Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our local community is mainly Daxi, the hometown of the legendary diva, Fong Feifei. Daxi Township is in Taoyuan County, northern Taiwan. The total area is 105.1206km2; it’s the second biggest town of Taoyuan. In the past Daxi was prosperous due to its inland port. Now it’s a popular tourism destination for the scenery, special foods and produce. The name, Daxi, its geographical environment and development are all related to water. Great mountains and water make Daxi beautiful, prosperous and rich in culture.

2. Summary of Our Project

Fong Feifei, a prominent Taiwanese diva, died of lung cancer in Hong Kong on the 3rd of January, 2012. Throughout her more than forty-year career, her fans’ love for her has always been constant. She started her career in the 70’s. Her performances include singing, hosting, TV series and movies. Her style was unique. Her special vocal skills and how she interacted with her fans made her an extraordinary artist. She always looked on the bright side and was very persistent which made her a very good model for us. We will never forget such a great artist and wonderful person. In order to share her spirit and let more people know about this voice from Taiwan, we made this CyberFair project, The Immortal Diva – Fong Feifei. 4. Problems We Had To Overcome

As soon as we heard the sad news about Fong’s death in February, 2012, we decided to do a project about her for the CyberFair 2013. When we were collecting information and doing interviews, we also created a Facebook group for Fong’s fans to know what we were engaging in so they could join us. The first problem was selecting the best material that could represent her traits out of millions of bits of information. Eventually, we decided that Fong’s friendliness could be the “perch”, so we focused on her personality and influence. While we were collecting videos, we found another problem, copyrights. A lot of songs’ copyrights didn’t define the limit of authority, so we had to contact the owner of the songs and videos we wanted to use to give us permission. We thought it would have been difficult, but they were helpful. We followed our schedule and realized time was not on our side. So many people we planned to interview were busy which made it hard for us to make appointments. Fortunately, school helped us, so we were able to take care of our school work and got to interview these important people, so our project is more in-depth.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Fong in my mind was a superstar from my parents’ generation. Now we realize the reason she could be successful was her character – diligent, self-disciplined, persistent. She was a role model. She was very friendly to her fans which made us understand the importance of sincerity. She never acted like a distant and unapproachable superstar. As a result, our definition of idol has changed. Moreover, every person we interviewed that related to Fong enlightened us. They were all influenced by Fong and felt her friendliness, selflessness and passion. Therefore, we learned that successful singers have high standards for themselves and can change the people and things around them. This is a precious learning experience for us and it makes us want to enrich ourselves and make good plans for the future.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our project covers three major fields, language arts, social studies, art and humanity arts. We have learned a lot from the beginning of Fong’s career to her departure and have a different comprehension of the 70’s and 80’s songs. Her beautiful lyrics enrich our sense of music and language arts. Conducting interviews and holding exhibitions let us know more about our bountiful Taiwanese culture. We put cultural creativity into practice. Moreover, in order to introduce Fong to foreign teachers, we had to work hard on translation skills which helped us develop a cosmopolitan outlook.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

projector, interviews, telephones, internet, book, reports, pen recorders, DV, DSLR cameras, scanner, printer, laptop, flash discs, software - FrontPage2000, dreamweaver3.0, PhotoImpact7.0, Golden wave3.0

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We found many fans on Fong’s official website, and we contacted them to arrange interviews. We went from the north to the south, and encountered Fong’s brother, the lecture by Farglory Group, Mr. Xue (the Fong Pavilion) and some fans from Yunlin. We got so many precious documents, audio and videos. We could see the true friendship between Fong and her fans. Moreover, in order to play ambassadors well, we arranged tour guides in English at the exhibition on campus for foreign teachers. Our exhibition was the first Fong memorial exhibition in south central Taiwan. The whole school received visitors from all over Taiwan. We were trying to make this legendary diva more local and national, so she could still shine in every corner of the world.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Almost all the activities to remember Fong were held in northern and southern Taiwan. Because of CyberFair, we had the chance to hold the very first Fong memorial exhibition in south central Taiwan, especially for fans nearby. Therefore, we got a lot of support and compliments. They expected our exhibition to be able to express Fong’s spirit. Local spirit and culture are not that easy to pass down. Through collecting Fong’s information, we also learned about the farming society and what laborers think.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

During the process of doing the project research, we received both spiritual encouragement and sponsorship of different materials. Because of everyone’s support, the process was smooth and successful. Some friends and helpers have been listed to thank you for their all support.

1.TTV (Taiwan Television Enterprise)- authorized the clip of Golden Melody Awards with 3D projection of Fong 2.CTS (Chinese Television System)- authorized the show, Put the Light On 3.Lin Huangkun 4.Xue Zhenhong 5.Lin Yunong 6.Fans from Douliu: Xie Cuiping, Lin Zhiyou Fans: Wang Yizhen, You Shufen, Chen Xiangling 7.Jiang Yanwei, a lawyer 8.UDN News

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Due to generation gap, Fong was not an idol we were familiar with, but through instructors' help and Fong's fans' contribution on Facebook, we've learned about this treasure of Taiwan. In fact, Taiwanese talk show was originated from Fong's hosting, and skits we can often see on TV started from Fong's shows as well. Besides, we found her collections of many unreleased Taiwanese folk songs from her albums. the beautiful local music amazed us. It is said that fruits are sweetest when they are ripped. Nevertheless, the process taught us a great lesson, such as discussions, contact by phone, making questionnaires, interviews, solving problems and organizing exhibitions. In truth, being a little journalist is not easy, but the hardship is like nutrition that helps us grow.
