Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Huatan Township, located in central Taiwan, is a small village with about forty-six thousand residents. Most people in Huatan Township grow rice for living. The famous rice brand in Taiwan, King-town Rice, just comes from Huatan Township. Besides, there are some famous brick kilns in Huatan Township. Ba-Gua Kiln and Brick Kiln Culture Museum are the resorts that many families will visit on holidays.

2. Summary of Our Project

In the past, bricks were used to build the house. However, as time goes by, the brick industry has declined. But nowadays, with many people’s efforts, the brick industry has a new and bright prospect. The art of bricks has caught more and more people’s eye. In our project, we introduced the brief story and the art performance of the bricks. We hope to popularize the bricks by making our project webiste.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Because this is our first time to make the website, we encountered some technical problems. However, with the help of the teachers, we found out the problems and solved them. Besides, at first, we had no ideas about what to do for our project. But after discussing with our team members and the teachers, we worked out the outline of the project. Then, as the project went on, we made great progress and finally finished our project. This is really a wonderful experience for us.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Bricks are very common in most buildings. But if we pay more attention to bricks, we will find that bricks are not only materials for buildings but also works of art. As a result, we participate in the International Schools CyberFair to explore the beauty of the bricks and by making the project website we could let more and more people appreciate the beauty of the bricks.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

By conducting the International Schools CyberFair project, we learned many skills related to the curriculum at school. When we looked for information on the Net and made the project website, we developed the skills of using the technology, which is related to the computer course. When we summarized and organized the information we got from the Net, we learned to write articles in both Chinese and English, which is related to the language course. Besides, in the process of conducting our project, we needed to learn to express and share our ideas with each other, which focused on the importance of teamwork. Also, we learned to actively participate in our research and solve the problems we had met.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We used many useful tools to finish our project. For example, we used the camera and the voice-recorder when we did the interview. We used the computers and notebooks to look for information on the Net, to write our project outline and to make the project website. All the tools play important roles in the process of conducting the project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Our project topic is the beauty of bricks. The brick kilns have been the pride of Huatan, Changhua County. However, the industry of bricks has been declining. As a result, we want to spread the beauty of bricks to people so that more and more people will understand that bricks are not only materials for buildings but also works of art. This is our mission, and we will accomplish our mission by making our project website.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

In the process of conducting our project, we went to the famous brick kilns in Huatan, Changhua County. We interviewed the staff there, took many pictures of different bricks, and appreciated the beauty of bricks. After finishing the project, we introduced our project to our classmates and teachers at our school. Also, we made up a project website to let more and more people in Taiwan know the beauty of bricks in Huatan. And now, we joined the International Schools CyberFair and translated our project website into the English version to let people around the world know more about our project. We believe that through our hard work on the project and the website, people could know more about the beauty of bricks in Taiwan.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Since we are just junior high school students, we need other people’s help to finish our project. The teachers taught us how to look for information on the Net, how to organize the data we collected, how to prepare for the interviewing and how to make the website. The staff in the brick kilns gave us clear explanation and introduction about the brick industry, and demonstrated how to carve the bricks, how lay the bricks and so on. Thanks to many people’s help, we solved the problems that we encountered during the conducting of the whole project and finally finished our project website.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

When doing our project, we found that many bricks in our daily life are so special and unique. This prompted us to keep curious about everything in our daily life. As long as we pay attention, we can see the greatness of everything around us.
