Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Changhua County is located on the westside of Taiwan. It used to be the important traffic gate before Taichung City developed. It was originally named Poasoa, and later named Changhua as the meaning of Empery Manifestation in Ching Dynasty. Changhua City is the center of transportation and one of the best missionary places in Taiwan. There are temples and churches. Our community is on the block along Zhongcheng Road in Changhua City. Most of the residents are engaged in trade and industry.

2. Summary of Our Project

By the project, we intent to introduce A Skin-Graft With Love Foundation to people. It was founded on the dedicative spirit of the British couple-Mr. and Mrs. Landsborough. They are great to residents in Changhua. The best-known story is called A Skin-Graft With Love which is about Marjorie Landsborough’s (Mrs. Landsborough) kindness to a little boy. The Foundation offers a five-star service in the principle of love, caution, patience, effort, and consideration. Through the project, we visited the Landsborough’s Graft With Love Memorial Hall. We interviewed the Foundation staffs, volunteers and donators. We held lectures of hair donation and dementia. We also arranged activities, questionnaires and interviews to show our concern to people in need.Through practical action, we hope to help the Foundation achieve their dreams.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

There are three computer classrooms in our school. We have a total of 105 computers. These computers are for students to use. Each of the offices and the library have at least one computer. Even in the classroom, there is one computer, too. Each computer is connected with internet. During this project period, we use the internet on campus for group discussions and web site production, even when we were home.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

During the project, we faced some problems and found the solutions later. 1.Most of us are from different classes. We did not have enough time for discussion. To make the project proceed smoothly, we tried to make full use of our winter vacation, morning study period, and spare time after class to carry out the discussion and visits. We checked our work schedule and wrote reflections at home. 2.To do the project, we visited A Skin-Graft With Love Foundation often. For meal delivery, the long distance required motorcycles rather than bicycles. As minors, we asked our parents and teachers to ride us to the destinations. 3.In order to introduce A Skin-Graft With Love Foundation, we had interviews with CEO of the Foundation, cancer patients, Director of Students' Affair of Ping He Elementary School, an alumna, voluntary hair designer, and tour guides of the memorial hall. Each of the interviewees came from different background. To make interviews better, we held pre-interview and practiced with each other. 4.We did not know how to make web pages. So we asked teacher to plan the structure for us. We used image editors to edit photos and the situation comedy. Through these, we hope that everyone knows A Skin-Graft With Love Foundation and joins us to help others.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Since we took part in the competition, we have improved our computer skills through making the web site. We realized that caring is the strength to carry on the dedication after the project. Being a student, we can give love to the world by concerning about the elders in our community. We also hope that everyone understands A Skin-Graft With Love Foundation better and do the charity work together!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our project fit into The Grade 1-9 Curriculum as follow: 1. Language Arts: The language ability is the most important subject during the project. It applies to the interview questions, research report, and analytical diagrams. Every time we wrote the report, our writing skills improved. 2. Mathematics: When we were conducting statistic analysis for the survey, we had to count the number of subjects, calculated the percentage, and trained our ability to read the charts. Thus, our math ability was improved. 3. Social Studies: We have to understand the essential of the Foundation and find out how it contributes to our local community. Besides, we learn more about helping people makes us happier than ever. 4. Arts and Humanities: For web page editing, we learned computer skills, and web page layout and design. 5. Science and Technology: We searched information on the Internet and used various software for writing or web page editing; thus, we improved our IT skills. 6. Integrative Activities: During this project, we all kept positive interaction in cooperation and collaboration. The sense of accomplishment is our main motivation.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

1.Internet could be the most useful medium throughout our project. We exchanged information and our points of views on our facebook. 2.We used telephone/mobile phone to make a appointment with interviewees. 3.We used digital sound recorders, digital videos and digital cameras to record our interviews. 4.We used printers to print out our questionnaires and our interview outlines. Scanner is used to scan members’ drawings. 5.We used the following software: Windows XP, Dreamweaver, PhotoCap 5.0, Corel Videostudio 12, Neo-imaging, Office 2003, Internet Explorer 9, Windows Media Player 11, Xnview 1.98.2 and so on.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

During the project, we understood A Skin-Graft With Love Foundation in depth; we knew the service spirit, structure, and ministries of the foundation. We act as 'ambassadors' in this project as follow: 1.To A Skin-Graft With Love Foundation: we expect to become the seeds of love. We could be seeds of A Skin-Graft With Love Foundation by the project. We learned to help others starting from ourselves. We also learned to treat others with love, caution, patience, effort, and consideration. We shall put the five-star principle into practice in our daily life. We also expect to be the seed to give love to the society. By gathering our passion and energy for the Foundation, we believe the patients and clients will be well cared. We believe kindness is a seed in human beings. When the seed turns into a flower, people learn to respect and help each other to make the world better. 2.To the community: we expect to become the bridge of love. Through the project, we hope to be the bridge between the Foundation and the community. We introduced the Foundation to community and hoped people in our community be the volunteers for helping others. On the other hand, the residents in need can apply to the Foundation for services, including taking training programs, and having home service and dining service. 3.To the classmates in school: we expect to become the pioneers of love. We hope our classmates as well as their friends and relatives to join us for giving services and assistance to others like the volunteers do. Though we are elementary students, we can be contributive by promoting hair donation held by the Foundation; we can tell others about the activity and encourage people to donate their hair for cancer patients. Welcome to join us.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

A Skin-Graft With Love Foundation is a local unit of charity in Changhua, but few people know about it. Luckily, we had the chance to invite the Foundation for lectures and promotion in our school. We also made situation comedy for hair donation. We hope that people in the community have the opportunity to know the Foundation and help others. At the same time, we used Facebook to let people all over the world know the Foundation ministries.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Taking part in International Schools CyberFair competition is a special experience we’d never had before. We are grateful that we’ve got a lot of help and support from different people. The completion of the project attributes to many people in the community. 1.We appreciate the Foundation for their help. When we were in need of related photos and information, they gave them to us immediately. Furthermore, the Foundation routed us to deliver meals and lent us the wigs. CEO of the Foundation (Ms. Chan Li-Ju) also gave an educational lecture on dementia elders in our school. 2.We are thankful for our parents. Our parents spent time riding us to visit, interview and deliver meals. They also helped to prepare gifts. 3.There is age limitation of applying for the Facebook account. We asked teacher for creating a page on Facebook. We discussed and designed the pages and invited more people to join hair donation.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

After doing this project, we have found that it was not difficult for everyone to help others, even we can do it. Therefore, The Foundation’s workers all make their very best to assist people who need help. It is touching and inspiring very much. We all think we are lucky and should cherish the opportunity of helping people.
