Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Located to the west of Yuan-Lin railway, the nature environment of Nan-Ping Chateau’s early years were nothing but fields of green. The west side, the Ding Chateau, was occupied by villages of people mostly with the same last name of Yang. The east side, the Xia Chateau, was then occupied with people of five main last names: Feng, Chang, Huang, Lai and Lu. During the time when Japan was ruling Taiwan, people needed the spiritual stability. Due to the needs of the citizenry, the local gentries, used the nearby Jing-Hua Hall as the mother hall, built Xi-Shou Hall at the Chang’s in Xia Chateau, and offered their respect to Guan-Yin and Bao-Gong. The first hall manager was Mr. De-He Chang. Ju Chang, Shu Yang, Si-San Chang amd Ping Wu came afterwards and dedicated their efforts as managers. Ping Wu started the movement to build the temple. Through the donation of property and money from the devotees, the temple was built at Ding Chateau in Nan-Ping Village in 1965, and was named as San-Sen Temple. The management committee was formed in 1970, when population massively grew due to land readjustment and the development of Ju-Guang Rd. Due to the population growth, Ding Chateau of Nan-Ping Village became Nan-Xing Village, which can be translated as “the newly formed village in Nan-Ping”. The narrow and long landform is located to the west of Da-Cun Canal in Xing-Sheng Village and the east of Shuang-Xia Canal. To the north is the Da-Pu Village that connects to Da-Cun Village, and to the west is the Yuan-Tan Village. Yang was the most common last name, as You and Huang came in second and third. It remained an agriculture village with San-Sen Temple as the major temple that spiritually calmed the residents.

2. Summary of Our Project

The designated topic is “A pilgrimage to San-Sen Temple”. The content includes the beginning and the history of San-Sen Temple, as well as the significance of every God within the temple. Research on the construction technique Jian-Nian (Cut and Paste) is also included. Moreover, the research team will also share their knowledge with the students. Through this format of introduction, not only can we help the local people, even the whole world, to understand how important San-Sen Temple is to Yuan-Lin Township, but also can we help the students to realize their mission to preserve traditional culture. The aims of the research are as followed: 1.The history of San-Sen Temple 2.Interviewing the local grand old men 3.Research on the architectural characteristics of San-Sen Temple 4.For the students to experience the construction technique Jian-Nian 5.Bring what they learn to school environment

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

There are two network connections from the school. One is ADSL with 100M (15:1) that connects to TANET, and the other one is ADSL with 20M/4M that connects to HINET. Every office, specialized classroom and regular classroom are equipped with internet connection. We hope to achieve a “internet-able” purpose for every classroom. The setting up of web server, mail server and FTP server enables teachers and students to exercise their needs in the aspect of teaching and learning.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The biggest obstacle we ran into during our research was probably the under-construction of San-Sen Temple. Many cultural or historical relics were temporarily taken off or covered. We were not able to take any pictures. Moreover, the construction unit did not want us to make a visit due to safety issues on construction site. We were allowed to visit the safer areas after the teachers, the committee and the construction unit communicated and reached an agreement. However, the gathered data were not enough. After negotiation, the construction unit finally agreed for the teachers to enter the main lobby, the back lobby and the second floor for picture taking.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

San-Sen Temple committee was formed in 1970, when population massively grew due to land readjustment and the development of Ju-Guang Rd.
