Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Originally Kaohsiung was simply a large bamboo thicket inhabited by the Makatau tribe. They had named the area “Takou”. In 1920, the Japanese established a Kaohsiung State. The name Kaohsiung comes from the Chinese pronunciation of the Japanese written form of “Takou”. In 1924, the area was renamed Kaohsiung City. This was when Kaohsiung officially became a city. In 1979, it was recognized as Taiwan’s second municipality. Kaohsiung is located Taiwan’s Southwestern region and is a long narrow stretch of land. Its total area consists of 2,946 square kilometers. Chianan and Pingtung plains are located on the north and east sides. The Taiwan Straits are located to the west and the Bashi Channel to the south. Geographically it is in an ideal location. The large harbor makes it an important trade and commerce stop along the Northeast Asia / South Pacific passageway. This has quickly propelled the development of this international city.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

In the process of creating the web, we faced many problems. Not only weren't we familiar with some things about software, this was also the first time we've ever participated in this variety of competition. We were all strangers in many aspects of the competition,so we had to be even more diligent and ask often to solve our problems. However, the lack of time was also one of our problems. And in the addition of lacking both information and experiences, our strengths couldn't match our ambitions and we didn't know how to act. These kinds of situations made us couldn't help feeling that we had no alternative.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

This competition has let us understand the importance of teamwork and work distribution. We assigned our jobs according to our interests and expertise. For example, team members who were good at animation, were arranged to the animation group.....,usw. When we encountered problems, we discussed and investigated them together, and we come up with solutions as a team. Seeing Calligraphist David Chen's passion for calligraphy made us deeply feel how enthusiastic David Chen is in promoting this variety of art. We have not only learned much, it also gave us a deep understanding of calligraphy culture.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We all exist in the age of expanding information. Electronization has solemnly became a trend. How to use technology to express traditional Chinese art lets the air of tradition shine an even brighter light in the society of civilized technology. In the process of making our monographic study, learning lessons have little elaboration, but none of the learning lessons could give us experiences which only actually fumbling ourselves can be obtained. Unurged learning is a key in education in the future.

The inheritance of traditional culture is possible to everyone,we used the boundlessness of the Internet and technical information to let everyone know traditional culture isn't too far for us to reach. Now, we can spread traditional culture throughout the place, and once again shine the light.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In the beginning, knowing we were going to participate in a website competition (topic was local leader), our warmhearted Vice Principal Shu Shiao Bao introduced to us Principal David Chen. And through Mrs. Pi-Hua Lu and Mr. Shang-Chun Tsai's telephone connection with Principal David Chen, we found out about the principal's recent activities, thus arranged a interview right on the spot.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

This competition has let us understand the importance of teamwork and work distribution. We assigned our jobs according to our interests and expertise. For example, team members who were good at animation, were arranged to the animation group.....,usw. When we encountered problems, we discussed and investigated them together, and we come up with solutions as a team. Seeing Calligraphist David Chen's passion for calligraphy made us deeply feel how enthusiastic David Chen is in promoting this variety of art. We have not only learned much, it also gave us a deep understanding of calligraphy culture.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

When Principal David Chen was principal of Renwu Junior High School, he promoted a calligraphy movement, and requested students to participate in the school's calligraphy competition. And later on, he became the committee of the Chinese Culture Renaissance Movement, and promoted 'Standard Running Script' through out the community. The calligraphy movement he promoted not only let many people participate in the process of learning calligraphy, but also gave us an experience that would change our thoughts about calligraphy forever.
