefore, to pass on the folk culture is our unshakable responsibility.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Hardware: computer, digital camera, mobile phone, U disk Software: Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Microsoft Word,Internet Explorer, ACDSee , CuteFtp ,QQ,FTP

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We were so proud that we could dig and sort out Shehuo, the ancient culture about our hometown and promote it. We hope more and more people can come to learn our hometown’s culture. We have visited numerous residents in our hometown to complete our works. In spite of the fact that the technologies are developing and improving, please do not forget our most original and ancient folk art.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

It is this research that helped us students to get to learn the ancient culture in our hometown. In fact, there are many new things near us that we can look into for which will fail to be learned in class. Besides, our confidence and personal abilities have been trained, and have learnt the team spirit. Meanwhile, we have grown stronger sense of affection and proudness on our hometown. So we hope more people can start to learn our hometown and work hard to beautify it into more dynamic.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We were surprised that many ardent people joint our research. Our interviews covered the people that were over 80, and even as young as teenagers who might have joint in the Shehuo for merely one year. Every one who knew something about the Shehuo would share all their knowledge with us. And our interviews have attracted many curious villagers’ high attention. Many people also provided us their own collection of photos and videos. In school, many schoolmates helped us to contact with the people for interview, and some even invited their own grandpas to school. It should be said that this research was completed by all of our Xinying People.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Through the whole research, we have learnt a lot of new things, some of which were even unknown to our parents. Without this research, many valuable legends and customs might be lost. So we should learn to protect the cultural heritage nearby. In the research, we have encountered the difficulty in team work. As the problems occurred, we felt lost and it was after we worked together and solve the problems did we know how incredible the teamwork, unity and trust were.
