Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taiwan Mirror Glass Enterprise is situated in the Changbin Industrial Zone of Lugang Township, Changhua County. It is leading Taiwan’s glass industry onto the international stage. Seeing the imbalance in the natural ecosystem and desolated interpersonal relationship under rapid industrial and commercial development, motivated by corporate social responsibility and his consciousness, General Manager Lin established the Taiwan Mirror Glass Education Foundation. The Foundation hopes to promote the recovery of Taiwan’s native flora and fauna, and also cares about the physical and mental development of our youths. It is hoped that the Foundation can fulfill the mission of “Leaders in the Forest, Forging a United Dream”

2. Summary of Our Project

“We cannot allow the white dolphins to become a mere hearsay or a story,” General Manager Lin of Taiwan Mirror Glass Enterprise said. We saw his determination in his graying hair, and his mind sparkled with innovative corporate ideas that knew no boundaries. His shoulder lifted the burden to repopulate and recover white dolphins, Taiwanese calling crab and butterflies. Let us tell you what “Taiwan Mirror Glass Education Foundation” did for Taiwan.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

(1)Difficult access due to altitude of research location: Taiwan Mirror Glass Enterprise Ltd. is located in Lukang, about 30 minutes away by car, but the Changfu Community and short-leaf pine forest are situated at an altitude of 1000 meters and roads were not easily accessible. Even so, the research team strove to complete their mission.(2)Inadequate computing resources in students’ homes: Only five students out of the entire research team have access to computers and the internet at home, therefore much of the research data could only be processed during break time on campus.(3)Communication issues with TMG Enterprise:TMG Enterprise is a large company, factory and park sites are directed by various personnel, we were obliged to designate a contact person.(4)Conserved species not available in the season:White dolphins, fiddler crabs and monarch butterflies were not available this season, and the research team had to rely on books, photographs and the internet to compensate for insufficient data.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

“Don`t let the white dolphins not be just hearsay or a legend,” this is what the driving force of TMG Foundation, Mr. Tsao-Shui Lin, says. We saw his perseverance in the white hairs on his head, if his mind is tirelessly occupied with creative business concept, his shoulders are weighted the responsibilities of protecting and preserving the white dolphin, Taiwanese fiddler crab, and monarch butterfly. The tale of Mr. Lin and “Taiwan Mirror Glass Foundation,” may sound foolish, but efforts must be made at saving Taiwan and saving Earth. Thousands of words equals not one of action, come! You are who we need!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

(1)The research project corresponds to the issue of “environmental education” in the Integrated Curriculum.(2)Team members learned how to produce project reports and to advocate the cause of environmental protection.(3)The research time clearly recognizes the need for “man and nature” to live in harmony.(4)Aside from the formal members of the research project, teachers, students, and volunteer parents have all participated and assisted in its completion.(5)The research project has opened our eyes to the inadequacies of governmental regulations on environmental protection.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

The students used digital camera to record their interview processes, and use notebook computers to compose PPT reports. Team members used messaging software to discuss project issues, and used email for communicating their experiences and accomplishments to their teacher.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

(1)We asked the audience in attendance at a County Government event to sign and petition for the protection of white dolphins.(2)Students, parents, and teachers together manufactured dolphin key rings out of paper clay for a charity sale. The proceeds were donated to the Matsu’s Fish Conservation Union (MFCU).(3)We conducted a personal interview with Mr. Lin, even though he usually has little time to spare.(4)Ms. Chen-yi Gan from Matsu’s Fish Conservation Union came to give us a talk at our school.(5)Advocating and promoting the River-mouth Wetlands Trust Warrant Action at our school.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

(1)Through participating in the research project, we have come to be acquainted with more environmental protection groups and figures, and we have invited or recommended the to give talks at schools along the shoreline.(2)We have elevated community consciousness in saving the white dolphin by holding a petition event.(3)We have raised ecological preservation consciousness in the residents of our community.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Aside from students and their instructor, student parents who volunteer at the school helped to make charity sales merchandize and helped with student transportation. We would also like to express our gratitude to Mr. Lin of TMG Foundation and the TMG Enterprise for providing information, visiting tours and guidance for the students, and consultations on all relevant issues and questions.
