Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Dan Ma Village, a village in Tianjia Zhai Town, located in the southeast of Huangzhong County, Xining City of Qinghai Province, 42 kilometers away from the county government office. The total population of the village is 3000, consisting of mainly the Han and a minority of the Hui, the Zang and the Man nationalities. In spite of the approximate 18 square kilometers it covers, Dan Ma Village boasts a lot. Firstly, within the area under the village’s jurisdiction, there was found Kunlun colored jade ore, and established one processing spot for pilling embroidery, which is one of the top three brilliant arts in Ta'er Tower. Besides, Primeval Forest Vacation Resort, Ji Li (in the meaning of luck) Mountain Tourism Health Resort and some other tourism spots and attractions can be found there. Due to the abundant water resource and cool climate in the village, Zhongzang herbs enjoy the best fertile soil in both the wild nature and the plantations. Moreover, Dan Ma Village embraces vast natural pastures and forest. Among the former, Gayuan’er and the other four villages have been built into scaled bases for fattening and trafficking the flocks and herds, while for the latter, there are over 5000 mu sea-buckthorn within the area under the jurisdiction of Dan Ma Village.

2. Summary of Our Project

This activity was aiming to help students gain comprehensive and healthy sustainable development on feeling, health and ability, draw their attention on economic development of the hometown, and build their favorable life goals. There were totally 15 students participating in this activity, divided into three groups to conduct the research. The first group investigated the basic situation in Ping Tai Village, the second group looked into the carnation planting methods, and the last group studied the economic problems arising from planting carnation in sheds. The team leader of each team collected and sorted out their own investigation materials, and put them on paper to hand over to the chief director who then would combine and edit all the materials into reports. During the investigation, whenever the team leader collected materials, he ought to communicate with every team member about their gains and faults, in case of committing the similar errors in future.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1,Owning inadequate experience, teachers and students were not skillful in making web pages.---Often searched information in the internet, teamwork helped to solve problems. idea:As long as we joint hands together, nothing was impossible. This was our first time made website, and with no experience, under the help of the Town and Talent as well as the other schools, we were confident to finish the tasks. 2,The network was unstable--Preparing materials and making website were carried out at the same time, which would improve efficiency. idea:The internet in school was stable only in the afternoon time, so we made the best of this period and even the evening. It was tight, but we were happy because we gained a lot. 3,Tight time and lack of equipment, making website only could be carried on in school--Worked in cooperation with a due division of labor, called on the whole school to help prepare materials and worked in the weekends. Idea:Called on the whole school to help to borrow equipment. We experienced the happiness of success, our friendship was also strengthened. Moreover, the teachers also changed their ideas on us.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We cared nothing in the chilly and strong windy day and walked a long way, just in order to take to the farmers the technology information that we have downloaded, in hope of helping them to obtain wealth. Seeing their bright smiles, our feelings of tire and thirsty have gone right away. We were so honored and proud of our deeds. Besides, we talked with them, cared about their bitterness and put down their ideas which was very important because only had we did this should we know what they were longing for and desiring about. And more importantly, our aims of this practice were nothing but listening to the farmers' ideas, getting know their needs, doing as their expectation and improving our actions. Through this activity, we did have a deeper understanding about the rural present situation.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Social practice offers a big stage for each student willing to experience, demonstrate himself and achieve the value of life, and plenty of gains will be achieved if he try his best. To grow up through the practice might be what social practice really breeds. That is, only if one person went deep into the society and put himself into the practice should he find the shortcomings of himself, be well-prepared for the future into the real society and be devoted to the society to embody his own value. Moreover, it can help a student walk out of the campus, into the society, to practice and demonstrate, to get progress and cultivate wills, to often review himself and most importantly, to grow up.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Adobe Photoshop CS?Macromedia Fireworks 8 ACDSee 3.1 HA_SwfText1401beta0812_CZ Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 Microsoft Word 2003 Internet Explorer 7.0 Computer, Digital camera, Scanner, U disk

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

During the investigation, we got to know that what the flower growers desperately needed were the marketing channels and planting technology. The first issue was beyond of our competence to solve, but for the second one, we downloaded much related information and sent to them, they were so happy to take because plenty of the information was really beneficial. One example was that grandfather Xie Shengbang was deeply interested in the internet information, however, because of his lack of education, he felt so sorry that he was unable to study it.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Through this activity, we did have a deeper understanding about the rural present situation. Firstly, most of the farmers were illiterate, with little education and no specialty, worsely, they were reserved, little information and rashly, seeing no prospect of the things and surely finding difficulties in the prosperous way. Meanwhile, some farmers paid little interest and confidence on the new project and technology. Therefore, there often emerged losses because they could not look far away into the future but only the present, and conducted blind investment. Secondly, the farmers have been yearning for knowledge and receiving education. They entertained the aspiration that the government could offer them several trainings on the marketing economy, technology implementation, knowledge of law and the other to improve their comprehensive qualities. Finally, the farmers sincerely entertained the hope that the relevant departments offered them the most practical and concrete help, including enhancing the rural spiritual civilization cultivation. Because of various reasons, in the rural areas, there have arose undesirable social modes, for example, gathering gambling, going in for weddings and funerals in big way, blindly building houses and holding parties after one harvest of the plantings, which definitely cost them too much and even brought some farmers bankrupt. In this way, it was quite easy to imagine how hard of their long way to go.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The School administration office offered us a great deal of support including allocating teachers, financial assistance and equipment support. Without their help, our task would be much more difficult to finish. Intern student Ma Youfu offered so much help on the website building, especially the Flash making, Dream-weaver implementation and photo processing.

The director in charge of the northwest of China in the Town and Talent named teacher Li Zhihua and the website technology guiding teacher Lv Qing, it was our first time participated in the Net Fair contest, with no clear clues at the beginning; it was their patient guidance that helped to proceed the tasks.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)
