Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

We are students of Citra Kasih National Plus Primary School in West Jakarta, Indonesia. It is a private school which was built by Mr Ciputra, a successful entrepreneur who won the “entrepreneur of the year” award held by “Ernst and Young” in 2007. He also founded Ciputra Entrepreneurship Center University (UCEC), a university majored in Entrepreneurship which is located at Surabaya Indonesia. He ordered all teachers working under “Ciputra Group” to teach an Entrepreneurship skill to the students. Our school vision is to be a school that inspires and educates students to be learners who are eager to explore the knowledge, life skills, character development and entrepreneurship skill to meet the twenty first century. There are 24 classrooms in our school. Each level has 4 parallel classes. We have Interest Groups which are necessary for grade 3 up to grade 5 to join. Our interest group name is “Junior Journalists”. For doing this project we worked together with “Web Design” interest group. The task was divided in balanced and fair ways. Journalistic and Web design teams were working together in finding the information, pictures, video, building the website and design. We also planned to interview the Jakarta Governor (Mr. Joko Widodo). Besides the Interest Group program, our school also offers many extra-curricular activities which students can choose and join in order to hone their talents. One of its activities is participating in various competitions, both in academic and non-academic area.

2. Summary of Our Project

Jokowi is a representation of new generation of Indonesian leader. He successfully led many progressive breakthroughs which became widely praised nationally. He adopted the development framework of European cities which he frequently traveled to as a businessman into his own city of Surakarta, Solo. He was elected as a governor of Jakarta due to his succes in leading Surakarta. Jokowi is an inspiration and hope for Indonesian worldwide. Humble, simple, but also smart, innovative, honest, willing to explore himself and approachable. He is, hopefully, become the model of changing, and bring more young leaders to spread the good news. Some of his main achievements include the following: he was able to relocate junk dealers in the Banjarsari Gardens smoothly, a move which was helpful in revitalizing the functions of the open green land; he improved communications with the local community (appearing regularly on local television). His heart is with the marginalized, the lower class of his society, while his policy also highly respected by intellectuals. He made remarkable changes in his city, physically and morally. His story of succes leading and exploring that bring a better and comfortable place to live that our team will try to explore.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

At school, we have Wifi connection. So every classroom can get internet connection easily. Our International internet access uses 1 Mbps, for Indonesia internet exchange access uses 10 Mbps. Our internet access and connection work very well.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1. We have a meeting around 2 hours 30 minutes in a week to do the project. However, every second weeks in a month we always join a Religion Support program in our school, so our Interest group activities will only be done in 1 hour 30 minutes. Some students even joined the remedial class to achieve their academic score improvement, so they asked permission to do the remedial subject. 2. Language difficulties: Many of our sources were written in Indonesian language, and we need to translate it into English, but we got a help from our teacher. 3. It is difficult to interview Governor Jokowi face to face due to his busy activities in exploring and finding Jakarta main problems. He spends much of his time working directly down to the field to visit the residents and to solve the main problem. So, He seldom spends his time at the office. We Thank to Department of Communications, Information and Public Relations who helped us in arranging an interview by phone and fax.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We feel so interested, challenging, exciting and happy because Jokowi inspires other leaders as the best leaders in Jakarta in which his thinking and action are the mirror of the clean governance, caring poor people by boosting the quality of lives for them. He has gained supports from all over the country even from Indonesian students and communities studying/living overseas. We are proud and need people like him to make this country and this world to be better places to live. We hope through this website our governance will explore what the citizen of Indonesia want to have: a clean and responsible governance who has heart to serve.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

1.Our project is related to our national and entrepreneurship curriculum standard for Social Study, Civics, and Language about How to Use Internet and Social Networks in Positive Ways. The project is also connected with our Computer lesson curriculum which learns about how to develop a website, to edit the writing, and to insert picture and video. In Journalistic Interest Group program we develop our writing skills and explore the information of some issues. In Web Design School Interest Group program we learn about: making a website. Our entrepreneurship curriculum applies the learning cycle strategies like exploring, planning, doing, communicating and reflecting. This learning strategy helps us in exploring more about a new mindset for us. We can see that entrepreneurship education will enable us to be the students who dare to take an opportunity creation, create an innovation and have a willingness to explore any kinds of possibilities, and have a willingness to take a risk. Therefore, through this project we learnt more about entrepreneurship principles and shared them to the Global School Net Community. From this project we learnt about how to conduct research on a leadership figure, to explore the information from various resources (internet, books, interview, video, etc), to compile it and to develop a web. This is a new skill and new experience for us. During making this project we could work together as teamwork. We were willing to help each others.

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

For the material, we used books, blog, website, interview , facsimile, internet access and telephone to communicate with Jokowi as a leader who was exploring the society condition to be a future leader in building this nation to have a better future. When we did the project, the tools we used were (1) 16 Computers completed by internet access for searching the materials and notebooks (2) DCR-SR68E Handy cam used to record the video and to take the photo. (3) 1 Flash Disk used to save data storage and transfer. (4) A Scanner used to scan the photo. (5) A cell phone used to communicate. (6) Facsimile used to send the written interview questions to Jokowi. The program we used was Microsoft Office 2007 which was used to process the data. Google Chrome was used to Search materials, and www.wix.com was used to build the website.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

This is the second time for our school to join the cyberfair project competition in primary level, so the publication was only given to our limited community likes our classmates in grade 4 and 5, teachers and parents. Many teachers were impressed with our work, the school was proud of us and supported what we were doing. We hope that through our project we could motivate others how to explore themselves to be good leaders for this nation.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We hope that more people are inspired to be leaders who are willing to explore about what is going on outside with their people. They not only stay in the office but we hope they will learn to explore and observe what happen around us. We really hope to have clean governance who has a heart to lead and serve this country into a better future.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We had to devote our great thanks to some people who have helped us: 1. Mr. Joko Widodo 2. Ministry of Communication, Information and Public Relation 3. Ms. Lanny Natakarmana as a Principal of Citra Kasih Primary School who always supported us. 4. Ms. Dina Widiyana and Mr. James Mitra who gave us some advices, helped us manage the interview schedule with Mr. Jokowi and guided us completing the project content. 5. Mr James Mitra who always guided us to find and build the website. 6. Ms Agnes Eritasari , an English Teacher, who helped us check the grammar correctness.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

It has been a year after we joined the last International School Cyberfair. We discovered that students were motivated to join it again. We tried to work as a good teamwork though we are from different levels. We discovered that it was not easy to combine our different opinion and to unite each of our talents and skills in order to improve our past project to be better. We were surprised to find that students of grade 4 could work together with grade 5.
