Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

In the last years of the Ching dynasty, Wei-Wu-Ying barracks, located between Wu Kuai Cuo and Chi Lao Yeh Village (nowadays Kaohsiung city), was an important military site.

After the role of the barracks was dismounted, diverse proposals and plans were proposed for the development of Wei Wu Ying. Some of which were establishing a university or a community or parks.

Many people who advocated public welfare, such as Dr. Quei-Hai Tseng and Architect, You-Yi Lu, formed the “Council for Promoting Wei-Wu-Ying Metropolitan Park” in order to lobby for creating a park. After more than ten years effort, the direction of development towards a metropolitan park and arts center was settled. A green dream of years for the south finally came true.

2. Summary of Our Project

We eight little Wei-Wu soldiers all care and love the ecological environment. Therefore, after much discussion, we interviewed key members of the Council for Promoting Wei-Wu-Ying Metropolitan Park. We wanted to discover how they launched a green reform, and completed the “green dream” by means of a webpage. Then, we interviewed the former Kaohsiung County Head, Chiu-Hsing Yang to understand thoroughly how he promoted creating the park, and how he implemented the environmental philosophy of “zero waste” during his term of service.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Limited Time: The pressure from our class studies and the burden of homework in junior high school are great, so it was hard for us to do the project. As our available time varied, gathering together to have meetings was a difficult task. In order to work as a team and complete the project on time, we had to sacrifice after-school lessons sometime. We continued our lessons and made the webpage at the same time. We all did our utmost.

Insufficient Computer Skills: Everyone’s spare time and computer capabilities differ. Thus the process of gathering, integrating data and making the webpage was full of difficulties. The learning process is toilsome; but after our continuous discussion and modification, we finally made our themed webpage.

Insufficient Translation Ability: We hoped to join the international Cyberfair competition, but we found it was hard for us to translate our webpage into English. We spent a lot of time on words and grammar choice. We asked our English teacher’s help, too. It seems we cannot be lazy at English learning. Starting from the next English class, we cannot doze off ZZZZZ..!!

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We make more people to know about Wei-Wu-Ying Metropolitan Park.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Language and Arts: After each event and interview, we wrote down our work content and reflections, sorted study information, practiced interview skills and distributed questionnaires. Thus, our planning, conceiving, expressing, reading and writing abilities were enhanced.

Social Studies: Through the study, we cooperated as a team, did assigned work individually, and learned to coordinate. We further observed and documented our community environment. Eventually, we learned the dependences between people and the environment. We appreciate and care about everything, and would like to further our appreciation and concern into action

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

1.We made a proposal based on our questionnaire statistics and result charts. Then we submitted it to the government agencies for their reference.

2. We made efforts to set up a public bike rental station near the Wei Wu Ying Park

3. We worked hard on promotion. We let Wuhu Junior High School students and people in our community know Wei Wu Ying further.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

1. We interviewed social heavyweights such as the key members of “the Council for Promoting Wei Wu Ying Park,” Dr. Gooey Hay Tseng, Architect You Yi Lu, and former Kaohsiung County Head Chiu Hosing Yang. We acquired the precious first-hand information from them.

2. We sent a proposal based on our research outcome to the mayor’s mailbox and got a response.

3. We got the recognition and affirmation from the media. The United Daily News and its network had reported our project.

4. We practiced what we preached. In order to make ourselves an example to the others, we planned an environmental protection movement (mowing and picking up trash).

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

1.The fact that we are able to enjoy the more than 60 hectares green was resulted from many unselfish heroes’ efforts on revolution for years. In addition to feel grateful to them, we should cherish the green.

2.A Netherland architect who is concerned both eco-friendly and aesthetics designed the Wei Wu Ying Arts Center.

3.Compared with well developed cities in the world, the green area in Kaohsiung city is insufficient. It awaits our government’s and people’s efforts.

4.The viewers of our Facebook page are few.

5.We planned to interview the Eighth Regiment, the last military unit in Wu Ying barracks. Probably because the information is involved with military confidential, the promised interview was cancelled. We were not able to get military historical information and photos.
