Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

We live in Honggu District, a remote administrative which is under the jurisdiction of Lanzhou City. There are Fangda Carbon Factory, Yaojie Coal Mine, Hai Shiwan Coal Mine, Hewan Coal Mine that severely disturb local residents’ life, and bring great challenge to their health. However, the government pursues economic development and totally ignores the environment protection and people's life, which impose immeasurable harm to our health.

2. Summary of Our Project

For this special topic, the focus of this activity is the column “A Research on Surrounding Environment'. We must pay attention to our health, and environmental protection depends on everybody. After an investigation, we find that factories and mines are “enemy” of our health; along with the “indifferent” habit are silent killers of the health of ourselves. People who live around the aluminum factory describe that their nostrils come into contact with dust from the aluminum factory everyday, and the exhausted gas makes them dizzy, pungent, and difficult to breath, as the exhausted gas from the factories contain fluoride, asphalt fume, etc. Part of the water drained from the carbon factory enters into the rivers and the industrial sewage contains mercury, nickel, aluminum, arsenic, etc., which are all carcinogenic roots.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1) The photographing process is arduous, and our interview is blocked. The factories and mines destroy the environment in order to gain profit, and we are obstructed during photographing. But we get the evidence that they destroy the environment through many ways, including candid camera. 2) Hard journey. We have to change several buses and trains, even walking. 3) Tight time. We have great pressure on learning general knowledge, and we have to make up lessons at weekends, so we merely have time to interview.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Although webpage making is simple, the process is arduous! Once there is an opportunity in the future, we shall not miss it. We believe that hard work will be rewarded. The central government concerns about the livelihood of the people all the time, but why it is difficult to be workable in regional areas? Could it be said that “One always worry about others’ trouble”? After an investigation on our hometown and the surrounding environment, we feel that the young students of our generation should study hard in order to try our best to make contribution to the construction of “Green home”. At last, we get a conclusion that “Health concerns about both us and others, and environmental protection needs our collective effort!”

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We never see that the surrounding environment is destroyed severely on the book, and similarly, the whole earth is destroyed ferociously. Remember: “We have only an earth”, and if she is “ill’, what does our health depends on? The new courses explicitly indicated that each high school graduate must take part in social practices and the credit is 6. We take this opportunity to develop our researching activity so that we fulfill our social practices and webpage making, just hitting two birds with one stone.During this process, we grasp a lot of knowledge that we cannot learned from the books, and understand many sources that resulting in environmental pollution. Also, we experience the forces of unity and cooperation, especially struggle against the factories and mines and remind them that we need green environment.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Telephone, Internet, Computer, Photoshop, Word, Digital camera, Pen and paper

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Being a journalist and a scientist. After a discussion of our team members with our classmates, we make a questionnaire about “Are you satisfied with your surrounding environment?” We give them out to the people along several streets and collect them back. And we enter the living quarters by ourselves to have a real experience and understanding of the necessity and urgency of environmental protection. We also suggest the local residents to establish self-protection consciousness and fight against the relative government departments.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We draw the attention of local residents: The consciousness “Everybody is responsible for environmental protection' is enhanced; Everybody’s health is closely related to the environment; Everybody who destroys the environment shall notice our deep hate to him; We should join up to confront with pollution and protect the environment and our health.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The local personnel fill in the questionnaire carefully, and tell us the “murderers' that destroy the environment.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Yellow River, the mother river of our Lanzhou people, the water contamination phenomenon The road is destroyed which will lead to life danger. We realized that “Knowledge changes fate', “To some extent, money will destroy life, even the earth'. Around the aluminum factory, the heavy metals contaminate the agricultural products, and our health is not protected.
