Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Tongjiang County is located in a mountain area that is held to be culturally backward. Tongjian has a long history. Early in neolite era, our forefathers have lived and multiplied on this land according to the unearth relic of the Lehuzai in south county. Tongjiang has the rich eco-tourism resources that consist of the largest mountain water-eroded cave sights group in southwest China, ecotourism in Mount Kongshan and “Red tourism” sights. Even more, Tongjiang county is full of edible fungi that is white fungus, Xianggu mushroom, tremella fuciformis, rhizoma gastrodiae and giant arum.

2. Summary of Our Project

Tongjiang County is located in a mountain area that is held to be culturally backward. Because of the lack of transport facilities, nobody knows of the speciality of this county. We live here and have the duty to let the world know the speciality of our hometown. We would do our bit to help build up the countryside. On October 28, 2011, we heard that Tongjiang white fungus travelled into space by Shenzhou VIII spaceship in a breeding experiment. The news confirmed our determination to let the world know more about Tongjiang.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our school is through the fibers Internet access, using 5M network. We have slow-speed Internet access at school because of multiple users in a local area network.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The time pressure: Each of our students have heavy learning tasks, the time of project became big question. So, we make full use of our weekend time to do the project. The network problem: Because the homeland is located at mountain area, the communication is very poor. The speed of internet is slow. The power failure: Because the homeland is located at mountain area, the power supply might be shut down when it rained. It rained continually this year in my hometown. It was not an unusual event that the electric supply failed. Without electricity we could not do anything, including surf internet. The bad computer skill: Because we have very limited knowledge or skills related to computer know-how, our teacher specifically trained us on computer skill.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

When the project was completed, the feelings of win came over us. After all we put in a lot of hard work to finish the project .

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The building of our hometown can not rely solely on the support of government policies; we shall have to rely on our own efforts. So, we want to take advantage of the project to publicize our hometown. We were glad we had done our bit in building up the countryside. By participating the project of CyberFair, we learned something we will never be able to get from the textbooks, carried out effective practice in communicative skills and enriched our mind.
