Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Pu-Li, well-known for its hand-made paper, has great basins and water naturally filtered through the soil at an altitude between 380 to 700 meters. Pu-Li is also known as 'the village of water' and it is the water that makes the hand-made paper so famous. The project aims at investigating the development of the hand-made paper industry in Pu-LI and hopes to make people learn more about this valuable traditional paper-making.

2. Summary of Our Project

Paper-making is one of the greatest techniques in Chinese history. Since Tsai Luan made the first sheet of paper in 105 A.D., thousands of kinds of paper have been made and innovated. From the superb technique to a stylish painting, hand-made paper is the basic but the most important element to make the drawing more perfect. It is more than a piece of paper, but a unique piece of work of arts which will touch people's heart. Join us to the paper world and explore the mystery of this traditional cultural industry.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

From the very beginning, we knew little about paper-making. Through the teamwork, we learned what it really means 'no pain, no gain.' No matter how difficult and arduous it was, we still kept going toward our goal which is to awaken people's awareness to cultural traditions and environmental concerns. It is an unforgettable experience to us.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

'No pain, no gain' Through the goal, not only our team members but also others to know more about the traditional paper-making of hand-made paper. Thus, people can cherish the hand-made paper and protect our environment.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Through the project, our learning becomes more interactive. Except for learning from the textbook, we had the field study and interviews to explore the local specialty. Moreover. with the advance of technology and the assistance of the International CyberFair, we could have the chance to improve our abilities of investigation and use the Internet as a media for communication, which makes the project more meaningful and practical

The use of software includes: 1. Word 2003 for editing relevant data and arrange materials 2. Internet Explorer 8 for surfing the Internet 3. Yahoo Messenger for group discussions 4. Ulead PhotoImpact 12 for editing and making photos 5. 2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Through interviews and surveys, we had the chance to meet and interview the founder of the Pu-Li Hand-made Paper Museum. This project hopes to make people today to cherish what they have and not to waste the resources given by the earth. Every sheet of paper deserves to be used meaningfully.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Though the hand-made paper-making industry is downsizing, there are still a few people trying hard to preserve the tradition of making paper. Few people know that it is time-and energy-consuming to make such a good sheet of paper, but most people take paper for granted and use it up in seconds. From the project, it hopes to awaken people's awareness to our natural resources and treasure paper.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We would like to show our gratitude to the founder of the Pu-Li Hand-made Paper Museum. Also, some seniors in Pu-Li are also appreciated. Without them, this project could not be done successfully and profoundly. More, we are grateful to the assistance of the International CyberFair for giving us the chance to learn something out of textbook and have the space to share our work with people from other countries.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Before the project, a piece of paper means nothing to us. Through the practice of paper-making, it is amazing to know how time-and energy-consuming it is to make a sheet of paper. Since then, we take a different light when using paper, knowing that it is made with the hardworking of the maker.
