Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taipei City, the capital city in Taiwan, is a prosperous, crowded city .With convenient transportation, shops, malls, department stores and plenty of job opportunities. Taipei has always attracted lots of people to work and visit. Hence, it is also a city full of art activities. There are many galleries, museums and concert halls. Recently, there are more and more street performances going on, which we are deeply attracted to.

2. Summary of Our Project

People come and go without stopping. They are so close when jammed in the MRT, yet they don’t have anything in common. Magically, the performances of buskers on the hallways can always slower people’s steps. Some even stop and watch. It is really important to have such a vivid way as busking to relieve people’s emotions. The artistic atmosphere is high in public space when they are around. Buskers mean a lot fo a city. For getting more understanding of busking, we not only had many interviews with wonderful buskers, but also applied for the audition for the Busking Permit. With the anticipation that maybe one day we could also be buskers, we decided to choose the buskers as our topic.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

At first, we were so unfamiliar with interviewing people. We were so nervous that we couldn’t find a good way to lead them to tell us more. Later, we found a way to conquer this awkward situation: we practiced with each other before we formally interviewed the buskers, Gradually, we conquered the nervousness and could get more inner thoughts from our interviewees.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

“Pursuit your dream and never give up!” When we were doing this project, we confronted a lot of problems. Somehow we doubted ourselves: could we really finish this? Was this beyond our abilities? Thanks to the encouragement of the teachers and the buskers, we went on this hard work without giving up. We do think this is the most important thing we have learned. We unite together and fight till the end.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

This research can be well-associated with the moral character education. Students can get some useful information about buskers, and find more facts about the specific art form in Taipei city. Some students may even find another possibility for their future career choice.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We used desktops, notbooks, digital cameras, USB flash drives, a printer, several telephones and cell phones, and related software. These tools helped us collect texts and pictures when we do the field trips and interviews. Computers are the most helpful tools for us because we can organize our thoughts and texts with them.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We were very shy when we first interviewed those buskers. However, we not only learned a lot from our interviews but also let the buskers know our school. They were all very impressed by our sincerity and willingness to learn. They taught us a lot of things, which even include the living wisdom and philosophy. They were also very happy to know that the project we were doing would promote their social image. Through our web pages and facebooks, we help deliver our knowledge about buskers and busking. We attended the audition of busking permit as well.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Doing the project helps us get more clear image of buskers. The precious street art perfomers deserve more respect and understanding. We do want to make our community a better place with various cultural events going on. Though we are just high school students, we can still use our web page to help people gain the related knowledge about buskers in Taipei. Practically, people who are interested in being buskers can follow our suggestions and information to complete their dreams. Some think the experience of attending the audition is very useful. They never had that information before.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Thanks to so many generous buskers who are willingly to be interviewed. They were all very patient and kind. They even encouraged us not to give up no matter what you do. Also, the teachers are always helpful during our whole process.
