Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Datong Hui and Tu Autonomous County is located in the eastern part of Qinghai Province and lies on the Huangshui River. It is 33 kilometers away from provincial capital Xining with a total area of 3090 km2.It is situated in the Transition Belt between Loess Plateau and Qing-Tibet Plateau. Datong has long history, simple and honest folkway, outstanding people and brilliant culture background. There are about 23 nationalities living here, include Han, Tibetan, Hui, Tu and Monguor. The Datong region is also replete with natural scenic attractions. Every year on the 6th day of the 6th lunar month, the traditional singing festival attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors.

2. Summary of Our Project

This place, more and more people dig Cordyceps for its high price which become wealthy. Relying on this, there were many families purchasing of cars, marrying the daughter-in-law, development of aquaculture, even a few people moved into the city.To the forth or fifth lunar month, every household vehicle preparation of fresh to dig into mountains of Cordyceps. We have seen that Cordyceps has such a big power, therefore, take this as the theme of this Web page. In order to enrich campus life, active learning atmosphere, under the quite mature campus network condition,, we formed a 'running snail' team and selected 'Cordyceps sinensis' as the theme to participate Web competition, although we are young, low capacity, but participation in the first, focus on learning.

There is only one computer classroom in our school which contains less than 30 computers, a lot of computer are already obsolescence, about ten percent of normal use,and network speed is not fast. Our school is located in mountainous areas, participating students don't have a computer at home, not to mention the Internet.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1,The specific reasons:Plan Problem:Discuss topics, build frameworks, division of work...... How a rational division of labour on schedule to complete the task . Solution: After consultation of the panel discussion, we determined the topic category,and every student had the division of tasks. 2,The specific reasons:Information Problem:See network, online information is not complete,practicing, gathering,interviewing Solution:Make use of network resources, collect materials, field trip for practice. 3,The specific reasons:Experience Problem:Several members were novices, on how to compete, how to start we had no clues. Solution: We have got Cyberfair Excellence Award in 2010, 2011,and had experienced teacher guide us. 4,The specific reasons:Cooperation Problem:We came from two classes, students of different classes were not very familiar with each other, when discussing the problem, we were often embarrassed. Solution: Non-scheduled meeting convened to discuss together, you will be responsible for own work of acceptance and review, issues they encountered to accept other members’ views, learning from each other. 5,The specific reasons:Schedule Problem:Because of having classes at school, students and teachers' time is very limited,so project was progressing very slowly. Solution: We used the time at home to communicate with parents, neighbors, relatives and friends, finished responsible task and made time to contact the instructor to check. 6,The specific reasons:Technology Problem:We did't know what thematic website it is ? How to do? Solution: Under the guidance of the teacher,we surfed the works of cyberfair .

5. Our Project Sound Bite

In the process of competition, although very bitter and tired, but there were also a lot of pleasure.In the school, everybody's topic was webpage contents, on Sunday they went to collect all relevant information, to the mountains to dig Cordyceps, made Webpages on computer classroom at lunch break , even the holiday wass not willing to let off.Everyone with solidarity and cooperation all together, the pain and joyful parallel. No matter teachers or our students, all felt abundant and vast product resources in our hometown of varying degrees. Throughout the course of contest, schoolmates' practical ability obtained certain cultivation and enhancement.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

This special topic research activity specially conducted by the students in grade 6, offering a good chance for them to practice what they have learned from the books into the reality, to gain the knowledge and experience that books fail to, and to comprehensively improve both of their socialization capacity and ideological and ethical standards. It was a good thing that the students were so active outside concerning about the outside world. Therefore, through this activity, they had a deep understanding on the local insects and grass culture, which in returns, inspired their love for the hometown.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In the course of our research, we visited many local masses who have digged Cordyceps, and interviewed relevant personage in Cordyceps museum in Xining City. The achievement that we studied is shared with the whole school teachers and students. The most important thing is, we hope that more people know the economic value and nutritional value of Cordyceps and so on.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Through our researching results, school teachers and students understand the nutritional, economic value of Cordyceps.Our interview makes an excavation to the local special product, so as to achieve the effect of publicity. Our students take advantage of extra practice time everyday for doing interviews and the dissemination of knowledge, while consuming a lot of physical strength and energy, but let more people understand the growth of Cordyceps sinensis and its value.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Our raw material understood and obtained is mainly through visits, exchanges, and practical way. School support, students participate and help from the village.Our student has carried on propaganda in their own village, which attracting many people to come with admiration,and provided us with photos of they themselves digging Cordyceps as well as some interesting stories. Our team had got so many helps from teachers and villagers during the process of project. Webpage-making brought us into contact with new ideas. As members of team, engaged with activities, we thanked all the people who helped us. The project ate up all teachers ,students and villagers time. We showed our gratitude to them.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In the course of visits, we find that, it is really not easy to have a profound study of a project. In our daily life, we once contacted Cordyceps, knowing something about, but not in details. Now it is not until thoroughly study that we finally know a lot of knowledge we didn't know before, such as its medicinal value, nutritional value and gathering difficulty.
