Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Qian-De Temple is not only an important center of religious beliefs but also the spiritual shelter of most residents in Tianjhong. In recent years, Qian-De Temple has also taken part in the holy pilgrimage of Mazu Temples in Changhua County. Every time when an important festival comes, a number of believers will crowd into the temple. And the development of Tianjhong is closely related to Qian-De Temple. In order to know more about our hometown as well as to promote it, we attempt to design the website to introduce Qian-De Temple.

2. Summary of Our Project

Tianjhong is located in the southeastern area of Changhua County and famous for its rice cultivation. The name “Tianjhong” is originated from rice. This town is situated at the center of a paddy field. Since it was surrounded by green paddy field, it was first named after “Tien-Chung-Yang” (which means the center of a paddy field), and the name was changed to Tianjhong during the Japanese Occupation. Most residents in Tianjhong in the old days worked at farming, and farming is often influenced by the weather or climates, so the support of religion plays an important part in their daily lives. This is also the reason why there are so many temples in Taiwan.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:1

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

When our teacher proposed to participate in this competition, we were not quite confident of ourselves at first because we were not good at using computers. But our teacher encouraged us to have a trial, no matter what the result is, as long as we had fun and learnt something in the experience. Hence, we finally made up our mind to take the challenge at the beginning of December. Due to the limited time, we made use of the break time at noon to learn about webpage design and art design software, such as Namo WebEditor and Photocapx, to edit webpage and modify photos. In addition, since we were not so familiar with the local culture and history of our community, we also inquired the managers, staff, and volunteers of Qian-De Temple to assist us. Afterwards, the mayor of Tianjhong Town, Mr. Chun-Hsiung Cheng, knew we joined the competition; he even gave us a lot of supports and encouragement. Because of these, we are grateful to those who help us and get more united in our team.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Living in a community, we residents should learn about what happens here. This way, participating in this project can arouse students’ identifications to their homeland and increase their interactions with the community.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Being a residents in Tianjhong, we are supposed to know about the local information, such as characters and events. Taking a view of the development of Tianjhong, we can find that Qian-De Temple is very significant in Tianjhong. After we learning this, we found the history of Qian-De Temple is quite incomplete. Therefore, we expect to introduce Mazu in Tianjhong to everyone and promote Tianjhong as well. By the case, we learnt how to make a webpage, how to communicate, and how to integrate information. Via the contact with the local residents, we get closer to Qian-De Temple and moved by our homeland. So we expect more people can know about Qian-De Temple and refresh their memory of Tianjhong.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Interview(Visit residents to learn more about Qian-De Temple and Tianjhong.) Internet(Surf the Internet to find more information.) DC, recorder(Take pictures and record the data during the inverview) Scanner, printer(Use scanner to deal with images and use the printer to print data) Phone, cellphone(Phone the interviewees for connection) Flash disk(Store data and send to PC without Network) software Namo WebEditor?Photocap?Cuteftp?Office.......? Software is offered by our school. Among the software, what we learn most and most important is NamoWebEditor, which we never knew about before. It is a bit tough for us to learn it well.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Though there is a Facebook for Qian-De Temple now, it hasn’t yet had a formal webpage so far. Thus, our goal is to build up the webpage and make the work as the formal webpage for Qian-De Temple after the end of the competition. This way, it can not only help the residents in our community know more about Qian-De Temple but also make our community connected with the whole world on the Internet.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

After finishing the project, we expect more people through the Internet can know about Qian-De Temple as well as the culture of temples in Taiwan. We hope people all over the world can know about the spirit of Tianjhong. If the strangers hear about Qian-De Temple, we also hope they can pay a visit to Tianjhong to appreciate the distinguishing architectures.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We contacted the vice-director of Qian-De Temple and visited the temple with him. With his guide, we learnt a lot about the culture and history of this temple and get a lot of valuable information. In addition, when the mayor knew we have been working on the project, he also provided us support and enthusiastically encouraged us.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Via the project, we have more identification to our hometown and get more familiar with the architecture with long history. In the past, we only went to the temple for praying with family on festivals. But now we know more about this temple, and we believe we are closer to our community and this place.
