Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Dadaocheng is not only a wharf initiating the flourishing development of Taipei, but also a crucial wharf followed by Monga. The rise of Dihua Street is closely related to the development of Dadaocheng. In Dadaocheng, the most diversified and bustling street is Dihua Street on which professional stores and different historical building are located. Because many professional markets gather on the street, Dihua Street can be viewed as a center which expands into a business area. This business area is the place studied in this project.

2. Summary of Our Project

We live in the metropolitan of Taiwan—Taipei City, surrounded with the skyscraper and high buildings everywhere making people like living in a jungle.Ofcourse the city is decorated and flooded with the sparkling neon light in the night. Go back to the Taiwan history, the southern areas of Taiwan was developed earlier than which of the northern, however, Taipei is on the chosen teeming cities list in Asia as from now. The prosperous and progressive status is fully attributed to an old city set up in the seventeenth century—Da Dao Cheng. The name was derived from its original function as a place using for drying the unhusked rice under the sun. In Taipei city, the first developed harbourfor trade was Mong Jia, thereafter Da Dao Cheng was developed and played a key role of promoting Taipei to the top. With the years gone, the varieties in cultural living is the significant characteristic of the current Da Dao Cheng. And among which, Di Hwa Trade Area will be the most prosperious area in Da Dao Cheng, and is consisting of many specialized business, such as clothing vendors, tea stores, general cargos…etc.Even many historic buildings still stand around the area.It might be called a living history of Taipei. This is the reason why we decide to select it as our researching topic. Our main points are on the items of history,, ancient architecture, commercial firms transportand suggested itinery. Despite that a plenty of available information about Di Hhwa Street can be easily derived from the magaziness, newspaper and government publishings, we use the way of spot interview in order to get a feeling of the realistic screen like the people living there.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:1

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

For the Cyberfair project, we mostly used our home computers and the Internet for production and discussion. Occasionally we used the school network, 1G bps Internet speed, but it was mainly for uploading the webpages.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

For producing the website, we encountered many difficulties, from choosing the theme in the beginning, planning the schedule, collecting and integrating data, to applying the computer technologies. However, we learned a lot through the project. Besides the techniques of creating webpages, we learned how to do project research, which includes querying, filtering information, making surveys, communicating with merchants, integrating the entire research data, and systemizing the integrated results. Certainly, teamwork is a big challenge, but it is a great way to make the project complete. Through teamwork, we each contribute one’s expertise; everyone is responsible and alert towards assignments, so without any delay, we could easily finish the project.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Through the project of Dihua Street, we discovered a lot of beautiful scenery that we never noticed.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The theme of this project is Dadaocheng. Dadaocheng itself is the important indicator initiating the prosperity of Taiwan. This project can be associated with the important course in the 2nd semester of grade 7 and that in the 1st semester of grade 1 in senior high school. During this project, the project team probed into the theme from the perspective of students, and described the details of this project in a more fundamental and simpler way. This project also probed into the local tourism information. It is believed that after the completion of this project, the information and data collected in this project can be applied to the teaching of courses about Taiwan under Qing Dynasty rule to enable teachers to arouse the interest and curiosity of students. After all, school courses should not simply be composed of dull text. School courses should transform students into knowledge explorers, rather than knowledge recipients only. The interactive teaching of website exactly possesses this function. During this project, the project team did a lot what they had heard and had never done before. The project team heard about the compilation of questionnaire in geography class before. However, they had never personally compiled any questionnaire. During this project, the team compiled the questionnaire and recalled what the teacher had said during the class: The questions of the questionnaire should be explicit and should not be subjective. It is preferable to provide 3-5 options for each question. After actually compiling the questionnaires, the project team remembered well these important details.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We always visited the interviewees for initial contact. After the interviews, they always left us their email addresses and earnestly told us that we could call them when we had questions. A storeowner even gave us his Facebook account, so we still have contact with him. He became a friend who brings different perspectives!

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Some stores and tourists were willing to be interviewed by us. Since Dihua Street used to be a cultural center in the old days, there are many local visitor guides.
