Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Located in the western end of the Hosi Corridor and in the upper reaches of the Shiyang River,Huangyangchuan,with the Qilian Mountain Nature Reserve to the east and the Tengger desert to the north,is dry with an annual precipitation less than 500 mm,and the environment here is fragile. We grew up drinking water Huangyangchuan River,and Huang Chuan Town we live in is with a population of over thirty thousand.Our contributions with our concerted action to our homes have made the river clearer and the grass stronger.We believe,under our driving force,that more and more villeagers will participate in the anti-pollution activities to make our homes more beautiful.

2. Summary of Our Project

In order to keep favorable environment, we carried out a research into the contamination status and the pollutional changing situation of the Huangyangchuan River,hoping we can do bit for the development and environment of our homes.

In addition to a multimedia projector classroom,our school has two computer classrooms and a dedicated electronic preparation room,respectively fitted with 120 and 8 computers.The Internet and the Satellite Information Network of Education are available for the four.And the electronic preparation room was with access all day for us.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We did have some difficulties.But for our counselor who provided many opportunities for experience reference while explaining,we couldn't have known where to start in the beginning.The material gathering was another difficulty.When we covered the villagers about the Huangyangchuan River,once beautiful with honorable history yet dry today,some were zealous while some were not,amd this almost drove us to tears.However,we smiled through tears when thinking back,for what we did was significant.We were students and study was our top priority,so we shall do more than others. Time was very limited for our project.We must have a reasonable allocation of time from Septemper to November.When it came to some special interviews that must be made at the weekend or during the noon break,some of our parents dissented before they finally understood our project was signigicant and wouldn't affect our study.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Fortunately, we were a bit hard,but we gained a lot.At the beginning we hadn't realized the importance to protect the Huangyangchuan Rive fundamentally,and we knew the importance of environmental protection till the accomplishment.In order to find out the realer first-handed information about the contamination status of the river,we rode along the river for investigation which had strengthened our understanding towards the river.And on our visits we would meet our classmates who would help us as well by showing us something they thought helpful for our understanding.While providing us activity space,our school also suggested us to save on water and to protect the environment.So we were not fightig a long battle.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

It is obvious to all that the depravation of climatope is to a serious extent.And in the schoolbook various suggestions that we shall protect the environment are raised,aimed at reminding us to show solicitude for our living environment in reality.Our theme was closely related to people's real life.With the support and encouragement of our Chinese and geography teachers,we showed the pictures we gathered in our class and even the school environment lecture,in order to cause more teachers'?students' and parents' concern.The purpose of application played a promotional effect,which was more conductive to enhancing the environmental protection awareness.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Our intention through the activity was to tell all that environment is closely linked with each of us.And we,with our effort,hoped more people could play a role as environmental actor.We had taken a lot of pictures about the contamination status of the river to let more people know the pollution hazards,and by contrust we want more people to learn about the changes of the Huangyangchuan River and causes.And we hoped through the interviews with the villagers living on both sides of the river,that people can pay more attention to it.As environmental publicity messengers,we have a responsibility to let more people know the contamination status of the river that they can participate in the protection of their mother river.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our theme was about environment.We hoped our investigation could cause more people's concern and they,then,could participate in the environmental protection consciously.We,as environmental publicity messengers,in order to make the activity more in-depth,had gotten the support from our school,for each class conducted a speech contest taking 'Protection of the environment is everyone's responsibility' as the theme.The School Youth League raised part of the funds for the community outreach and sent a group of students of environmental protection for publicity,which set off a great wave.Some parents,once making little of our action,became our protector and propagandists.And what particularly impressed us was the leaders of the Da'nan Country,who,with local villagers,quarantined and reinforced the well for people and livestock;cleaned up the garbage around;and brew a high protective effect desk with cement for it,aimed at preventing its water from pollution.The elderly of the village committe,Huangyangchuan Town,organized a garbage clean-up activity taking 'Garbage-Get Out of the Way' as the theme and sent more than two hundred people for the clean-up of the neighborhood road and for the regular trearment of the garbage in the river bed to reduce the pollution.Meanwhile,they developed a long-term environmental health program to clean up the surrounding environment termly,forming a long-term mechanism.Moreover,the government of Huangyangchuan Town launched more than thirty-seven thousand people who had planted one hundred and eighty thousand flood control seedlings in the north and south beds of the Huangyangchuan River for the autumn river bed improvement.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

After many people had sensed our field work,they all lent us a hand.Our goals,namely the thirteen village clerks,all provided us with the telephone number of their subordinates who would come to help us when needed.And they,especially when we raised some corrections,would work on them with enthusiasm as well as rectify and improve them where appropriate.The vice chief of Huangyangchuan Town provided us vehicles on the way to the heart of Maomao Mount which lies in the source of Huangyangchuan River.On hearing our action,Mr.Wu-the Shangjiagou Country clerk,convened the whole town for the learning of the promotional material we offered so that more people understood the significance of environmental protection.In addition to editting a over thirty minutes environment feature film for us,the information department of the Huangyangchuan International Conference Center also aided us with its publicizing.An old man-the former head of the Xidatan Village Neighborhood Committee over sixtry years of age,despite his bodily ailments,still offered us a one-day guidance to the source of Maomao Mout,tenaciously,and introduced us its situations.At the close of the day,he,with dust and mud all over his body and persistent coughs though,still invited us home for dinner and accompanied us till we left.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We obtained some novel findings in the process that the town-once with dust swirling in sunny days and liquid dung flowing over in rainy days,disappeared,accompanying a lot of leisurely people picking up litter around along the town road where a refuse box that can contain 10 cubic meters litter can be found every 100 meters,while in the past none could be found along the seven kilometers east-west and three kilometers south-north road.Our project had drawn to a close and we had won recognition and appreciation of the Huangyangchuan Town and the surrounding towns.Mr.Zhu-the master of Gulang Town,asked us to do such a project for his towm.He said: 'The project not only has well educated over fouty thousand people in Huangyangchuan Town to protect our living environment,but also is a good lesson to our younger generation that environmental protection shall start from ourselves and be passed down from generation to generation......'
