Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Haishiwan is located in the outer suburbs of Lanzhou and is where the government of the district of Honggu—one of Lanzhou’s five districts and three counties. Haishiwan leans against the hill and faces the river, and is split into two areas by a railway, one in the south and the other in the north. The northern area is the site of municipal government organs while the southern area is where the original Lanzhou Carbon Co., Ltd. and the Fourth Northwest Metallurgical Company lie. In the early day it was the two plants that stimulated the economic development of the southern area, and whether the operation of the two plants was good or bad determined whether people’s living standard and environment were good or bad. Facing the wave of development of economy and technology in China, the two plants closed down in succession due to the depression of state-owned enterprise, resulting in the decline of people’s life, polluted, disorderly and poor living environment, and turbid domestic water.

2. Summary of Our Project

Through the investigation into the southern Haishiwan, we had a better understanding of people’s living condition in the southern Haishiwan, and through the special study program, we felt the importance and urgency to change its living environment as well as protect its environment, thus we called on everybody to appeal for the government’s planning to change the living environment and protect our green home. Let’s take action to mobilize the government, the public and the whole society for the alteration of the environmental problems caused by historical reasons to coordinate the urban development. Let’s become a master of the city and an advocate of environmental protection to let people know the importance to change the appearance of the city and realize that this should start from the little things right under our noses.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:1

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Under our teacher’s guidance, our plan fell into place and we started to work on it with a strong interest. At the thought of the fame of our work and names would be realized on the Internet, we were emboldened to carry on at once. Through the participation in this activity, our interpersonal interaction ability is trained and we learned much knowledge that was beyond the textbook. Moreover, we felt the importance of team unity in the process of interview, online access to information and webpage making, for we knew that the task could never be completed by means of personal power. This was a rare opportunity and we treasured it very much. During the whole process of our special study program, we not only learned some computer skills, but also deeply appreciated the honor to be a city master as well as the importance of urban appearance and environment.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

(1). Participating for the first time, we had to cross a river by feeling the stones, consulting, and learning while carrying on our program. And when having problems, we would timely ask the teacher across the Netcom or communicate with old member schools.

(2). We also met many difficulties in the process of material collection and webpage making. Our special study this time was about the Southern District of Haishiwan, and it was difficult to collect relevant information, for this reason, we had to make interviews and take pictures by us own.

(3). Time restriction. As something was wrong with our school’s online registration system then, which resulted in the registration delay, we had to spare our lunch hours for taking picture and make interviews and record on weekends.

(4). Next, our instructors were very busy with their work, giving lessons to many classes while guiding us to make the webpage, so they were very laborious. Here, we want to say thanks to them.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The activity received strong support from the school leaders and teachers. Personal investigation broadened our horizons and enhanced our social practice ability. Through the special study program, we understood that where there is a will, there is a way, and one will succeed as long as he has belief and overcomes difficulties.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In the classroom teaching, we mainly learn some basic knowledge while in the special study program this time we mainly conducted practical activity. We linked some knowledge we learned at school at ordinary times with practice, which enlarged our views and made us have a good understanding of the environment in the Southern District of Haishiwan so that we could call on everybody to take action to change their environment, and in this way we not only mastered the computer knowledge, but also trained our social practice ability. Meeting some difficulties along the way though, we learned the knowledge we didn’t know before, renewed our philosophy of environmental protection and, in a word, we benefited a lot from the activity.
