Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Lanya Elementary School located between Shilin and Beitou disctricts in Taipei City. The back door of our school is next to Huang Xi River dike, if walk along the dike, you will be on Mingde bridge, after Mingde bridge is Beitou District. Our school is in Lanya neighborhood of Shilin District in Taipei City.“Lanya” means wet land in our dialect, as the name is based on geologic appearance, therefore many other places in Taiwan has more or less same name as “Lanya”.The geographical names along Huang Xi River bank showed there used to be lot of floods in past days. Although Ruan Qiao (soft bridge) located in Beitou Disctrict, most interviewee’s impressions about Beitou is the area near the hot springs, Ruan Qiao (soft bridge) was belonged to Shipai.

2. Summary of Our Project

Ruan Qiao represented not only a place name, but also a kind of history and educational meaning. As we studied the geographic range, we've learned how Taipei Basin was formed, how Taipei City was developed and the railway construction during colonization by Japanese due to the increasing of population. We've concluded geographic range of Ruan Qiao, transportation, related historical articles and so on. Now Taipei City government is making the third technology park in taipei. We Gogo Lion team had participated many events held by Fu Yu Temple and visited Ruan Qiao and took pictures and recorded of the constructions of Shilin Beitou Technology park.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The main problem we had was the time, although we love to do the interview and research, but most of our kids couldn't make time. So we decided to work on different things and file together. Shilin Beitou Technology park is an important government construction project, zone expropriation by government had caused the damage to the nature environment and subsidization for the farmers is not satisfied settled yet. We tried our best to collect the media information and recorded the past and present situation to show the real face of Ruan Qiao in Jien Ming Neighborhood.

As the construction is in the process, the performing stage was torn down less than 2 days after the ground ceremony, and the dragon pillars of Fu Yu Temple will be moved to new temple after Lantern Festival (Feb. 2013). Many things happened in short time, that we are afraid that we couldn't catch the changes and wanted to update the latest situation in our website.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We really appreciate the school principal and teachers who help us to put together all the informations how Ruan Qiao greenery become a technology park. Although it was hard to do this job, but we know it will be a great memory for most of our members. And we are going to miss most of the members who will be graduated this year.

After learning we are doing research of Ruan Qiao, our principal always walk along the river bank. We witnessed the changes of Ruan Qiao. Once we had a field trip in Ruan Qiao with schoold principal and director during winter break. We've learned a lot of ecological knowledge from them. We had so much fun together. We've found bugs, Brown Shrike and White Wagtail (these birds are very rare now). It's sad that the cost of economical growth is to sacrifice our nature. We walked along Huang Xi river and it was really beautiful.
