1. Description of Our Community

Situated in the northern part of Taiwan, surrounding the country’s capital; New Taipei City has an estimated population of over 3.9 millions and an area of 2052 km2. Since 2010, the city has become one of the newest cabinet levels of municipality of the Republic of China. The High technology industry alone generates annual revenue of NTD.4.0 Trillion. High Technology, Service and Tourism are all part of the major industries in New Taipei City, attracting a high volume of job forces from all over the country with abundant employment opportunities.

2. Summary of Our Project

As Taiwanese Medical technology advancing, Taiwan has changed into aging population society. More people can only stay in their house because their children had grown up and left their home. Many of them want to learn more technique that they had not learned before, so the community college was born. This project is going to tell the how the community colleges in New Taipei City work, what are the classes they taught and what emerge they are facing. We hope that we can popularize this kind of learning organization to achieve the goal of lifelong learning, so every person in Taiwan can live in a world with knowledge.

Taiwan is a developed country, we have computers in most of the classrooms in Taiwan.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

After our team members’ discussing, we consider that the translation work is the hardest part to us. At first, we decided to attend the competition of Taiwan, but we didn’t sign up because we missed some information. We were very upset, but we can’t attend it next year because we need to prepare for our important exam. We decided to attend global competition. Since our mother langue is not English, our English level isn’t as good as those students of countries using English in their day life. At first, we wanted to ask our English teacher to help us to translate our websites, but our leading teacher tell us that we won’t learn anything if we always ask someone to help. Because of that, all our websites is translated by ourselves. We used dictionary to finish all translation. It was very difficult, but all our members still worked hard on it.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Community colleges can promote our lifelong education in Taiwan; we hope by popularizing community colleges, Taiwanese can have the best way to learn in the entire life.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

After we asked the social study teachers, we found that there is a very important thing that they want to teach the students—lifelong education. Nowadays, many people begin to value how important the lifelong education is. We think through this website, we can let every student know that it takes 10 years to grow a tree, while a sound education program may require 10 times as long before it takes root. And they can share with their family and encourage them to learn things that can promote our life quality, not only through the community colleges, but also the Internet learning. We hope we can let everyone show their potential through the education of lifelong education.

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

To complete our project, we used the Internet, libraries, newspaper, and interviewing to search the information we need. There’s one thing that we need to mention is that the Banqiao Community College really helps us a lot. The director there gave us a lot of articles, newspapers and videos so we can find things that we can’t see in the Internet. She also gave us a chance to interview her and an English teacher. We also used the camera to shoot our pictures to show what we found clearly, and we used e-mail and telephone to connect people. In addition to them, our project cannot be without the dictionaries. Although now the Internet can easily translate the words, it can’t tell us how to use them.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

During the researching of our project, I think there’s one thing important for our students—their families. Many of our students’ parents or even their grandparents also attend the community colleges. They helped us to connect the teachers of the classes they attended. And they also told the students what they shouldn’t do during the interviewing and the attending of the classes. They even told the students what their teachers like and their habits, so they wouldn’t do things that the teachers don’t like.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

There are more people who value the importance of lifelong education. By doing this website, we found that there’re more and more people who want to attend the community colleges. When we interviewed the students of community colleges, they were happy because in the past, there wasn’t much information about the community colleges. So they were willing to see that there are a group of students that want to make a website for people to learn something about the community colleges. We also sent our website to those who we interviewed, and they tell us that we need to have more pictures to attract people to see our website. We put more pictures and information. The same thing repeated for many times. Finally, we almost completed and began to translate.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We interviewed the director, teachers and students of the community colleges. We began to connect them after we found that many of our families are the participants of the community colleges. They helped us to easily find people who are related to the community colleges. Besides, we also got a lot of help from the workers in Banqiao Community College, they gave us a lot of information that we can’t find on the Internet. We really thank them a lot. We think the best way to requite them with the best website we can create.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

From doing this project, we found that people in Taiwan are really friendly. They gave everything they have and tell everything they know. They also kept encourage us. That’s why we could finish this website. When we were trying to attend the CyberFair in Taiwan, we didn’t fill all the information. So we didn’t pass the first stage. We were so said, but we didn’t give up. We decided to attend the international CyberFair, so we began to put more information in our website. We translated Chinese into English, and learned more things from it. Although it wasn’t easy for us, but we still tried our best to accomplish the project.
