Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

A young, vibrant community, passionate about the arts and keeping traditions alive by incorporating the contemporary.

2. Summary of Our Project

This project aims to highlight Singapore’s diverse multicultural arts scene, with insights into four main arts disciplines – visual arts, theatre, music and dance. Events, groups and venues are talked about, along with the ways in which Singapore’s youths are getting more involved in the arts, and how the arts have contributed to Singapore’s unique culture.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:none

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:1

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Many of us were unable to meet up to discuss the project as we had clashing schedules. Thus, we had to use our time during co-curricular activity (CCA) sessions in order to discuss and build up the work. Several of the participating students had also never taken part in previous Cyberfairs before. We were also working on a tight time schedule, with only three weeks to complete the project.

However, we were able to use the internet at home in order to work on the project as well, and we assigned some students to take photographs during the weekend for some events. The seniors also guided those who were new to Cyberfair and encouraged them. Eventually, due to the combined efforts of the teacher and the students, we were able to finish everything on time.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We have learnt more about Singapore’s arts scene and hope to contribute towards it.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Many of us practised effective communication with one another through the use of e-mail and text messaging. Despite clashing schedules and being unable to meet up often to discuss and work on the project together, whenever we could, information was relayed quickly and efficiently.

The school also teaches us that there is “a leader in every student”. Through this, we have had students who took the initiative to take photographs for events and came up with more ideas and did more than expected to contribute to the website.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Desktop computers Laptops Smartphones Cameras Written surveys

We used computers to gather information online. Smartphones were used to contact each other and also to research on the go, as well as to take photographs. Cameras were used to take photographs of the event “Noise Singapore”. Surveys were given to friends involved in the arts to do and to allow us to gain insights on what youths in Singapore feel about art.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

When giving out the surveys, our friends asked us what why we were doing so and the purpose of these surveys and the information gathered. After telling them about Cyberfair and our goals, many of them became interested and hoped to see the final project. They were also very eager and willing to help us out, and were happy to have contributed.

While collecting the photographs for the page on local arts venues, aside from using the photos we could find under the free use licenses, we also contacted Sinema.SG to ask for permission to use their photographs, and told them about the significance of the project. They were also interested in it, and hoped to see the final project as well.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Many friends not involved in the project – even those whom we did not ask about the surveys – were interested in the website. After viewing the webpage, they gave us constructive criticism on how to improve the website. We hope that through this project, we will be able to shed light on the arts scene in Singapore, and encourage more people to get involved.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Our helpers included our family and friends, both in school and out of school. Other than offering encouragement and advice, more tech-savvy ones also taught us a little about web design, where to find good web hosts, offered constructive criticism on the information gathered and also contributed to the information.
