Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Ningxia , as one of the cradles of Chinese civilization , had our ancestors toiled and multiplied on this land as early as Pleolithic Age more than 30 thousand years ago. With a long history of ethnic hui , people left abundant cultural heritage , including Chentian Temple , Haibao Pagoda , Xixia Tombs in Yinchuan , 108 Pagoda , Zhongwei gao Temple , Sha po tou and Tongxin Mosque in Yinnan , Xumi shan Grotto in Yuanzhou , and Wudang Temple , Tianzhou ancient Pagoda and Yuhuang Pavillion in Yinbei. Ningxia hui Autonomous Region is both the transitional area between Central plain culture and prairie culture and the collisional and transitional area between central plain culture and northern normadic culture .Hui culture in this area integrating Yellow river civilization , western xia civilization and Islam culture can be seen everywhere, and the Hui traditional clothing is one of it. Inheriting the tradition of Islamic clothing and merging the characteristics of Han Chinese clothing culture, the Hui clothing is an important part of Hui culture.

2. Summary of Our Project

The Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region is the largest area inhabited by Hui people with a Hui population over two million thus is called the “Muslim province of China”. Hui people strictly adhere to Islamic rules and have unique religious practices, mental state and national consciousness. Inheriting the tradition of Islam and Arab dress, merging the Han Chinese clothing elements, and preserving the outstanding features of its own, the Hui clothing shows a variety of style. Hui men usually wear white or black Huis cap (a cap for hierurgy) and some also wrap their head with white towel or white cloth. As denomination and region vary, some Hui men wear horned Huis cap. Moreover, Hui men usually like to wear double-breasted white shirt which makes them spruce and dignified. The way Hui women dress originate from Arab countries, and affected by Islam, they are very particular about clothing. They usually wear converged cap and hijab which has three different type respectively for young girls, married women and old women. Young girls usually wear green one that has embedded gilt edge and with floral patterns embroidered; married women wear black one that merely reaches the shoulder; while older women wear white one that drops to the back. Both Hui men and Hui women like wearing blue sleeveless jacket, and Hui men who wear a white shirt and a blue waistcoat are more gentle and dignified especially.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.Students did not have enough access to computers . We had a relatively tight schedule of classes , as a consequence , students did not have enough time to play computers , letting alone the internet access . Since they did not have computers in their homes , they had limited chances to get familiar with computers . They knew computer operation more through guidance from teachers by narration. 2.Difficulties during the interview . Since our leading teacher was very busy at working at the working time , he could not leave enough time taking us to interview and investigate . therefore , we had to use limited weekends time and the National holiday to conduct the interviews. Our first interview was conducted in the Chinese Hui Cultural Park which is 50km away from our school, and it took us more than 2 hours to get there by car. On arrival, we found the ticket was 60 yuan per person, so merely Mr.Tan, Mr.Gong and Gong Xujing entered into the park in order to save money. As our visit came amid the National Day holiday, we saw a lot of tourists in the Chinese Hui Cultural Park, and we didn’t have the chance to make an interview with the park ranger. At last, we took some pictures of several attractions that were valuable to us. 3.Time is short. This web page competition time is only two months, although we at the beginning was brewing team, determine a theme, make plans, but, in the middle, and spicy middle school clashed, finally, in October, before we determine The Hui's Costumes 'theme. 4.There were no buses in this rural area and the road were not good enough for walking as well, which made our trip very inconvenient. 5. The interview process and experience.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

from so much first time we had really understood the purpose of the CyberFair. Through the web competition we deeply appreciated a reason that nothing in the world is difficult for one who dares to scale the heights and there is nothing one can’t imagine but can’t do.

Therefore, during the study process, in addition to the demonstration of the students’ study results in a form of website, we also hoped that they could learn to cooperate with each other and let them know Hui clothing is an important intangible cultural heritage of Ningxia then to protect it. In the hui's Costumes project website production process, we ask students to understand the importance of school-based curriculum, hope students know the hui nationality clothing in our high school of the significance of the development of school-based curriculum, and at the same time, students are required to dress and hui of information technology, art, history, language lesson organic unifies in together.
