Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Radauti is a town in Suceava (historical region of Bucovina, Romania). It has a population of 27,759 inhabitants. Until 1950 it was the county of Radauti. The town is situated in Suceava county, to the north of it, at a distance of 38 km from the city Suceava. Town's geographical coordinates are 25 ° 54 'east longitude and 47 ° 51'north. Radauti has an area of 3230 hectares. It is the third largest town in the county, occupying 14% of it.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our project aims to clean the green areas of Radau?i and to make aware the town’s residents of the small number of bins in town. We have realized that our community lacks in environmental education, they throw away rubbish on streets, they don’t put it in special places and sometimes the bins don’t exist. So we have started a project which will notify the community about the lack of involvement in ecological activities. Environmental protection should become an important concern for Radauti’s residents. Just a few people are asking questions about environment. People asks questions only when something affects directly and decisive their daily lives. The main problem we face is related to local waste management, the most important part of process should be made by population and not by sanitation companies. Solving this problem requires a lot of time and involvement ,our role is to make young people realize the importance of a clean environment. In 2010, the total amount of waste generated in Radau?i was 22,500 tones. The project „Let’s do it, Romania!”, held in the entire country, has managed to gather many volunteers from our school . They have cleaned some areas, infested with garbage. The project, previously held in several countries has been very successful. The volunteers have collected hundreds of bags of garbage.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Our community was skeptical when we started the project, they said that just a group of people can't make any change to town, but in the end they realized that they were wrong, we managed to clean almost every area of Radauti in a short time. When we started the action 'Let's do it, Romania!' we faced a bad weather and it was really hard to succeed in our action, but after a while a brightly sun helped us to finish it. The mayor helped us too, he brought us garbage bags and water bottles. Behind our action ,our city take great benefits of more waste bins.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The project has helped us to learn working in a team, we've realized that if you want to make a change you can't make it alone, you need to get involved in a group of people and then start to make that change, we've learnt that communication is really good in such a job. Our community have appreciated our project and our involvement.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The major skill we have learn due to this project is the team work, but we also managed to learn how to convince the others to make something, in our case protecting the environment. Our first steps in this project were really hard, everyone had his own idea and wanted to apply it, but we succeeded making a good team work in the end.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We have used normal PCs for this project, but the most important way of information was our local library .We interviewed some of our teachers, some teachers were really nice and they helped us a lot.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We didn't need to be 'ambassadors' very much, all we had to do was to talk with the local authorities, at one point we even talked with the mayor of our town about the wrong location of the waste bins. This task wasn't very hard to done, mostly because people were impressed by our action and were very nice to us.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We strongly believe that our project had and still has an important impact in the thinking of our community. We received a very good feedback, when we finished the project we received a quite big space in second page of our local newspaper, they said that that kind of actions should be made more often.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Those who had helped us most were our teachers, they helped us to finish the project, they resolved some of technical issues with our site, they put us in contact with local authorities and they even participate in our actions of cleaning the town. At the actions of cleaning participated more than us, we were surprised when we saw that almost 250 of students got involved in this activity. We want to thank them through this site for their involvement.
