Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our community is a small town sitting tranquilly at the southeast corner of Tainan County. We have no hustle and bustle of streets or luxurious lights decorating the town; what we own is a range of beautiful woods with abundant cultural atmosphere. In addition to the ancient buildings on the historical streets to witness the trial of history, there is also precious treasure hard to spot in other places—the Literature Museum and Ou Wei Movie Museum, which centralized the life of the movie king-Ou Wei, simultaneously exhibiting the movie developmental history in Taiwan. Through these, the process of its ancestors’ striving is well-presented and the efforts the offspring made to keep these beautiful stories can also be seen. The movie king known to people in Taiwan spent his lifetime dedicating to movies; he emulated the movements, expressions of the roles with serious and modest attitude, little by little. His life is learning worthy for the youth. His accomplishment is the proud of people in Sin Hwa Town. Please visit the movie king’s hometown with us.

2. Summary of Our Project

The birth of a local movie museum led us to travel through a time tunnel, guiding us to know this important actor in Taiwan movie history. A country boy with persistence and slight pride began with self recommendation letters, one by one, relying on his fortitude to arrive at his “journey of dream.” He enriched the honorable page in Taiwan movie history. The way to success was arduous and tough, but it was colorful as well. What we want to present was the movie king’s pursuing process to be a movie star. Ou Wei, whose real name was Huang Huang Ji, was born and grew up in Sin Hwa Town. He had nothing different with the others as a child—he also cried, played cute….. Because he worked as a policeman initially, he could enjoy the warfare to watch free movies in the theater. Then he embarked on his acting career through mimicking James Dean’s acting skills, and his steel will power enabled him to make lots of good works. For his dying young, we all feel sorry and regretful.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

For the team: At school, we use the computer classroom on the fourth floor, with Window 2000 working system, connecting to Taiwan Academic Net through T1 Line.

For individual: Each member has a PC at home, with ADSL, which facilitates our efficiency so more items can be accomplished within a short time. The teachers use the computers and potable Notebooks provided by Academic Affair Office.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.Ambiguity: Initially, the teachers gave us lots of information, but due to the magnitude, we didn’t know how to seize the key points. Then, we decided to collaborate with members and found out contents related to each subject, trying to organize them.

2.Time arrangement: It was more convenient for everyone to find mutual time for discussion during winter vacation. After school started, we became busier—some went to cram school after class so we had little time left for mutual discussion. Therefore, we decided to use our lunch break and allocated the tasks to finish at home.

3. The timidity during interview: It was inevitable to feel nervous and uneasy in the first interview. Not knowing what to ask, temporary silence happened after the interviewees’ answers. In this embarrassing situation, the teachers were always the ones to break the ice. But after one or two experiences, the following interviews got smoother and questions emerged from our mind, and gradually we finished the task, finding more scoops.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Through the website building and interview, we could directly understand the movie star without having to refer to the second-hand information, and most important of all, we learned knowledge we couldn’t find in the textbooks. We made great progress, not only between interpersonal interaction, information organizing but also computer skills.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Goals: 1. For the language field: Through making the Web Pages, we learn how to organize piles of materials, digesting all and then categorize into the outlines. We are not just copying and pasting but trying to paraphrasing these into an easier understanding description in our own words. Word choosing also makes the contents closer to the readers and more interesting. 2.For the social field: To obtain the information which couldn’t be found in written data, we visit Ou Wei’s family and fans, interacting as well as connecting with more people and know more about this strong-willed actor. While reading the information, we got a clearer picture of the relationship between Taiwan’s movie development and ages, which is like taking a modern Taiwan history class. 3.For the team work: Whether we are able to collaborate appropriately or not was the key to finish the website successfully. If the efforts just came single-sided, we couldn’t finish the task. During the process, we learn to consider, respect, and tolerate each other as well as help those who couldn’t spare the time, teaching those who couldn’t understand, and thus strengthen our relationship. Principle: Under the principles of Nine Year Compulsory Educational System, what we learn should not be confined to textbook knowledge. However, to enter a better school, what we usually learn is mostly from the textbook. Gradually, some local related events in this land are being forgotten. This time, we further discuss the movie king, Ou Wei, who may be forgotten by people. But by means of Internet and all local cultural information, we interview his family, fans, and the founder of the museum. Little by little, we know that this place once had such a great man. While making the Web Pages, we do not memorize the knowledge like studying textbooks. Instead, we were doing it with excitement in mind to explore.

1. DV ( source: school; function: filming) 2. phone, cell phone ( source: team members; function: communicating and discussing) 3. computer ( source: school team members; function: data input and Internet surfing web page building) 4. disk ( source: school team members; function: data storage) 5. flash drive ( source: teachers; function: data storage) 6. recorder ( source: school; function: meeting and interview recording) 7. scanner ( source: school; function: photo scanning) 8. digital camera ( source: school and team members; function: photo taking) 9. traditional camera ( source: school and team members; function: photo taking) 10. references books ( source: school; function: reference providing on computer software and web page design) 11. Software: Word, PhotoImpact, PhotoShop, Cute FTP, Flash, Dreamweaver Mx, ACDSee 3.0, FrontPage 12. Computer Systems: Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows 2000

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

First we try to find people’s feelings and impression toward Ou Wei, and consequently we understand more about him, during which our team interviews some enthusiastic people who know him well so that we are able to reveal the past movie king to the public and further, all the diligent people in this land. To obtain more information about the movie king, we visit his family and fans personally. Before that, the teachers would obtain their permission and confirm the time via phones. During the interview, we also require the interviewees’ approval in advance before voice recording, lest any detail should be missed. His family is also glad to know that Ou Wei is the topic of our monographic study, and through this project, the actor of strong would be known to more people.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our feature stories present a special people in the community. His efforts bring a good example for young people. This report re-arouse people’s love of the film. It let the movie cultural museum become a good place for recreation.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The website contains several titles, among which are Ou Wei’s chronology and biography. These resources come from several places: the Internet, the movie museum, old paper clips and also the first-hand information from the interview. If any information from the Net is referred to, we state its origins clearly; during interview and photo taking, we receive the interviewees’ permission in advance.

Mr. Kong Wen Rong(The founder of the museum)-- 1. accepting the interview 2. providing pictures and information related 3. arrange to visit the movie museum and interviewees Ou Wei’s family (Ms. Huang Yang Bei and Ms. Chwang Yang Lee)-- 1. accepting the interview 2. providing the materials Mr. Wang Rong Shen and Mrs. Wang(volunteers of the museum) 1. accepting the interview 2. providing the information related

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Interviewing is inevitable in this project. Under the condition that there is no interviewing draft, it is no surprising that we would feel nervous and helpless, but the situation teaches us the importance of preparing one for it. After that, we make one in advance and then the embarrassment doesn’t happen again. Plus, after a further understanding of Ou Wei, we feel so surprised that in our hometown once lived such a great figure, with respectable spirit.
