Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The school, located in the old downtown of Taichung City which borders the Central, North, and West Districts, is an old and famous elementary school. For 85 years, numerous prominent students have graduated from this school. Mr. Ju-Chuan Chou, who set up Chung Shan Medical University and its hospital in South District, also graduated from the elementary school. In 1955, as a dentist, Mr. Chou decided to train more dentists for his hometown Taichung. Therefore, he had kept asking people for funding and support for 5 years. Finally, he set up 'Chung Shan Dentist College' in 1960. Now, there are 6 colleges, 21 departments, and 17 graduate programs in Chung Shan Medical University with nearly 30,000 graduates. The University's dentist clinic becomes the medical center with 3 branch hospitals of Daqing, Chung Shing, and Wen Shin (College of Oral Medicine Center), 7 medical units and 4 developmental centers. These institutions are equipped with advanced facilities and medical services. Thus, they become one of the three major medical centers in Taichung City.

2. Summary of Our Project

We are students from the classes for the gifted. In the course Biological Technology, our teacher introduced Taichung City's medical environment and medical centers. When talking about cancer and genetic issues, our teacher mentioned Mr. Ju-Chuan Chou's morality and dedications to the medical profession, and this really impressed us. Therefore, we would like to visit Chung Shan Medical University because it focuses on humanistic education and prioritizes the patients' interest. Then, we decided to learn the University's hospital through data collection, visiting, interviews, and questionnaires. Our question is what impact and contribution the integration of medical systems will have for the community and its residents. In the course of research, we even held panel discussions and seminars with our teacher for in-depth thinking. We expect that this project can be shared with more people and further ask them to think about their attitudes, values, and vision toward the medical profession.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Although it was practical to use all the software we learned in IT class, we couldn't increase its efficiency. We're slow typewriters even though we're familiar with using computers; we spend a day processing a picture despite our creativity for the photos. Fortunately, all the classmates almost spare their time for our project. We even worked together with everyone's talents; for example, Min-Jun is good at picture software, and then he will focus on film-editing and perfection; Chao-shin and Jia-chi are fast typewriters and they took charge of paperwork. Thus, technical mastery, professional cooperation, and perseverance are the key to solving the problems.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The problems we had to overcome are described as follows: A. The Expertise Needed for the Project Medical studies and technology involve difficult expertise, so we had to spend much time understanding the medical terms, facilities, and equipment so that we could move onto the following research activities, which is a big challenge for the 5th graders at elementary school. We used many learning activities to fill up our knowledge gap if necessary. B. Lack of Efficiency in IT Work Although it was practical to use all the software we learned in IT class, we couldn't increase its efficiency. We're slow typewriters; we spend a day processing a picture despite our creativity for the photos. Fortunately, all the classmates almost spare their time for our project. We even worked together with everyone’s talents. Technical mastery, cooperation, and perseverance are the key to solving the problems. C. Lack of Careful Judgment and Organization The values, ethics, system, law, and even life issues from medical studies all require high-level and profound thinking for research. The students from advanced class have a better grasp of emotional and critical thinking, they are still innocent kids. Lack of maturity influences their judgment on social values. Hence, we increase the interaction by story-telling such as film seminars, interviews with surgeons, and even mental talk with cancer patients. D. The Restriction on Medical Ethics, Privacy, and Safety There are many taboos of visiting a medical institution, and the students had to pay attention to the community patients' privacy protection. For safety, the elementary school students are not allowed to access some places in a medical institution. In that way, all the data (including videos) we acquired must be authorized by the hospital for use on the webpages.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

By way of participating in International Schools CyberFair, we believe that the greatest significance is to enable students, teachers, alumni and community to unite together and mutually understand that we are all living in the same community. Everyone is a part of the community, carrying out their duties and playing a role in the community, and the roles played are inseparable from each other. Also, the unity of the community is an indispensable cornerstone to the prosperity, security, well-being and sustainable development of the community now and in the future. In addition, sound medical facilities and systems are necessary for community prosperity in face of an aging population structure in Taiwan society in the future.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

This research project combines with Taiwan Schools Cyberfair, Grades 1-9 curriculum, and school-based curriculum. Through this research project, students will show their deep concern about the community and life, and further take the responsibility to introduce Taiwanese domestic culture to the world. This will help broaden students' worldview and connect them with the globe. Along with Grades 1-9 curriculum and the curricular activities designed for advanced classes, students shall develop research skills and the 'ten core competences'. 1. Language Arts: to improve listening, speaking, reading, writing and integrate the four skills. 2. Mathematics: to develop the analytical skill of statistics. 3. Social Studies: to respect people, concern the society, and improve the ability for teamwork. 4. Science and Technology: to learn biological and medical knowledge and develop the skill of using information and technology. 5. Arts and Humanities: to develop the ability of beauty appreciation and creativity. 6. Integrative Activities: to enhance self-understanding and develop cooperative attitude for teamwork. 7. Creativity: to bring about students motivation for research and exploration through analyses and discussions 8. Guidance: to carry out self-regulation for each group and develop the ability to plan, organize, and execute for teamwork. 9. High-level Thinking Training: to develop cognitive, independent, and critical thinking through mental talks and interviews. 10. Problem-solving Skill: to hold discussions, do decision- making, make numerous attempts and corrections to solve the problems and difficulty in the research.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

The information tools and technologies we used are described as follows: 1. Hardware Facilities: A. We will use school Internet and make a connection to the Taichung Educational Web Center with optical fibers. The laptops will use WiFi to work. B. There are 6 computers and 5 laptops in the main working rooms, and there are 10 computers in each advanced classroom for students’ learning and research work. C. Cameras, video recorders, printers, and one-eyed projectors are also provided. 2. Software Facilities: They are all the materials from the IT course, including Namo WebEditor 2006, Namo Flash Creator, CyberLink Power Director, PowerPoint 2010, and even iSpring Free. The software also includes Microsoft Word 2010 and Excel.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

1. Interaction with teachers and students at medical school and hospital staff: Through visiting experience and curricular activities, students will work with people from different programs and professions, and enhance the skills of interaction, discussion, and communication with others. This will strengthen their friendships. 2. Interaction with the community residents: Through the volunteering work for healthcare workshops, students will do in-depth conversation with volunteers, patients, and doctors. Through questionnaires, students will enhance their cultural recognition and joint affection to the community by interviewing the residents. 3. Interaction with the school teachers and students: Through the final presentation, the teachers and students at school will know Chung Shan Medical University and its hospital, and learn its functions, organizations, and vision.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

1. The teachers and students at school are more familiar with Chung Shan Medical University and its hospital, and further get good impression on the medical workers' contribution to the community. After hearing the stories and experiences, many teachers and students are deeply moved by the medical workers' hardworking attitude. This project influences the perspective of school teachers, students, and parents on the doctor-patient relationship. 2. In the healthcare workshop, the student volunteers passed through the community residents who were waiting to see a doctor. The atmosphere was pleasant on that day and community residents were so curious that they praised the school education for being creative and interesting. 3. It is the first time that Chung Shan Medical University and its hospital worked with school for the project. From the interaction with the students, the administrative and medical staff felt the researchers’ passion, kindness, and respect. The University even made the project a cover story in their magazine of February, and regarded the project a big encouragement for their pressure. For us, through this project, we would like to show our appreciation and respect to all the medical staff for their dedications. We even give wishes to the University and its hospital’s sustainability.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We would like to acknowledge the invaluable support of a number of individuals and organizations listed as follows: Alumnus Mr. Da-Sen Lai recommended distinguished alumni and members of the Board of Trustees of Chung Shan Medical University Hospital. Student parents: Chia-Tsz Tsao’s mother and student Chao-Hsin Chen’s mother helped pick up students, and did photo-taking, filming and tour-guiding for field trip. Chun Shan Medical Uni. Hospital: Mr. Chou, Ming-Chih, Chairman; Dr. Ke-Huan Lu, Dean; and Dr. Jen-Te Lai, President Hospital Volunteers: Mrs. Tang (Psedy.) Doctor: Dr. Chiu (Psedy.) provided assistance for reporting the institution and Interviewed with students. Chun Shan Medical Uni. Hospital: Dr. Chia-Min Liu, Ms. Hsing-Mei Wang--secretary, Mr. Yin-Huan Wu, and Mr. Shih-Huang Yang helped arrange tour-guide, field trip and sessions; introduce the facilities; instruct the sessions; and provide relevant data about the University and its hospital.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We found that a hospital is more than a place where patients get treatment. The medical profession, in fact, is involved in far-reaching and complex aspects in society. We now know the medical staff managed to provide more and better care for the community residents, and they also served the residents in the community and remote areas with medical care. Moreover, the medical staff tried to integrate different medical divisions for the patients and provide them with mental consolation. Besides, from this project we also learned an important moral. We saw the medical staff’s pressure and problems from their working environment and the need of the sick and depressed for more concern. We deeply felt that in the past we usually held prejudice against superficial cases and then jumped to conclusions on them. The medical profession is really a profound and difficult issue for us. Nevertheless, we couldn't help but feel astonished by the advanced medical technology after spending much time reading and researching. Several students have dreamed of being doctors, and they also clarified the values of what a doctor is for from this project. For us, we have experienced an unforgettable and wonderful journey of medical technology and life.
