Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Shangyi which lies in the north area of North China and in the southern tip of Mongolian Plateau,is with a vast territory and profuse land resources. With a total area of 2,632.47 square kilometers,of which 1,162,200 mu of arable land-with rich soil types,Shangyi is a good place for farming?animal husbandry and forestry. Climate here is unique-four distinct seasons?ample sunshine?a larger temperature difference between day and night with hot rainy season. Natural landscapes, with varied features of north and south, are divided into two by the margin of the dam, below which the dense forests stand and deep ravines lurk and upon which the sky bright and clear and the breeze soft and fresh with simple and kind human feelings.Combining the cultivation culture with nomadic culture,Shangyi waves with a unique local flavor.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our project theme is about one of our local specialities-the green oil-bearing crop, aimed at bettering its development to let more people know the traditional cash crop-the til,and to make the industry more dynamic.By introducing and publicizing the planting?process and edibleness of this green plant,we hoped people could pay more attention to its protection so that it could give play to zouthe greatest advantage for openings.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:none

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Three servers and seventy clients available,1M ADSL access,Windows operation system. Our school became dial-up network user in 2007,and now there are three classrooms with the Internet available after several years of development. We elected three writing and computer lovers as the competitors.Under the guidance of the teacher and with the information technology knowledge they had acquired, they got involved in the competition.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

It was our second time to participate in the Global School Web Fair since 2010.We cherished this rare opportunity very much, however,we met a sea of troubles.First,we missed opportunity to take pictures of the til in its summer vegetation period and autumnal harvest time.Second, today's pupils, lacking of field observation and working, knew little about the til, though they had heard about it.Third, lacking of skilled camera technique,we were not able to take some novel and special pictures. We had acquired much material through our schoolmates' effort, who,at our volunteers' suggestion, came to the fields for visual experience?consulted the peasants and made interviews and investigations in the siritch mill. We,experienced as we were, had overcome many difficulties borrowing good ideas from the online works based on mutual complementarity. In a word, difficulties were through while suprises and hopefulness came.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

They say that no pains,no gains. It was the Town and Talent Technologies that made our accomplishment able to be shown fully. We were bittersweet as competitors in such a significant event. To our delight,we had mastered some web page making techniques, which, not consummate though, brought us joy and wisdom of team work. What worried us was our shortage of professional quality, which made us not able to unearth novel and fresh content.Nothing is more important than participation, and we were convinced that we would get what we earned, and difficulities would be always overcame with our persistence.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The school-made course-'Recognition of Hometown Crops' had been promoted, and various agricultural experimental base were newly and particularly set for stuents' practice. This time we made a web page about til for all the students to appreciate through the multimedia facilities, which was good for the course to be put in practice. When both measures were carried out, illuminating each other, they had not only trained the students in their love for their homes since childhood.but also enabled them to experience the charm of the speciality home, and futher more to experience the benefits brought by the information technology.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

The information tools include the computer?DC?recorder?scanner?SD card?card reader and tally book.

Software:Photoship for photo process?Microsfot Word for word edition?Microsoft Excel Internet Explorer for web page scan?ACDSee for photo scan and edition and Ftp for data transmission.

Web site&Network:MSN for communication?E-mail?forum?FTP Server and ADSL broadband.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

People say that 'Long, Long had been my road and far, far was the journey; I would go up and down to seek my heart's desire'.Similarly,we deeply knew the world on our backs in such an important contest. We believed numerous students who loved their homes would treat it a grear honor to made the web page of the green oil-bearing crop known by people all over the world through the Internet. And only with spirits of not being afraid of difficulties and moving forward can the project be faultlessly done. Therefore,we were always smiling even when doing every little thing, and to those who had helped us,we enlightened them with reason and moved them to action with compassion.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our interviews and gathering had been greatly supported by the natives.First, our project arouse great attention among the natives who believed it was innovative and would help make the most of the industry if carried out successfully.Second,we were convinced the web page about the siritch shall lead to ultra-high clicks so that more people shall know it,and this was also our intention.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We wished to pay high tribute to all those that had been concerned about and had supported us.We had paid visits to the fields and to the siritch mill as well as made interviews with some old peasants and some workmen in the mill, all of who lent us a helping hand actively. We were in sincere appreciation to them.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Through the project we had known the til was one of the natives' ways to get rich, and we were prooud of their hard work on it.Meanwhile,we had experienced the richer payback stemming from less hardwork and had enjoyed an unprecedented sense of joy of helping others. We did have finished the web page making, however,as we lacked of experience, contents and images hadn't been nicely screened and lacked of some unique insight and new ideas. And it was these black mark that we reflected on and summed up that enabled us to draw lesson from.In the interviews,we,going into the fields and being by the peasants for the firt time, deeply felt the natives' honest and warm. They not only told us the processing method and nutrient value of the til,but also hoped we could make comprehensive and careful propaganda for it to let more people sense their effort.Motivated and encouraged by this,we set our mind to do well in the project and to learn the network technology well so that we could show all our specialities and folk customs for accumulated wisdom and power.
