Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Ningxia lies in the west of China. It has gained a laudatory tile of “the home of wolfberry”. The local flavor of Ningxia is characterized by its combined flavor of traditional Central Plain favor and Moslem cruisine. Thanks to the favorite natural environment and climate, the lamb in Ningxia has no smell of mutton. The lamb of 2 – 3 months old is the best, which is tender but not greasy. Huangquqiao Quick-fried Lamb is made of the finest lamb which is chopped into cubes and then stir-fried. The dish is soft white rosy, tasty but not greasy. It’s perfect in nourishing and strengthening body. Our research starts from the point. After repeated discussion, we finally choose “Huangquqiao Quick-fried Lamb – the famous food in Pingluo” as our research direction. We mainly introduce its origin, ingredients, favor styles, cooking methods and nutritional value, thus showing the characteristics of the dish to all people. I hope our introduction will make people have a totally new understanding of the dish and bring the special food to the outside world like fast food.

2. Summary of Our Project

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1. Students have little opportunities to use computers. Most time at school is study time, and students are not allowed to enter the computer room without permission, let alone surfing the Internet, and moreover, we have no computers in our family, so we have little chance to get familiar with website template. Our only knowledge is taught by the instructive teacher through verbal presentation. 2. Computers in our school are of poor facilities. They always run at rather slow speed when we use it. And because our school is located in rural area and relatively more computers are linked with Internet, the net speed is really slow. Sometimes, we should spend much time to upload a picture, so we have to sort the texts and handle the pictures before hand, and then the instructive teacher upload them onto the website in the afternoon at home. 3. We have encountered many difficulties in interviews. Our instructive teacher has too much work to do at school, so he has no time to lead us out for interviews unless in his spare time. We do our first interview at Navy Restaurant which is 30km away from our school. It took us 40 minutes to go there by bus. When we arrived, with the strong support of Shi Xiaoshan, the owner of the restaurant, we found some valuable information and took a lot of pictures. 4. Time is not enough. We only have two months to prepare for the competition. Though we began to establish the group, determine theme and make plans at the beginning of the term, we had a conflict with Wuxiang Middle School on the halfway. At last, we determined “Huangquqiao Quick-fried Lamb – the famous food in Pingluo” as the theme in October.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

This is the first time for us to participate in the competition. The activity makes us well understand of ourselves and find many deficiencies on us. The competition helps us to develop the ability of independent thinking and solving problems. We have gained a lot; we have understood local color and relevant stories and we are all unifies together by the competition and work together. Moreover, the research makes us learn to communicate with and believe in others as well as learn to be self-effacing, generous and grateful. Though a bit hard, we all know “no pains, no gains”. Only when making efforts, can we gain sweet fruits. We hope to enjoy the web pages with all the people.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

This time, we conduct our research around “Huangquqiao Quick-fried Lamb”. We not only take into consideration the local history, geography, art, culture and social communication, but combine local food culture. We start our research from people around us. We have known many stories and legends about lamb from their words and actions. We determine personally the operating hours for our works. Those are all things that we can’t gain from books.

At the same time, we encourage and communicate with each other during work and interviews, which not has only enhanced our friendship, but made us learn the group spirit. Along the way, we have gained much selfless help from many people, which teaches us how to love and care for other people. Those are the things we should and must continue to study.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We think it is a great honor for us to inform people of Huangquqiao Quick-fried Lamb. We should act as ambassadors of community to make more people know about the food. We make the information we have gathered into questionnaires to do study on different groups. We distribute questionnaires to different students, local villagers, pupils and old people, hoping that our investigation will make them better understand special food in the hometown. We make the research results available on the web page, so as to let more people know about Huangquqiao Quick-fried Lamb through the Internet.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The research makes us further understand Huangquqiao Quick-fried Lamb. And it also lets us well know about the food culture of Pingluo. We have the confidence to make our website best, so as to let more people get the information of the food on the Internet. It is important to know about Huangquqiao Quick-fried Lamb. During research, we have felt the charm of the dish. We hope our research will make more people know about it. Welcome all friends to Pingluo. Let’s make efforts to bring the dish to the world.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

After more than one month of efforts, we at last finish the research. Looking at the finished web pages, we can’t believe it’s the fruit of our work. Except us, some other people also make their contributions, such as Qiaoxiangwancai Company, our school headmaster Wan Hongshan, teacher Ren Xuezhen, as well as the owner of the restaurant, common people and some students who have accepted our interviews. Here we’d like to express our great gratitude to them. We hope that our research will make more people pay attention to people’s life and local special foods, and urge them to practically improve the development environment for traditional restaurants and unique catering industry.
