Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our local community is Shilin District and it is located on northern Taipei City of Taiwan. Shilin District is a commercial and residential based area, whereas the Shilin Night Market next to the Taipei MRT Jiantan Station is one of the most famous tourism night markets in Taiwan. The crowds of the night market are drawing particularly many commercial events. Our research is conducted on a special group of aunties working with threading on Wenlin Road in Shilin District.

2. Summary of Our Project

If you ask a passerby in Taipei of whether if they know an open threading street, they could tell you “Shilin.” There is a special open threading street on Wenlin Road, Shilin District of Taipei City. This group of people has gathered here since 20 years ago. We will study the reason of formation, stories on each auntie, threading technique, threading culture and the views held towards these aunties from nearby stores and the residents, in addition to studying the kind of special changes brought on the local area and how the culture of threading is passed on.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

In this technology developed era, computer or internet has become an indispensable object. A considerable amount of freeware is now available. We have applied a large number of freeware that substantially reduced the difficulties of installing software at home, while the free sites provided by Google allows us to complete the project in school or at home without worrying about file storage. The use of such application not only saves us considerable amount of time but also improves the utilization efficiency. It is also easy for teachers to correct our writing while the clear site provides timely information on who writes the paper and who modifies the paper with timely assistance. This is a good helper for a themed competition with multiple editors.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Since the teammates never studied website writing technique, we worried that we could not complete the website on time. The teachers strengthened our website production capability during lunch time and in Wednesday afternoon.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Although I sacrificed the lunch time and winter vacation for this CyberFair, it was all worthwhile because I have truly learned things you will not receive in school while attending the CyberFair. I wish to take this meaningful competition in the future.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our school vision aims to “provide happy learning through quality teaching at Jiantan,” in order to develop each students with strong state of physical and mental health as well as the moral practice of satisfaction and gratitude by automatically exploring life and becoming knowledge giant of creative thinking. We cooperated in designing issues by taking in-fiend visit to the threading aunties, peripheral stores, passersby, and teachers. The understanding to the threading work process, website design and composition for each activity summary after school…etc are all practical and useful methods in social class, natural and science technology courses, and moral course. Our summaries are all uploaded to the Google Sites so that the teacher could review at anytime for convenience and green purposes. This research integrates what we have learned in school and we are more confident in conducting future project research.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

http://librarywork.taiwanschoolnet.org/gsh2013/gsh7502/narrative.htm

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The threading auntie was the main character in our interview. We sent her personalized card in expression of our gratitude during our first visit to them. We appreciated their time to accept the interview during free time. The aunties gave their business cards to use after the interview for future contact. The threading auntie even came to Jiantan Elementary School to help us experience threading process in person, giving us an unforgettable experience course. To interview other people with their views on threading, we encouraged ourselves to conduct interview with passersby on the street and the surrounding stores. Most of the people were friendly and were willing to spend time to answer our questions. Our survey was successfully completed and we could attempt things we never did before.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

More people found out about the origin and characteristics of threading via this project research in addition to understanding the work day of the threading auntie. The threading perception of facial cleanness and the interview conducted to understand the surrounding store, passersby and customer views towards threading, showed us that threading could attract different customers for consumption, driving local business. The Catholic Church is also friendly to the threading aunties by allowing them to take a rest there.

Our website is viewable by all Taiwanese and even the world. To help more people understanding threading and willing t experience threading so that the threading aunties could continue to work and extend the beautiful work of threading.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The threading auntie was the main character in our interview. We sent her personalized card in expression of our gratitude during our first visit to them. 5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Discoveries Once upon a time every time after petroleum jelly roll surface Street, we will not look at or think about what these people are doing, but this time visiting in person, let us find the aunt Lotte, contentment, lovely, and the hard side. Used to do a job you can enjoy it. Lessons People near the streets to visit the aunt impression really make those of us not having so much contact with a stranger who scared not knowing how to respond. Next time there is such an opportunity, we have to be more relaxed, allowing people to really feel the sincerity. Surprises Although pull is spreading so much skill, but people loved it but in this technological advances, increasing in modern societies, there are so many people every day to pull, trouble came from around this, weathered willing in this open environment, just to make myself beautiful, is an eye-opener for us.
