Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our school is located in Qunke town of southwest corner of Hualong County. It is near the Yellow River and convenient transportation, pleasant climate. Our school is located here, where is a good place to learn. Most of the students of 29 villages, 72 agencies, Ya Shisu town, Ang Siduo town, Deng Henglong town and Li Jiaxia committee are studying here. There is a common status that the poor family asked the children to ‘become waiter’ for money. Many families had serious condition of love boy more than girl. If the family was poor and had two or more than two children to go to school, the patriarch would let the boy go to school rather than the girl. 'The girl must marry soon or later. If the girl marries, they will belong to others and waste money.' Faced with such rotten idea at the seriously poor area, in order to fight their own destiny, we don't want to marry prematurely or 'become waiter' would have tried to overcome poverty to go to school. Many patriarchs didn't want the children not to learn knowledge or didn't expect education can't bring vitality to hometown. But over the years, the status quo is that the boy want to study, also don't let them study. No matter how good the girl's score is, the results sometimes will not let her go to school. But the students ( especially the child ) to school is very bitter, and learning is very hard, but the results is so good. All the year round, regardless of wind or rain, they always adhere to the school every day, never late or leave early. See here the Yellow River's stubborn, it seems to speak of the studying spirit of children here.

2. Summary of Our Project

'On the way to school-the story of poor family students' this theme is based on local geography and the realities of school students. Our school is a boarding secondary school, due to dormitories little, bed shortages, many children to school work from dawn to night, and it is a notable feature here. At the same time the students here learning desire is very strong. The parents put the hope of changing hometown into the education and children. Our school comes out top in the front of Longhua country at the annual college entrance examination every year that is inseparable with the children's school spirit. They have hope, work hard, effort and strong. Their study enthusiasm touched the teachers in the school and moved kind people far from million miles away. We focus on the difficult course about children studying and observe in stages. We have tracked, observed and researched from their families, life, studying at school. With the passage of time, these impoverished students slowly grew up, their fate and life are undergoing different change. They also enter into different road of life because of different pursuits of life. In front of them have hope, hardships; happiness, or confused.

While the school easily accessible, but because of financial stress, coupled with the school's own economic condition of, although 2M broadband telecom changes in our school to 4M Unicom fibre, but speed is not ideal In addition,Although the school traffic is convenience, because of financial constraints, coupled with the school's own economic conditions, our school changed telecommunication 2M broadband to 4M Unicom fiber, but speed is not ideal. In addition, all the computers in the school room was given by project in 2004. Today they have been very old, sometimes opening OFFICE software is slow. The students participating in activity don’t have their own computer. In order to make activities go smoothly, we often complete related work at the extracurricular activity time or on Tuesday.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

When we decided to make this website, we did not understand anything at the beginning. In the process of making, Zhu Qingnian and Jin Xingxing teachers helped us make the Web page frame and they told us how to make a Web page frame. In the process of making the Webpage, Han Zhizhong, Ma Bin, Jin Xingxing teachers helped us select video and give advice. If we met some technical problems in the process of making, we would have to look for school teacher Han Zhizhong to solve the problem. He was always patiently and seriously help us to solve all the problems which we encountered.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

No pains no gains. Numerous fruits can be seen at autumn, successful joy always can be felt after paying. Our effort made this website have fruits. We saw a lot of real status during home visiting and communication days. The true experience which we underwent along the way let us understand more if they want to get rid of the poverty as poor student, we must insist on going to school. Meanwhile, I hope poor student must work hard, because the side of pain also has warm.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Through participating in this activity, we not only finished our webpage making, more important is that we were really moved in this activity, because of these feelings, those parents and those ignorant children. At the same time, we also learned a lot of computer knowledge, so that at the final stage of making we can successfully complete webpage game under the guidance of the teacher. In order to finish the task on time, we can’t occupy more learning time of students we decided to finish learning task at first , then went to computer room to finish the work of entering words at late second time. Thus, It greatly enhanced our interest in activities and learning.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We participated in thematic website for the first time, our team members is seven grade students. At the same time, fewer personnel participate in. At the beginning, most of the teachers and students didn’t know what we do. In order to let more people understand our active content of thematic website, we decided to introduce to the teachers and students in the whole school and villages with the form of campus broadcast. Through our campus broadcast, most of school are aware of the active content of our website. Going out to poor student family to interview, in order to let interviewee—poor students’ patriarchs actively coordinate with us. We always talk about related situation of cyberfair at the beginning and explain some the scholar project of Western stories. After such an excessive, they knew our purpose of coming and became vey happy to receive our interview.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We were paid attention by underprivileged students and parents during interviews and collecting information. Most of them believe that the content of website which we made can deeply reflect the local situation and require us to engage in some activities in the future from time to time. Let more people support our education, let more people do some thing which we could do for our education and our students. Through our advocacy, schools achievement which the school has already had, more highlighted obviously. At the same time as a school teacher, you should also do more publicity in this respect. There are a lot of teachers and students to join our team, but also for our publicity do the effort.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Selected this topic website theme' on the way to school—the stories of poor family students ', we began to collect materials. We went out to interview: parents are very happy for us to talk about their true stories about poverty and are very active for this activity. They gave us a very large support. The school leaders also supported our website activity. We communicated with them and discussed. They were willing to put the work in their hands to receive us and gave us great convenience. There are only six members in our group team, but in the production process we have got the help from a lot of people. When we decided to make this website, we did not understand anything at the beginning. In the process of making, Zhu Qingnian and Jin Xingxing teachers helped us make the Web page frame and they told us how to make a Web page frame. In the process of making the Webpage, Han Zhizhong, Ma Bin, Jin Xingxing teachers helped us select video and give advice. If we met some technical problems in the process of making, we would have to look for school teacher Han Zhizhong to solve the problem. He was always patiently and seriously help us to solve all the problems which we encountered. There were many teachers, director of the moral education and students, offering endless help for our special events. We finished on time with their help.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We have never participated in the special Website production activities. Through these days be closely associated, at last we cleared up interview materials. When we interviewed the parents, before they didn’t know the purpose of our coming, they didn’t coordinate. But after we told the purpose of coming, the parents seem very active and very excited. They were willing to talk about some stories of poor students. It let us deeply understand: no matter what should we do, we should have clearly target, as well as our ultimate goal of this website which makes students cherish today the chance to school. Let them erect permanent target from now on, prove it with our practical actions, and effort and fight towards the targets erected by our own. Through this special website activity, it was also a very good education for us.
