Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Hsichou Township is located in the southernmost area of Changhua County, and between East Luo River and West Luo River. It was named Hsichou because it is the sandbar of a river. Hsichou Township, on the low-lying alluvial fan of Jhuoshuei River, is the third largest town in Changhua County. From its south, across Jhuoshuei River, is Yunlin County. In the early stage, Hsichou Sugar Factory used to be an important sugar refinery in Taiwan. During the Japanese occupancy, Cizi Canal, the first official Taiwanese canal and the second largest irrigation system of Changhua County, was manually dug to obtain water from Jhuoshuei River and to irrigate the entire southwest region of Changhua. Because of the fertile black soil on the riverbank of Jhuoshuei River, a variety of crops are produced, including the widely famous Jhuoshuei rice, Pearl guavas, and Malabar chestnuts. With rich soil and water, the people of Hsichou Township work hard to produce plenty of high-quality agricultural products.

2. Summary of Our Project

From participating in the street parade of the school, to understanding the entirety of the cultural activity season, we have interviewed some local primary schools, middle schools, colleges, and other groups. We found that many people in this area love Hsichou dearly and have quietly devoted many efforts to it, which encourages us to promote the event even more. Through a questionnaire, we can listen to people’s perspectives of the local arts; besides, we can provide the survey outcome to the township hall. We hope that next year, the features of local arts will be more prominent in the culture activity season, and people of different ages will participate in the event. Hopefully, the beauty of Hsichou will be well known among people in other places!

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1. The teacher has asked our team member Chung-chuan Chen to rewrite his interview report several times. Even in the practice of taking pictures, being a photographer, he still tried to be a part of pictures. With the teacher’s guidance, he finally could take good pictures and completed his interview report. 2. Most of us could not catch the main point when practicing for interviews. After repeated practice with on-campus teachers and long-term training, we were able to quickly catch the points in interviews. We did not have stage fright, nor did we have irrelevant questions. 3. In the beginning, we didn’t know what to do. Teacher Wan-ping Wu, of the township hall, helped contact the mayor of Hsichou Township and Teacher Liang-yi Chang, so that we could complete the interviews. We thank Teacher Wan-ping Wu for the big help! 4. When learning Dreamweaver, we encountered a bunch of programming codes and new functions that we did not understand. We practiced very hard during lunch breaks and on holidays. We are able to work with Dreamweaver now. 5. Our time was very tight. The members responsible for webpage production had other duties in the computer club. The computer teacher was too busy, so we asked another teacher, Teacher Ming-hua Lin, to assist us. These happenings almost prevented us from completing the project in time, so we worked during the winter break to catch up with the schedule. We thank Teacher Ming-hua Lin and Teacher Chun-hung Chen for instructing us.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

“Hsichou Street Parade” and “Standing in the Central Field Photography Exhibition” are rich art feasts. They cultivate our soul and strengthen our identity to the traditional culture of our hometown through the fields of arts and humanities. After participating in learning, we have deeply experienced the aesthetics of the culture. The township hall promoted the community culture with featured events, and the town people made great efforts to grow together; it is the best demonstration of a moral education. In the project, we followed the teachers’ instructions and teamed up with schoolmates. Starting from nothing, we have grown and learned to collect, classify, and conclude data. In the process, we made contact with people concerned about the activities of their hometown, and understood the importance of the dedication of community service. We understand the service and teamwork that the comprehensive activity courses have taught us.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

With the Internet and computer technologies, we have completed various assignments efficiently. We have enhanced our capabilities of word processing, image editing, and questionnaire design with software, which can be combined with school courses. One event gives us lots of experience with computer technologies. For first grade Social Studies, “Personal and Social Life” of the Citizenship course, we were introduced to community development and lifelong learning. Through the Cyberfair project, we learned about environmental culture, and strengthened our sense of identity within our community. Through the streets and places we have visited, we understand the significance of environmental protection. Indirectly, we have also built the important concept of sustainable green homes. Starting from nothing, we learned to collect, classify, and conclude data. In the process, we made contact with people concerned about the activities of our hometown, and understood the importance of the dedication of community service. We understand the service and teamwork that the comprehensive activity courses have taught us.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

1.Digital camera, Cell phone:Take photos, Record sound 2.Laptop computer, Desktop computer:Create webpages,Upload photos,Create an image 3.Software (Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Google Search, Internet Explorer, Facebook, Meitu XiuXiu):Use Dreamweaver to produce webpages,Use Photoshop to edit images and banner animation pictures,Use Google sites for statistics, traditional paper questionnaires, and search,Use Internet Explorer for search,Use Facebook to upload images and reports 4.My computer, Internet, Flash drive:Store relevant data and links,Modify files With the Internet and computer technologies, we have completed various assignments efficiently. We have enhanced our capabilities of word processing, image editing, and questionnaire design with software, which can be combined with school courses. One event gives us lots of experience with computer technologies.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

1.After being a reporter for the entire day. I felt totally exhausted. We still showed people our best attitude, and enjoyed being a part of this. We did not forget our teacher’s reminders about politeness. In every interview, we politely asked people to accept our interview, and thanked them for their cooperation. We also remembered to give each team our best wishes. After participating in this activity, we learned that there are so many ways to express our love for the Hsichou Township. These impress on our feelings deeply.

2.The Oxcart Movie Theater is designed to imitate the theater of the past. Since technology was not well developed back then, people invited each other to come out to watch the movies together. I feel it’s very nice to have an activity like this. It helps villagers to connect each other so that it will not be too boring to live in this community. Also, people will get to know more people through this activity, and will not stay at home watching television and playing with the computer for a long time.

3.There are a group of lively moms who are dancing with no less passion than the other teams. The showiest one is a scarecrow on which there is a printing saying, “Hsichou needs water, water, and water”. This means Hsichou Township needs water from Jhuoshuei River in order to produce delicious and beautiful crops. If Central Taiwan Science Park grabs water from Jhuoshuei River, there will be problems of excessive water pumping. After interviewing these lively moms, we felt their passion deeply. We understood the meaning of Jhuoshuei River to Hsichou Township. I believe everyone who has seen the performance should understand the meaning of “Hsichou needs water, water, and more water.”

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Promote Hsichou Village Arts Village Art Street Parade is one of the Hsichou Cultural Festival activities. Everybody agrees that since we decided to do this, we should do the best we can. We start to look into all activities in Hsichou Cultural Festival including questionnaires for producing cultural season. This series of feedbacks from interviews show us people’s honest thinking. We hope people will understand our results, and come to visit this beautiful village, Hsichou, more. Also, we hope they will appreciate these special local arts, and introduce these to other people.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

1.Thanks to Liang-yi Chang. All members go to Lushun Road to visit the photograph exhibition of Teacher Liang-yi Chang. We discover that there is a deep moving story behind each photograph when we get there. Master expresses the farmers’ mood and feelings on their faces picturesquely. Farmers work hard, so even the dirt on their face shows their hard work. Each photograph shows us the meaning of real life that we have to pass through. Mr. Liang-yi Chang can always catch the focal point of the scenes. From different angles and using different techniques, he can easily shows us different styles. Our photography technique is so far away from Mr. Liang-yi Chang’s. The rice is the most representative crop, but is ordinary and does not grab people’s attention. Through his perfect technique, the photograph shows us the importance of rice to people’s life. Because of these types of work from Teacher Liang-yi Chang, all people learn that rice is the characteristic of our village. He is a good example of our learning. 2.Thanks to Hsichou mayor. we discover that everything the mayor has done was for Hsichou Township. He is not only worried about the river water problem, but also thinks about how to spread Hsichou culture around to everyone. I suddenly feel he is very great. The mayor always passionately participates in every activity in Hsichou. I can tell he loves Hsichou very much. In the interview, when I get lost on the topic, the principal pulled me back to the right direction so that I would not stray too far from the point. From this interview, we understand how the mayor has contributed to Hsichou. For the next generation, he has put in a lot of effort to protect this homeland. This is the spirit we should learn. 3. Thanks to Teacher Ming-hua Lin and Teacher Chun-hung Chen for teaching us to make webpages. 4. Thanks to Teacher Wan-ping Wu for finding teams for us to interview in the parade activity.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In the project, we proceeded with qualitative interviews and quantitative questionnaires. In the qualitative interviews, we understood the project through interaction with the interviewees. We learned ecology conservation from farmers’ viewpoints through the on-site interviews with Hsichou Township residents in their natural environment. In the parade, we interviewed many local groups, recorded the stories about their long-term service to the community, the idea about their developing rural life for the community, and the stories behind their water and soil protection. For the Fine Arts Hanhai, we scheduled face-to-face interviews with the township mayor, local gentries, and local artist. Through the interviews, we learned the specific work of community development that the local government promotes, and many people work very hard to contribute to the activities. Hsichou Township has lots of talented people. The artworks of the countryside scenes are very unique. The artists combine arts and environment, and blend the features of the community into their works. It is distinctly set apart from the artistic style of the city.
