Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Alaska has a small population although it is the largest state in the Union. There are less than 700,000 people and even though we live over such a vast area, we are one community in our love of our beautiful state.

2. Summary of Our Project

We want to share our concerns for the care of our state and some of the organizations and people who are working to keep it in such beautiful and natural state.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The internet has given students the opportunity to not only communicate over vast remote areas but to access information both locally and globally. The biggest problems these tech-savvy students encountered was combining their work into one website.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Reaching beyond our remote state to the global community has meant a lot to the students. Sometimes we feel a little isolated up here.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

This project touches on both Language Arts and Social Studies standards. The result was the opportunity to improve writing skills, research skills, and technical skills.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Since our school district uses Mac computers and software, we learned how to use iWeb and polished our skills with Pages and Word.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Contact was made with different organizations that relate to our subject. This was made to ask for permission to use photos, making them aware that young people are concerned about these issues.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

This class and its participation in CyberFair will inspire future students to participate in the future and to delve deeply into subjects with passion.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Beyond contacts that were made by the students, making people aware of student interests. the students worked independently.
