Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The Shiaying area is located at Chianan Plain , which is formed by the silting of river beds that became a lagoon. Therefore the soil condition is rich, and is a very important farming area. Besides the traditional rice, characteristical agriculture of silkworm breeding and edible tree fungus have also been developed. But due to the import of Mainland Chinese merchandise they have declined. For now, the development of agriculture and animal husbandry industry of Shiaying Area show a trend in diversity. Farmers Association besides aggressively promoting Black Bean Soy Sauce, silk, goose meat etc. characteristical industries, mushrooms, water chestnut, dairy, fish pond aquaculture etc. industries also have good productions.

2. Summary of Our Project

Mr. Chu Hsien-Chin, known as Papa Chu, is the owner of Hsien-Chin Glasses, and is at the same the long-term volunteer of Lifeline, CEO of Haicicuo Camp Literature and History Workshop, and is also the leader of the volunteer group of Shiaying Elementary School. He spares no efforts in local culture and educational affairs. Papa Chu suffered from Poliomyelitis since he was one years old, and under the assistance of the former First Lady Madame Chiang, went to Taipei for medical treatment. Even though the illness has not worsened, but his leg was crippled from then. But Papa Chu has not struck down, and holds gratitude for his good luck. When he grew up, he became a person who gives his blessings to others. He cared for the young students in their township, spread out their local culture. Maybe the experience of Papa Chu is not as great as some famous people on television shows, but he is beside us, and have always practiced voluntary work. He is a model that is near us, and one we can learn from. This project research is will be progressed by interviewing Papa Chu in near distance. Besides understanding how he progresses in adverse conditions, and how turns his gratitude to a greater love; what is most important, is that we hope to build the concept of feedback, benefit, and great love from understanding the experience of Papa Chu.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1)Personnel Gathering and Time Arrangement:The school courses have a stable time schedule, and there are no empty time sessions to use. After school, everybody has their own day care classes to take. It is hard to gather everybody. Therefore we can only use lunch breaks and holidays to gather and discuss the structure of the topic, outline of the interview, and to carry out the interview. 2) Unfamiliarity of the Topic :Even though Papa Chu is the leader of the volunteer group of our school, and runs a glasses store on the street, and is a local figure that everybody knows. But when our teacher asked us what we actually know of Papa Chu , we can not utter out 10 sentences. However, our teacher comforted us that the meaning of research is to discover what he don't understand. And through the studying of information we gathered and the actual interview, we can gradually make out a story. 3)Interview techniques need more training:The topic of this research is a local figure, therefore giving a interview in person is a very important experience. Many information has to be obtained through the interview. But to tell the truth, we have no experiences on interview, and do not know what questions should be asked. Focusing on this difficulty, our teacher let us watch a film of a interview conducted by a television host. We discussed the technique and demeanor that needs to be paid attention to during the interview, then we carried out a simulation of the interview. After repeated practicing, when in formal interview, everybody can ask questions orderly, and record quickly as we conduct the interview.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Siaying Elementary School have in various times cooperated with the Cyberfair to conduct on project research. Every topic is the culture or local industries. This project is to introduce a local long-term volunteer. Even though he is not a very important person, but his vow and spirit for the local and students is a model that can be spread out. This can make students to more concretely know, and through the near distance interview, actually understand the concept of social service and character and behavior. The content of this topic not only helps everybody to understand the local culture and affairs, but also can be the reference data of character and life education.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The Nine-Year Integrated Curriculum emphasizes creative and active teaching, and uses diversified evaluation methods to inspire the multivariance of the wisdom of the students, and let students of different potential to develop their strengths, and truly reach the goal of ?suitability development?. The project research of this project, brings the students together to go out for on-site survey and interview, breaking the tradition of learning only in the classroom. This also cultivates the ability of solving problems in our actual life. The result should be plentiful! What we truly want is ?knowledge that can brought, and not a school pack that cannot be carried?! The attending of this research project, not only lets teachers to improve their professional knowledge, but also to develop their strength to guide their students;Children also learn that they have to discuss and negotiate repeatedly to complete this task, and understand the importance of teamwork. This also lets students to transfer from learning passively to aggressively construct knowledge by their own, and fully trying out and cultivating interests and ability.

The project research of the cyberspace is a deep search, and different from the general introductions. In order to let the local literature and history to be more abundant, we plan to combine the CyberFair, and import thematic community on-site survey, and make the results into a project website, to let everybody browse. This research is the first puzzle of out community investigation plan. In the long-term, after a few years, a complete community website database can be constructed.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our school has continuously conducted local education for 10 to 20 years. The content leans more to industry, religion etc. introduction. Besides the systematic learning and organizational results that the community is familiar with, we also have spread out volunteer service and literature and history maintaining concept. It is hoped that by this practice, besides letting students to have a deeper concept regarding projects, it is also hoped that more and more personnel can therefore invoke their concept and behavior of loving their hometown.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

For this monographic study, I would like to thank many people for their assistance. First, I would like to thank Mr. Zhu Xianjin for his leading role in receiving visits, providing valuable photos, and also taking us to the Xia-Ying monuments and interpreting their history. Furthermore, we are particularly grateful to the current leader of the volunteer corp of Xia-Ying Elementary School, Miss Huang Bihua, and the volunteer business contact – Director Gao Mei Ling, who both provided a lot of information on the current operation of volunteer corps. As they have also received our visit, we have been able to get to know Mr. Zhu Xianjin from other sides.

As long as we don't see them as a chore, and do our work in a happy and serious manner, we can also be a good volunteer of our school.
