Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our Project is a compilation of local attractions across the our district and residential community. Wading River is located on the eastern north shore of Long Island, NY. We are in a suburban area on the edge of a rural community. While our district is located in this community, we are a Special Act school district which means that our students come from suburban and urban areas across Long Island and most students reside in the campus residential center. The students working on this project are part of our Life Skills class.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our Project is a compilation of local attractions across the our district and residential community. Wading River is located on the eastern north shore of Long Island, NY. There are various attractions both man-made and natural, ranging from sports, parks and unique sites.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Along with desktops in the classroom for research, we used Apple laptops to design the website. iPads and iPods were used to take photos.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Barriers we had to overcome were there was no Internet access in the Life Skills classroom, so we had to find an open classroom where the Internet worked. We have limited laptops so there was some difficulty in scheduling time to use them. Finding information on some of the attractions was limited or difficult to research. It took a substantial amount of time and patience to enter the information.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The experience of participating in the Cyberfair has shown that though we are a small school with limited resources, we can come together to learn to compete on an international level. It also help us develop better research skills, ability to work together, and find some interesting areas in our community.
