Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our school is situated at Songhua Community, Shouan Town, Pujiang County, Chengdu City, Sichuan Province. You can get there by bus at Chengdu Xinnanmen Long-Distance Bus Terminal. It will take you 40 minutes or so to get Shouan Exit along the Chengdu-Ya’an Expressway. Songhua is about 5km west of the exit.

2. Summary of Our Project

Pujiang is focusing on establishing and developing high-end industries and industrial high ends, as well as on building it into a provincial strong county of modern agricultural industry base, top tourist attraction, Chengdu iconic site for rural tourism, model line of Shouan-Wolong Road along Linxi River and the most beautiful countryside valley in Western China. We hope to add an extra heavy weight to Pujiang’s gold-lettered signboard – “Ecological and livable” through the introduction in our web pages, thus making more people know about and fall in love with Pujiang.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our school uses the private network of Education Group whose speed can’t meet the practical requirements. Furthermore, our school is equipped with one computer room that we can hardly get access to it because it is used by many classes, so the work of Western Story and web page making are arranged to be done at school executive office. Although there are three computers in the office, they are often occupied by teachers for researching materials and printing files. We have to find every possible place like teacher’s home and other leader’s office to get the job done.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

First: Time limitation. We registered for the completion late, and students living in school got up at 6:50 in the morning and finished study at 9p.m at night, leaving little time for writing stories and making web pages. Teacher Liu was our head teacher who had to do some work in school executive office. In such circumstance, we had to find every possible time to do preparation work. Second: We have confined our subject to local environment, and chosen Linxi River, the second largest river in Pujiang, as the competition topic. Although the river is near our school, it is a river with a total flow path of 76.7km and basin area of 357.5km2, and we have some limits on going out, so we can’t visit every place of it and have to step back to explore its Songhua Sector near our school. Third: The collection of information. It is very inconvenient to explore Linxi River due to the numerous canals and ditches along the river. Therefore, we took a day at weekend to explore Jinyan River, the largest branch in Songhua. We took a lot of pictures and asked local elder people for information. After that, we further found some other information on the Internet.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

With perfect ecological environment, Pujiang is on a road of sustainable development. If the rivers here can be carefully treated and cared about, Pujiang will develop better in the future.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The activity can help students in the following respects: 1. Training their group spirit; 2. Training their abilities of viewing life and fetching information; 3. Broadening their visions; 4. Making them know about Linxi River, arousing their lover for hometown as well as enthusiasm in hometown construction; 5. Encouraging them to study hard and master more knowledge in order to make contribution to their hometown.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

This year, we have made web pages about Linxi River, which involve the utilization of phones, digital cameras, USB drives, computers and network. Moreover, we have bicycled and walked with the teacher to Linxi River and its branch Jinyan River for investigation. Phones: for contacting interviewees and arranging access time Computers: for text inputting, web pages making and pictures processing Digital cameras: for taking pictures USB drives: for data storage and backup CISS: for web page making Microsoft Word: for texts inputting and compiling Internet Explorer: for collecting materials from the Internet and connecting to the Internet Website and Network: website column and BBN (private net of Pujiang education) Bicycles: for investigating and interviewing

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The activity has made people in Songhua know more about our school, and the interviews have made them understand that our school not only taught us knowledge in books, but guided us to know and understand the society as well as encouraged us to care about the environment and make contribution to our hometown.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Through the research, we have learned how to cooperate as well as how to effectively communicate with people and interviewees. In addition, we have also known how to sort materials. Many teachers and students in our school has browsed the web pages of “Pujiang Popcorn”, “Pujiang Tea Industry”, “Pujiang Kiwi” and “Red Sunset” we made in the past. They speak highly of us when they know that our web pages have won prizes in International Internet Culture Expo. We are all proud of ourselves for that we have set up a good image for our school. Our web pages will be accessible to many people through the Internet. Then people will know better about the water resources and ecological environment in Pujiang, and thus paying more attention to the place. It is probably that someone will come here one day for economic cooperation. In that case, our research will be a great help to the economic growth of Pujiang.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Here we would like to express our gratitude to our families and local people for their great help during interviews.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Through visiting and investigation, we have found that Linxi River mainly helps in irrigation with a lot of regular and irregular weirs along the way. There used to be 5 weirs in Songhua Section, of which two are still playing critical roles today. Among them, Zhifang Weir is the second largest one, which is irrigating and nourishing the vast land in Songhua and Wuxing as well as some lands in Huilong Town of Qionglai City. Thanks to the favorable water source, the farm production is very developed on both sides of the river.
