Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taichung Broadcasting Bureau, with its light yellow appearance, sits on'Radio Station Street', an alley that stretches out from First High School Street. To Taichung residents, ' First High School Street' is a renowned place. Thanks to the convenient mass-transportation, it not only amazes people by various tasty local delicacies and cuisines, but also appeals to swarms of people with its fashion culture. What's more, it is rated as one of Taiwan’s top ten scenic spots that attract the most foreigners and tourists. There are more famous landscapes surrounding Taichung Broadcasting Bureau as follows: Chungyo Department Store, known for the unique theme lavatories on each floor,The stadium of National Taiwan Sport University, where sport matches and large outdoor activities often take place, Wenying Museum, which dedicates to the development of Taiwan traditional printing and crafts and on top of it, Taichung ChungHsing Hall, in which diverse musical concerts are often held. The nearby community comprising shopping sites, academic organizations, art institutions, and everything concerning common life, is just like a miniature of society. In contrast to these bustling sites, the tranquility of Taichung Broadcasting Bureau is like a historic castle, whose serene atmosphere makes visitors feel peaceful as well as enriches the spiritual life of Taichung residents.

2. Summary of Our Project

Broadcasting Bureau of Taichung, located at No.1, Radio-station St., Taichung City, was built in 1935. Having been standing there for over 70 years, it’s an old friend to the Taichung residents. In 2005, Cultural Affair Bureau of Taichung City Government delegated Super FM 99.1 to manage it. Thanks to Super FM 99.1’s operation, it not only shows us the glory that Broadcasting Bureau of Taichung used to be, but also helps keep the transmission of culture. In 2010, another institution, Mu Ci Chang Corporation, took over the management. We are going to visit the place in person, hoping to evoke the legacy and the old sound of the exquisite heritage. Also, with our public website, we could show the public the culture and art around, letting the Broadcasting Bureau of Taichung keep broadcasting endless rhyme!

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Bearing in mind the fact that this was a team field investigation project, our team often faced the problem of an unsuitable schedule. Along with the problem of not being familiar with the website structure and designs, we also faced the challenge of the project taking more time to complete than we initially expected. Moreover, schoolwork became harder to accomplish as college entrance exams approached closer on the horizon. Therefore, we now have begun to utilize the function of holding our discussions during lunchtime in order to save other valuable time for necessary study.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Our goal is to have a better understanding toward our local humanity and environment through this field investigation and spread the broadcasting culture of Taichung Broadcasting Bureau in the mean time. In addition, our method relies on the extensive use of the school's website and information technologies as well as expertise division in order to achieve maximum efficiency.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We applied the knowledge and skills we learned in the process of making monographic web pages so that we had a deeper understanding of Taichung. To reach the most important thing in teamwork-efficiency, we worked together according to what each member was good at. In the era of technology, computer has played an indispensable role in our lives; consequently, in this event, we made extensive use of information equipment and networked skills which were taught in school. Also, the convenience of the Internet let us keep in touch with others almost anytime and anywhere, and obtain the required or timely information.

The most important task we 'ambassadors' do is to let more people know this historic building, Broadcasting Bureau of Taichung, and feel the atmosphere which is full of Japanese style. Therefore, we went to Broadcasting Bureau of Taichung in person. We observed through our eyes, listened to the culture and history of Taichung Broadcasting Bureau via the guide 's narration as well as experienced this historical remain conserved with our hearts. After that, we made a deeper analysis of the proportions we considered to be special and wonderful, and then organized them into text data and files. Hoping that it can be spread to every place in Taiwan, we made all the data into web pages. Moreover, we translated the web pages into English version so that not only can we introduce the beauty of the culture in Taichung to the world, but everyone can have a better understanding of our monographic studies as well.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Through doing this project, we have a deeper understanding of the history of Taichung Broadcasting Bureau, as well as feeling proud of being a Taichung resident. Nevertheless, there are still lots of people not aware of the existence of the treasured historic site: therefore, it is essential that we introduce the marvelous place to everyone.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

All the members of our team went to Taichung Broadcasting Bureau together first to get the preliminary understanding of its building, history, function, and so on. We took some shots in addition. Then we reserved commentarial guide before we visited there. Through the guide’s specific introductory, we learned about the place much better. Furthermore, we had made some questionnaires for the inhabitants and tourists nearby to fill in, hoping to get more valuable information.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

“Wow! What a castle!” we marveled a lot as we stepped into this fabulous location. The medieval Europe building style looked tranquil and solemn. Inside the building floated the warm atmosphere. No wonder it’s a popular spot where wedding photos are taken. It’s also being chosen as one of the most significant cultural heritages by Taichung Cultural Affairs Bureau. Via the precious chance of making the project, we trace back the history of Taichung Broadcasting Bureau. It was an influential radio station broadcasting news to Taichung residents over several decades in the past. To us, undoubtedly, this is a project full of surprises.
