Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Iligan City is our locality that is positioned in the Northern part of Mindanao that is to be found in the Philippines. Iligan City is known as “City of Waterfalls” Iligan falls within the third type of climate wherein the seasons are not very pronounced. Rain is more or less evenly distributed throughout the year. Because of its tropical location the city does not experience cold weather. Neither does it experience strong weather disturbances due to its geographical location (being outside the typhoon belt) And also because of the mountains that are surrounding the city. Particularly in this city can be find a river named Mandulog. We have chosen our covered area to be Mandulog because this river is primarily the casualty of the typhoon Washi that bring-about thousand of the lives of Iliganon. Our school, “Iligan City East High School” is located at the eastern part of Iligan City. Our school is composed of thousands of students and more than 60 faculty members.

2. Summary of Our Project

Biodiversity refers to all life forms- plants, animals and ecosystem. It defines the variability among living organisms from all sources including terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems of which they are a part; this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems. This project shows the diversity of flora in Ma8indulog River within the buffer zone after the typhoon Washi which was being flashed flooded and eager to determine the different species which was being diversified. It also describes the physical and biological characteristics of Mandulog River, to determine the physic-chemical parameters of the buffer zone of Mandulog River, accounting and characterizing the perennial plants growing in the buffer zone of Mandulog River in terms of the community type, root structure, and estimating the relative abundance of the dominant perennial plants in every site under consideration. This information can be the basis of sustaining the growth performance of these plants and can serve as a stepping board to do appropriate actions in the conservation and rehabilitation of these resources.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Despite of lack of resources available, wehave tried our very best to comply all requirements to finish this output. Nowadays, lack of knowledge about reassuring plant species in our community is the common malady in almost each individual. In establishing this website, together with nurturing aspiration for genuine source of information about perennial plants that will be the way in sustaining the growth enhancement and to do suitable actions in terms of conserving and rehabilitating these kinds of species.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

This project is entitled “Students' Assessment on Vicissitudinous Environment (SAVE)” portrays a great significance in terms of providing appropriate information that can be a genuine source to sustain growth performance and serves in the conservation of these resources to the students, school and even to the community.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The content standards in this study falls on Health and Environmental Awareness category within this year’s CyberFair. Various rules and projects are already implemented in our locality which is known to be the only Green City in the Philippines, namely: Mangrove Tree Planting, Clean and Green Campaign. The vision of a sanitary environment in Iligan City aspires people most particularly students from various schools. Our alma mater, Iligan City East High School actively participates any kind of enrichment activities for the students as well as the teachers. We have developed among ourselves the significance of joint effort as a team to achieve our pertaining objective. We take actions not only awareness and concern among citizens inside the community.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We used tools that greatly help in terms of consuming energy, time and effort. Specifically, using computers and laptops had of great significance in browsing the internet, editing and retouching purposes for this activity. Using digital camera in taking and uploading photos that are provides reliable information. Computer softwares and applications to its great extent have contributed to the completion of this project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We act as ambassadors through representing our school and even our country. Through participating in this kind of activity, we approach various personalities that really contribute through their unceasing help.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

This study has its great importance in terms of lending residents enough based-line information in a place particularly in the buffer zone of Mandulog River. This can be a great help in terms propagating kinds of plants particularly plants that has great potential. This can be a genuine establishment of helping our locality in our own unique and realistic manner. This research bought an impact in the relationship between our locality and also among students and teachers.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

It is not a hindrance based on one’s economic status. As a part of concern citizens in our locality, importance of implementing your actions will have a great part and significance in our community. As a completion in making this project, various personalities have been a great help in terms of lending important advices.
