Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Liancheng Chieftain Lu Yamen, located in sixty-five kilometers southwest of Yongdeng County, Guansu Province, is a well-preserved palatial ancient architectural complex at Guansu-Qinghai border. The former site of Chieftain Lu Yamen is the fourth batch of national key cultural relics protection units. Chieftain Lu Yamen consists of government office, garden, and Miao Temple. Yamen is the government office of chieftain and the living space of his family dependents. It is southern exposure, has several courtyards with strong national style, covers an area of more than 13500 square meters, and has 226 rooms, and is a building area of 5397 square meters. On the axis, the main buildings are screen wall, honorific arch, main entrance gate, Yimen, hall, Yanxi Hall, and ancestral hall, and the surrounding rooms. 2. Summary of Our Project

Through the students' inquiry, hands-on process, we solve the specific problems in real life by using the existing knowledge and experience, learn to learn, develop the humanistic spirit and scientific literacy. In the process of making web page, our knowledge is increased, and we master certain basic skills about information technology. Our spare time is limit, and the transportation is not very convenient. The Chieftain Lu Yamen, County Museum, Archives, and Hongcheng Gratitude Temple is dozens of kilometers from our college, the nearest is more than 30 kilometers, and the furthest Hongcheng Gratitude Temple is about 70 kilometers. So a lot of material can not collect, which is regretful. Time is flying. We have done the work for a month. During this time, all of us are busy and tired. We are glad to receive the positive result. I think we should cherish the work. Every one is good and competent. I hope that every one could enjoy the joy of success. I hope that the web page design competition may be our motion. As long as you work hard, you will be rewarded. As you sow, so shall you reap. In the future, no mater what we are for, we should work together. And from now on, we do be a good people.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Because we participate in this kind of game for the first time, we are lack of experience, and are all new, experience, and the computer application technology is low, we have great difficulty in webpage making. In addition, the lesson and activity clash. Fortunately, we can make an appointment with the interviewer, which greatly reduces the time. We have unexpected difficulties in collecting material and making web pages. At first we search on internet. In order to collect more original material, we decided to do interview and take photograph. Road repairing contributes to heavy traffic. It takes a long time on the way to interview. Unexpectedly, Chieftain Lu Yamen does not get good protection, and a lot of precious cultural relics have suffered serious damage. Parts of the cultural relics and frescoes are incomplete. Although we got some material, the history can not be presented and is getting more and more far away from us. When gathering material, due to various reasons we cannot access the precious cultural relics. We have to turn to County United Front Work Department for help. Minister Li negotiates with them, and we collect some source, precious material.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Through participating in this activity, we feel rich historical atmosphere and profound cultural connotation of Chieftain Lu Yamen. In the process, we learned to exploration, question, cooperation, and innovation. It trains our practice ability, and improves our practical ability and capability of comprehensively using knowledge. Our computer application skill is also improved. In China, there are a lot of very good historical sites. In this activity, we find that they are not well protected and developed. And we have an obligation to propagate ancient cultural history, protect the extraordinary historical building, and carry forward precious cultural heritage of Chinese Tibetan Buddhism. Now Chieftain Lu Yamen gets protection, and a lot of scenic spots are also being repaired. It gives us more opportunities to learn the historical culture of the motherland.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Based on the introduction of cultural deposits of Chieftain Lu Yamen, the thesis shows precious historical and cultural heritage in hometown. Under the background of the new curriculum reform, the activity launches, which is significant, as it can be brought into our practical teaching and learning as local curriculum. In practical operation, the members had learning experiences that they never had before with great enthusiasm. They first applied their knowledge to real life. Especially 3 students learned the skills about integrated solution technology in the process of making web page about Chieftain Lu Yamen. Although the result is not perfect, they understand that as you sow, so shall you reap. At the same time, they encouraged and communicated each other in the webpage making and interview, which enhanced their friendship and let them learn about team spirit.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We formed a project research team, and conducted propaganda about historical sites and the long history and culture in hometown as promotional ambassador. We collected material through expert interview and visitation. As we did not know the regulation, we had to turn to the department concerned for help under the guidance of instructor. After supplementing the relevant approval material, we went to collect data once again. I hope to take advantage of the web page design competition to propagate the culture of Chieftain Lu Yamen and develop the local tourism based on our practice, investigation, and study. The thesis presents the historical and cultural characteristics, architectural style, pluralism of culture, religious heritage, and social benefits and tourism value of Chieftain Lu Yamen. In our common effort, web page design competition promoted the propaganda of Chieftain Lu Yamen, improved its tourism value, and effectively promoted the good folk culture heritage, so that the local tourism develops fast, steadily, and fruitfully.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Web page design competition made us have a new understanding about around historic sites, as well as a wave of protecting historical and cultural heritage swept the campus. When interviewing, taking photograph, and collecting material, they understood the chieftain culture, and the Buddha's scripture and Chinese Tibetan Buddhism in Chieftain Lu Yamen culture. We hope to take advantage of the web page deign competition to propagate historical sites and a long history and culture in our hometown. In the process of practice, investigation, exploration process, we introduced the culture of Chieftain Lu Yamen to the outside world to develop the local tourism. The development of tourism about Chieftain Lu Yamen undoubtedly promotes the local economy. And rich Sino-Tibetan buddhist culture atmosphere will attract more tourists.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

In the event, because our spare time is less, and Chieftain Lu Yamen, Yongdeng County Museum, and archives is more than 30 kilometers from our college, the school gave us a lot of help, especially the support of incumbent president Wang Zhengqing, and our teachers also provide convenience for us, and give us special favor. With the help of Yongdeng County United Front Work Department and Taiwan Affairs Office, we received the warm reception of Chieftain Lu Yamen Museum Curator Jia and the Director Ge of Administrative Committee. Director Ge put down his work and personally guided us, and interpreted in detail the history about Chieftain Lu Yamen. And the Director Li of Archives and Hongcheng Gratitude Temple Administrative Committee also gave us free assistance, especially the Director Li of Archives, who left the relative who has just received operation, gave us substantial support, and be free of charge.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

As Lu Chieftain government was not well protected before, a lot of precious relics has been destroyed seriously, parts of cultural relics and frescoes is incomplete. As the enhancement of cultural relics protection consciousness, the local government is stepping up efforts to protect, adhere to the overall protection, and repair old as before. If the residents want to rebuild housing, they need first to apply to the Administrative Committee, and rebuild according to government’s plan. The experience is very helpful for us. We not only understand the profound culture of Chieftain, but also learn about how to communicate with others. The happiest is that we comprehensively use the existing knowledge to solve the specific problems in real life by independent inquiry and hands-on process, learn to learn, develop the humanistic spirit and scientific literacy. We also understand a truth: all things are not smooth, like magnificent Chieftain Lu Yamen, it is after generations of Chieftains’ strenuous efforts. So no mater what we do, we should be down-to-earth. We firmly believe that: as long as you work hard, you will certainly be harvested.
